Casshern had plenty of potentual, but the story dragged too much to gain my full attention span. I'll stick to the1993 OVAs instead of recommending this DVD.
I'm equally disapointed in the live action Devilman movie as well, but then again who was'nt? |

This kind of response is why I've been subconsciously hesitant to say anything negative about Casshern. (And so I thank ANN for having the guts to do so). Its fans often seem to be rabid pseudo-intellectuals that jump at the chance to accuse the movie's detractors of being too dumb to "get" the oh-so-deep message.
Just because the movie bored me to tears doesn't mean that I'm part of the "dumb American action movie" crowd. I hated Transformers, for the record.
Fun fact about Casshern: You know that old man in the movie with the oxygen tank that looked like he was half-dead? That wasn't acting; the poor actor died before the movie even premiered.

Somebody should release the old '70s Casshaan anime. It was the best of the three versions. |

| This is the worst review i've ever read on ANN... I think many viewers were disappointed by the movie because they expected some kind of action movie. If you are interested in non-standard science-fiction movies, Casshern is worth a watch. I liked the movie... |

First off, BLASPHEMY at transformers... Then again, Optimus Prime is the patron saint of Epic, so that might cloud my judgment.
But I agree whole heartedly about the Pseudo intellects. In my senior year of highschool, a guy let me borrow his VCD of Casshern. I watched, it. returned it to him the next day. He asked if I liked it, I told him not really, then he kept going on about how it was awesome, just for all the symbolism. I called him an idiot saying it was about as symbolic as Street fighter the movie. The resulting nerd rage was worse than me watching the end of EVA (Which I could almost say the same thing about. Almost, cept I liked EVA.)

I read that Dreamworks totally cut up the US version, missing almost 30 minutes of footage and is edited like crap.
I know that despite the US version apparently being labeled as a "Director's Cut", the Director himself seemingly wants nothing to do with the US version. |
I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything positive about this film anyway, even when only the Japanese cut was available. |
Actually IGN gave it a really good score. That was the first I heard of the movie. |

This kind of personal attack is completely and totally inappropriate. Your tone is frequently bizarrely vitriolic and mean-spirited. You have absolutely no reason to talk to people like this , and if you keep it up, you'll find that you no longer have the option of continuing to spread your particular brand of nastiness around this community. |
Oops, my bad. Guess I hit the nail on that one with my guess. |

I wish I'd read this review before watching Casshern because it describes exactly how horrible the movie is. I personally thought the D grade was generous because the plot jumped around so much the movie didn't make any sense. I didn't care for the visuals and thought they were overdone and just added to the confusing mess of a movie.
Anyway, this Casshern review is pure genius and I hope to read more reviews by the author. |

| compass_bug wrote: | I wholeheartedly disagree with the review. I liked Casshern, and I liked it a lot, from beginning to end. I found the story simple, plot satisfyingly twisty, and the development/explication refreshingly subtle. The clues to what was going on were often subtle, as opposed to what you get in a Hollywood movie -- hammered-in explication that an eight-year-old can follow. That's not to say Casshern is a subtle movie, far from it. The visuals are way over the top, flooded with color, style, and extreme changes in style/technology. The movie remains on the edge of break-down throughout, just like Casshern, ready to blow apart at the seams, but I found this kept me captivated as much as the story and the action. I like manga and anime for the way they tell a story. EVERY story has "holes" in it, from the Bible to Bible Black. The way Casshern was presented celebrated the exuberance that can be found in manga and anime. I enjoyed it that Casshern was not done like, say, Tansformers -- a straight-ahead, no-brainer thrill ride. In addition to using any and every means to hand to tell the story, Kazuaki Kiriya did a more admirable job than many to bring into his movie threads of racism, intolerance, healing love and love that destroys, and the flaws in human vision.
I feel the reviewer was more interested in the sound of his own rhetoric than in presenting a balanced review. The reviewer's vitriol and language -- "viagrafied rabbits," "lobotomized test monkey on speed," and "stylistic masturbation" -- was "an orgy of authorial self-satisfaction" (to paraphrase the review.) I find that, point by point, the reviewer missed everything I liked about Casshern. Maybe it's the difference between the Japanese version and the US cut. Then again, maybe not. |
I totally agree with you. My wife and I rented this movie not to long ago figuring it was going to be a action packed movie. And while it was not exactly what we were expecting, we were both very happy with it. It was somewhat confusing, but any movie that makes you think about things the way that Casshern did is well worth seeing in my personal opinion. |

I refuse to buy the us dvd due to it being butchered, but I have the japanese dvd and I have to say that I actually enjoyed it. Granted it was waaay longer then it should have been and it did drag in parts, but I thought it was decent. That and I simply looooooooooooove the soundtrack (it's why I dig The Back Horn to this day).
Maybe the r1 release is that incoherent and lazily edited? |
