Man, two very great series here I'm sure. I've already seen Hunter X Hunter and as far as shounen goes, it's really up there as one of the best. Definitely worth checking out, outdated animation styled be darned. The OVAs have a lot more modern style animation, but you kind of have to see the rest of the series first. Wink I don't think it'd be all that big a problem though, I mean, we've had other series in recent years come to CN that was pretty outdated in animation style, right? I'd like to see them get the OVAs at the same time as well though, not just the series, and maybe air them all as one series (of course that'd be hard with the newer animation style of the OVAs....... Anime smile + sweatdrop)

But as much as I'd LOVE to see a good dub for HXH, I'd say Monster is more of what I'd want to get licensed the most, mostly due to the fact that I haven't seen it yet, where as HXH I have. Anime smile + sweatdrop I've heard nothng but not just good, but great things about it, and it's been on my insanely long must see list for quite a while now. Probably going to check out the manga eventually though, I'm surprised I haven't already.

This looks like Viz is doing its own upfronts to help pitch shows to networks. Which is different, as networks like Cartoon Network, [adult swim], & IFC usually announce shows they've got broadcast rights to. I haven't seen any of these, just heard buzz on message boards; this geezer doesn't do fansubs. Not sure about Hunter x Hunter, but Monster sounds like a fit for [adult swim]. There's talk that Buso Renkin is headed to [as], but only from 1 voice actress & no ANN confirmation. If [adult swim] doesn't get Monster, it will probably go to IFC or another network.
IFC only gets its shows from FUNimation, as far as I can remember, and they've already announced their 2008 shows.

This is not a Viz event, nor is it really similar to an upfront. This is a sales/trade convention for the television industry where distribution companies go to sell their catalogs to executives and buyers from all the major networks. If you've never been to a trade show, everybody gets their own space on the show floor, and buyers will circulate and talk to the various vendors about their wares (in this case television programs).

Basically what this press release is detailing is the catalog that they will be showcasing for potential buyers at NATPE. Not everything that shows up on these things necessarily turns into a full license. For example, Ichigo 100% was shopped by Viz at NATPE a couple years ago, but that show is still, to this day, unlicensed in the US.

Personally, I think both HXH and Monster's chances of being released here are heavily dependant on whether or not they can get a TV deal for them. I have to imagine Viz would want Hunter X Hunter on Toonami Jetstream at the very least, if not Toonami proper, and Monster's only real chance would be through Adult Swim. Viz doesn't really use any other major outlets for its older skewing stuff in the US. The question is more if Adult Swim would want it. Monster is loooong, can be a bit slow at times, is very intelligent and mature, and is not necessarily the most action-packed thing in the world. At 74 episodes, it's a pretty big ratings risk.

My heart stopped for a moment reading this.

Viz, I officially love you. I would love it if Monster could get on a more mainstream channel than CN; I also think there's a bit too much drama/not enough action, and that it moves a little too slowly for [adult swim]'s audience anyway. Regardless, amazing; I almost gave up hope that Monster would make it to this side of the ocean.

i'd say Monster has about a 50/50 chance of being on Adult Swim. on the one hand Viz has a good relationship with Williams Street, but on the other hand, Death Note is doing horrible in the ratings and they may not want to take a chance on a show like this again. Hunter X Hunter is a definite lock for Toonami and/or Toonami Jetstream. since Viz holds Naruto, Cartoon Network won't dare to defy them.

So Monster has a slight chance at a more mainstream channel? It would be a huge boon if a broadcast station got it ,even if they have to air a warning after every commercial and before the show saying it's not for kids even though it's animated (even though most anime fans wouldn't exactly enjoy having that warning around, it's a major step to getting anime off Saturday morning timeslots)

And another thing to think about...Monster (or any other Primetime anime (it's going to take time to get used to saying that if this pans out)) aren't affected by any Writer's Strike fiascos Razz

You're confusing up-fronts with markets. Up-fronts are posh trade shows put on by the networks to coax ad buyers into sponsoring their new shows. Markets are trade shows where the new content is sold to the networks.

