Awesome! The live-action series was still good even though they took out Ono's homosexuality, but I think I'll prefer this version because it sounds like it'll stick closer to the original plot. |

Only a little bit, though. |

This news makes me ridiculously happy! The "gay of demonic charm" is on his way...
As another poster said earlier (sorry, no quote), I'm also curious to see how they animate Yoshinaga's story. Her drawings are so sparse, yet so expressive -- I hope the anime can capture that. |

Good for the author, fans, and gay people among them who try to get media recognition. That's terrible that a gay character is just erased because it offends some social taboo. From what I hear, Japanese society as a whole is pretty in denial of homosexuals in Japan. Having gone to a gay nightclub in Tokyo with a gay friend a bunch of other straight friends, I myself can vouch that there are gay people in Japan. |
I understand they like to deny there are gay people in Japan, or maybe it's just they believe there aren't many. I have heard thru the yaoi community the common belief is there are far more gays in the US & we are far more accepting of it. I mean, one book had a story of a US senator who revealed he was gay & was still re-elected (I'm thinking yeah, sure). It's sort of amusing the ideas the Japanese seem to hold of Americans (I joke with my teen there is only New York, San Francisco & LA. The rest of the US doesn't exist because that's all one seems to see in manga).
Antique Bakery isn't BL. There's 1 gay character so there is a gay sub-plot involving Ono & the gay ber & his lovers & the fact he's "demonically gay" & can seduce even straight guys over with his charms which has cost him most of his jobs. The owner knew Ono in school & turned him down which is why they can work together-there is no spark (except probably in a few fan-fics). The boxer has taken one too many hits to the head so he needs to change careers & wants to become a baker so he hires on as apprentice in the bakery. The manager loves ladies & wants to open a bakery because women love sweets.
This is why it's popular enough here--it is more slice-of-life about a bakery, the people who run it & the customers who enter it. One guy happens to be gay, but the other 3 aren't, not unlike what one might encounter in any business one might enter.
So if you're imagining lots of two guys exchanging longing looks & kisses & sneaking into the back room-nope. I've seen more gay action in some guy titles (Hanagata/Saber Marionette) |
