Is it possible that it's only an issue because you're making it one? And maybe you're just reading into things that aren't there? And that you might be taking his light-hearted look at anime an 'insult to an art form'? Because I'm guessing you probably are, and if so, I would seriously suggest stepping back and realizing that nothing is worth that amount of anxiety. Seriously.

Let me try this one last time, so maybe someone out there will get what I am saying. I am a poor communicator. This episode of Anime Jump seemed to be "all in good fun". I prefer that, even if I don't necessarily like the bit. I'm sure that Mike isn't "out to get anyone," but a lot of comedians with "grumpy" or "mocky" monologues do sound kind of mean for the sake of mean, akin to the first episode of Jump. Think the difference between Letterman and Conan O'Brien. Both are funny, but O'Brien never sounds mean. Even while saying something that in other contexts might be considered mean, it all sounds/feels like it's "all in good fun". This ep of Jump was more like Conan. "All in good fun".

The second Anime Jump was a healthy step up in quality and tone. I dare even say some of it was more clever. A few things actually made me laugh. Definitely, more fitting of the quality of ANN as a whole.

Do I make any sense at all, or am I on my own here?

Heh heh. No, that would be a guy named Jason Beck, AKA the English voice of MD Geist (hey, it was CPM). Mr. Beck passed away years ago.

I want Mike Toole to be as Irreverent as he wants to be, it's his forte... Razz

I wonder if he ever found the East West release of StarBirds (The Edited movie that 3B productions (Tranzor Z) made out of Tosho Daimos), That deserves a place in his segment. Cool

StarBirds was a surprisingly good condensation, or at least it was better than Voltus Five. It probably helped that Daimos episodes tended to be more repetitive than Voltes V's. Then again it's been about twenty years since I saw it.

For the "Rattatouile = anime?" issue...those lists are based on the Japanese definition of anime = all things animated.

I got over and moved on from last month's Kanon "controversy," so I thought Toole would've as well. But I'm glad to hear that he genuinely watched the first half of the series to be able to appraise it as "six hours of pretty, snow-kissed tedium." If that's his opinion, I feel no need to argue with it.

Galaxy Angel, on the other hand, I never really saw as moe. Sure, it's got pretty girls with adorable quirks, but I couldn't think of them in that "cute kitten/little sister/needing protection" light. Plus, the random episodic nature of the series precludes the formation of strong emotional attachments; you know that even if something bad happens to somebody, it'll all be erased and reset by the time the next episode rolls around.

But moe or not, I do agree that GA is a fun, Loony-Tunes-esque franchise. It lost a bit of steam in the third season when they introduced those "spice-things-up" new characters of Kokomo and Malibu, but I've got high hopes for the fourth and "final" season. Toole's pricing comparison between GA A and GA Rune seemed a bit off...the one single-episode disc of Rune was $19.99, not $39.99. Even so, I'm pretty sure I've paid less for all 3 seasons released so far than the total MSRP of Rune.

And once again I do like these "Old and Stupid" segments...it's great hearing about these "foundational" anime. I wouldn't mind seeing something like Mahou Tsukai Tai Sally released over here, ever since I saw it referenced in an episode of Paniponi Dash.

OMG, Mario's facial expression @ the end for: We're FINALLY on iTunes. 10/10. GREAT show this week, loved the learning about some of the classics; BTW the VA(Voice Actor) for the Princess Sapphire is the VA from Princess Nine. who? Neinei, the team's manager.

I watched it originaly in VHS (remember those) in Spanish, When Walmart and dollar stores in the US started to sell $1 dvds by Digiview and East West Dvd, anime adaptations like StarBirds, Magnos the Robot (Adaptation of Magno Robo Gakeen, it's not that Sucky AWO) and the Joseph Lai korean animated catalog. I have managed to get my hands in most of them. Wink

Sounds to me as if you just like him better when he's not poking fun at a show you like.

Not persay. Maybe it's the difference of a positive "gag review" vs a negative one? I don't know. I like Kanon but I can admit there are some inherently stupid things about it (a bit of which Mike mentioned obviously). It's definitely not a perfect show.

As I mentioned earlier, this segment just seems more "all in good fun". I'm not sure how else to describe it. I know its a massive sin to criticize anything these days unless you are going along with the group, but that's just how I feel. I hope the segment keeps improving. With the right balance of tone and timing, amongst other things, I could see this being more good than bad for ANNtv.

I do find it ironic that (not in so many words exactly) I was basically promised ANNtv wouldn't be doing anything like this just a week or two before episode one. Hopefully my "slippery slope" fears of nonstop stop motion mouth celebrity impressions and other such "not terribly funny" shananigans leaking into the "non-humor" related content are unfounded. God knows no other anime/video game media related show seems to be able to maintain some self-control and entertainment value at the same time. ANNtv stands alone as far as I know... Maybe Anime TV but they can afford to turn down the "volume" so to speak a bit.

So, you consider Anime SERIOUS BUSINESS, then?

That would be pushing it. Maybe it's my old age speaking, or maybe what passes for humor and professionalism is different these days... I don't know. All I can really say is what I've already said. no one seems to care or even be receptive. I've stated my case. If that is that, well that's okay. Majority has spoken. ANN seems to be run by people who know what they are doing. I'll trust them for now, and if it goes south, I won't then be the only one with a concern.

I played this again to se the 2nd & so far LAST "Anime Jump Show". Did Toole get tired of doing this, run out of material, or there were contractual AKA money issues with ANN?

I sure hope RightStuf does get Choppy & the Princess AKA Princess Knight. I've been recently watching & slightly snarkily synopsizing Astro Boy on the Adult Swim Message Boards. Once you get used to the cartoonish designs & humor of Tezuka, it's pretty good. Sadly, unless Mike Lazzo wants to start another shitstorm, the last 52 dubbed episodes won't make it to Adult Swim on TV or their video player.

Which is sad; I'm a self-proclaimed geezer, but IMHO, you can't appreciate the anime of the present unless you have a slight understanding for anime of the past. I wonder if Justin Sevakis (Buried Treasure & Buried Garbage) gets that? Wink
