Rie Fu has a unique sound. I love how Gundam Seed Destiny would alternate between the English and Japanese versions of her song. Is it just me or does she have an odd (almost southern drawl) accent in the Bleach and Gundam songs? I'm bad at detecting accents in English singers and even worse when it comes to detecting accents in people speaking Japanese.

That's really cool. Though I thought it was only a matter of time, honestly the other day I was wondering if Rie fu or Angela Aki would try to breach out in the American Audience considering their song styles, and being fluent in English.
I'm gonna get both (even though I don't care for HalCali much)

I think Rie Fu could do quite well in America; the first time I heard her, I thought she was actually an American. Her English is near perfect, and I think her songs are a lot more enjoyable to listen to than Utada Hikaru. As long as she doesn't screw up by trying to do something drastically new instead of sticking to what she's good at, I can see her being successful.

@ Randall Miyashiro: I hear sort of a drawl in Rie's English as well. Strange for a Japanese vocalist (at least, I've never heard it before), but it actually works well with her style of music :p

I like this direction, even though I'm not a fan of either artist. Hopefully they don't bomb and keep their expectations in check, and maybe some other artists can attempt a jump in the future.

I really think SNoW (vocalist of the Jigoku Shoujo opening songs) could have a realistic shot at success here; I swear the english B-sides on her singles are better than 90% of the pop music on radio here already, and her english pronounciation and lyrics are pretty damn good too. Verbal could also make a big impact in the hands of the right people.

As for Rie Fu, luuuuuuuuuv her voice. Let's just hope she will stick to what she does best in Japan, then she'll be ok. She won't be your next Britney or Beyonce, but at least she wont do as bad as Utada. With proper marketing, she can at least have a hit single with popular TV shows and such.

But qualifying as the next Norah Jones is still plenty respectable in its own right. Wink

If not more respectable.

Rie Fu has a lot of pluses going for her where she could definitely gain a following, but I don't expect it to be anywhere close to mainstream, not that not being mainstream is a failure. Caroline has a little following on a small, respectable indie label, and got an American release before her sister Olivia, who's doing NANA songs...not that I'm sure Caroline had a Japanese release or anything...

If people want to listen to Rie Fu, they will. I wish her the best of luck, but I'm undetermined whether or not I'll pick up her English record. I feel hit or miss on her songs.

Unfortunately the pun doesn't work as well in English...

Anyone know where in Maryland Rie Fu used to live? I live there (here?) , and I'm curious. Smile If it's close to Annapolis, our "Hysterical" society will have a nice little fit, something to add to their collection. Laughing

Baltimore, IIRC.
