Tow Ubukata's "A Gambler's Life" column alone is worth the 80$ a year subscription in my opinion.
But if I’m not going to be getting it, I’d like my change back please. |

| This really came out of the blue, I'm pretty bummed. I always liked picking up a copy when I felt like reading anime news in print as opposed to on the computer; Newtype always had great color spreads too. |

I just feel sorry for all the people out of work. |
According to the article, there'll still be a magazine, so it's not like the Internet killed it.
On that topic, I wish Newtype did more with their website, like more internet-based and internet-only content, more frequently updated blog and columns, and maybe an archive of their past stories that don't necessarily have to have the current issue but could have started a month or two after each issue's release. Given, I have not kept up with the site in a few months, so it's possible they have improved on this, and it's possible they haven't. Maybe with the new magazine

You're a good poster here and are usually insightful so I'll take it easy on you, but this is an ignorant thing to say and tells me that you not only didn't read the magazine, you lazily inferred that it MUST be a mouthpiece because it's published by a company that sells anime.
Newtype had complete and proper editorial distance from ADV. ADV's marketing team had no easier a time getting coverage in the magazine than any other company. This is something I have personally verified on many levels. Even a cursory glance at the publication would tell you that they are obviously not favoring ADV.
Just clearing that up. This is a sad thing; it was a quality magazine and the people who worked there were really awesome. Sounds like they might still have a job, if ADV is in fact planning a new publication, so I can hope for the best. | *applauds zac*
Grrr this is upsetting i love newtype i remember buying the first issue, In fact i still have it in my closet. I never had a problem paying more for the magazine since it came with so many extras. I don't want them to go away. |

Not even a week ago I received an email notice that I’d better renew with only 4 issue left on my subscription, I’m really glad I didn’t renew right away. |
I would like to know this as well . . . good thing I hadn't renewed yet either. |

I've read through a couple of issues and found a preponderance of ADV titles covered, but it was just two issues, and I guess it might be due to ADV licensing more titles on average than other licensors. Forgive my ignorance.
Anyway, the article says there'll still be a magazine. Does that mean ADV already has ideas about their own magazine or have they found another magazine to bring here?

I bought it once and it was way to expensive for what I was getting.
There was too many pointless ads and there wasn't many things that were interesting. Sure, there was an article on TokiMemo, but other then that it was just filled with random crap.
Plus, I found it hard to navigate it... |

Mabye ADV'll give you a subscription to thier upcoming replacement magazine? Or refund you? That's usually what'd happen....
I'm curious how quickly we'll see the replacement referred to in the news....... it might be quick, or it could take awhile [there was a fair amount of time between the debut of Shojo Beat, and the end of Animerica Extra which it replaced...... though that was probably due to the big push VIZ was aiming for with retailers]. It wouldn't be too hard for ADV to just make a new magazine, and switch around the content, given the amount of original content that's put into Newtype USA [I wouldn't mind if they made a combo anime/manga anthology magazine] |

My subscription ends with the next issue & they've sent me renewal info....
I really liked thir publication. I used it to pick anime since I don't download.
I vote for they're tired of the translations, etc & are going to go with their own zine like ANime Insider. Possibly marketing studies have shown their biggest negative is price & popping over to something like Insider would allow them to drop their price. It would also allow them to pitch more of their own product if tat's their slant (like the Beckett titles focusing on DB/Z, etc.)
I always found they did a great job of covering anime by all the companies. |

I can easily see this being an issue of licensing fees for the NewType name. They may just start a new publication with the same stuff under a new title. |
This is what I expect is happening. Certainly with between 50k-75k circulation they can make the publication work financially. But perhaps that wasn't quite large enough to justify having to pay a large fee right out of the profit. Which would mean comparatively, Insider would be make money hand over foot.
I hope for the new publication, they at least keep the extra big pages.
Hopefully it won't be too long before the new one comes out. I think that will depend a lot on whether any individuals have any kind of wierd contract clause obligations to Newtype Japan. |

Oh, I do this too.
I always enjoyed their manga reviews. There's a lot of books I would have never tried if not for those. And I also liked the section "Japan Now." |

That's too bad. I love Newtype. The Japan version was the first anime fan magazine I ever bought. I have had many of my fanart submissions printed in both Newtype Japan and Newtype USA over the years.
But - I seem to remember them cancelling Newtype once before and it never materialized... Well, once can only hope for a false death once again... and I was just about to get a subscription for it because it always sells out at the local bookstore the day it comes in and I can never get a copy... oh well... |

| To throw some speculation into the discussion without too much insight into the print side of anime coverage, I can't imagine how the departure of Geneon from active anime distribution didn't hurt these magazines. That's a significant advertiser who no longer had any need to market to anime consumer. |