Viz, and before the two merged, ShoPro, have had big booths at the markets for years. Some other anime studios do as well, but Viz usually has the biggest booth. Obviously, these companies don't own networks, and would have no business being at up-fronts unless the networks they are working with request their presence. (And up-fronts are going the way of the dinosaur anyway.)

Yes! This is exactly what American anime companies should be doing! I hope Monster does come to television, though at the moment, I can't think of exactly what channel. If I had to guess, it'd probably end up on Showtime or IFC, both channels I don't get. But it would be nice if they would show it on A&E, Bravo, or even TNT but that's probably too much to ask. As some have already mentioned, I just can't see Adult Swim airing it.

This is a perfect example of what anime companies should do for anime: get it out in front of the general public, instead of hiding it away on a few select premium channels or burying it in the Adult Swim backwaters.

After all this time that has passed since Monster and Hunter x Hunter and the others have originally aired, they really need to just put these out in DVD box sets already. It's nice that they want to try to get these on TV, but Monster will NEVER be picked up by any of the big networks, and Hunter x Hunter will probably get a hacked up Saturday or Sunday running with half the storyline removed in order to show it. They need to buy their own TV network and work with that instead...

Oh god... I DO NOT want to see Hunter x Hunter on Toonami... NO NO NO! It would be so heavily editted... like One Piece... or what they had done to my precious Eyeshield 21 on Jetstream. *quiver* I mean, Killua pulls people's hearts out of their chest. What would they do, cut out a chunk of the animation and pretend he 'stunned' his enemies by growing his nails out or something?

While I still think even the average Adult Swim audience won't tolerate the issue that is Hisoka, his sexuality could easily be toned down for it to make A.S. syndication with minimal other changes. Ah,... gotta love pedophiliac clowns. X_x

Thank you, Justin... my bad. In early 2005, ShoPro USA had licensed Zatch Bell for Cartoon Network & not long after the merger went through, you saw Viz's trademark at the end.
You would know what you're talking about regarding upfronts, but maybe the upfront itself is just changing media. CN had a website that contained a lot of upfront info, including shows that made it to the schedule in 2007, some that will premiere in 2008 & some that haven't seen the light of day... yet. As for [adult swim], they had a press release & not much else, with No Anime announced. Anime announcements like Death Note & Code Geass surfaced thanks to ANN, ToonZone & other sites.

I'm curious to know how Viz will pitch MONSTER to network execs. Will it be a dialogue-free trailer with a voice-over (i.e. The Orphanage's advertising)? Or will they hustle together VAs to dub lines to a pre-existing trailer?

My gut tells me it'll be the former, but I'm still interested to know.

In my ideal world, MONSTER would be aired in prime-time, on a network channel and widely-praised from all corners. But I'm content to have a complete boxset to pre-order from whoever licenses it and releases it here.

I'm really hoping Viz will start releasing Monster on DVD, whether or not it get picks up by a network. That said, I think Monster would do extremely well on a channel like TNT. If they're worried that the overall pace might turn away viewers, they can air two episodes in an hour block...that might help considering the pace of Monster. We'll have to wait and see though on what happens.

I really really want to see a good release of Honey and Clover to DVD myself. I know it will never get shown on TV but it is seriously one of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen, and I'd really love to own it one day. *is planning to buying the manga volumes when they come out*

HxH I could see doing okay if they do a bleach or naruto like dub, still keeping in some of the more violent stuff (which actually got tamed down qutie a bit in the anime anyway), but then again, itll probably get shoved on some crappy timeslot if it isnt kidafied Anime hyper!

I just fell in love with the series when I watched it over christmas break and I could easily see it capturing some of the North American market on TV. And to be honest, I prefered the series style to the ova style @.@ The former just has more appeal and less generic-ness to it.

Viz has already licensed Honey and Clover, and likely that license includes the second series.
