Absolutely spot on, Carlo. There are some great episodes in this series (like "Purgatory Girl"), while the rest felt like the writers were simply regurgitating the same things over and over again in a slightly revamped package. Thankfully the wonderful art direction (and Mamiko Noto) alleviates that somewhat. If only the animation were on par with the artistry .... |

This is one of the series where if you like it enough to go on, you're in for a gigantic treat towards the end, and might end up even loving the series. And if you stop watching after a few of the rather horrible episodes of the beginning, you're missing out.
This and the last two DVD reviews got a grade of B at best overall. I can tell you now that by the time the last dvd of this season comes out, it's gonna change to an A- at the very least.
It's a shame that Futakomori (season 2) starts out at square one again, following a very similar formula, and only getting better towards the end. But in some respects, Futakomori's finale is even more amazing. |

I enjoyed the teacher episode on what seems to be a lackluster DVD. Like many Funimation DVDs the menu screen seems to have it's music on the loud side.
This series has plenty of darker scenes and I'm also still having problems with Funimations authoring in regards to blacks that look awful. I have my screen calibrated so that BTB 0-15 levels (thanks optimizer background) is on par with black (thanks shadow) and I still poor and splotchy black levels on FUNimation DVDs.
I've also had issues with the very bottom horizontal lines of the image being off center with the newer batches of Funimation DVDs. Although this isn't noticeable, especially since many televisions will overscan this line, it becomes apparent when the image does a vertical scroll. |
