Is this for real? I've always disliked Viz' translations in general, especially in anime, where a lot of stuff ain't translated/subtitled at all.

Viz, the biggest editing anime/movie/manga company ever, see animeprime.com

Why wouldn't it be? Anime and manga are one thing, but Viz has been approaching and marketing this in a completely different way. Plus, Alexander Smith is probably *the* best translator of Japanese popular culture currently in the business.

(...plus, while we're at it, how accurate a translation is, and how *effective* is is can sometimes be two very different things.)

Viz got an award for their translation job? After translating Shinigami three different ways in the first volume of Full Moon wo Sagashite ranging from 'Harbingers of Death' to 'Death', then having Takuto saying "Death is a semi-permanent job for people who committed suicide", they get an award for their translation skills? WTF.

Guys, this is for the translation of a NOVEL and for that specific adaptation team - not a judgement on Viz's translation/adaptation as a whole.

Yeah, it was for a team from Viz, if I understood the article correctly. Not the overall company.

This really shouldn't be difficult to understand. Viz employs more than one person to translate different media. This happens to have been translated by a very skilled translator. The award has nothing to do with work done by other people at Viz.

I'm glad to hear this news. I've been kind of wary of popular Japanese novels translated by English anime/manga companies since I've heard negative comments about some releases. Miyuki Miyabe has already had some of her mystery novels translated into English (I've read her novel All She Was Worth and I loved it!), so I'm looking forward to reading Brave Story now that I hear that it has a good translation.
