The latest fad in Hollywood seems to be adapting kid/young adult fantasy novels for the big screen (The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Golden Compass, Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, etc.), so I think a live-action CardCaptor Sakura would be adorable on the big screen. I think they could do a reasonably good job of condensing the first story arc into a good 1.5 hour movie and the challenge Sakura would face would be spoiler[if she didn't collect the clow cards in time her friends/family would lose their memories].

The girl who played in Little Miss Sunshine would make a great Sakura, I think.

But how will the movie fit all those card captures in just ninety minutes? The first three or four, then a montage, with the last two or three at the end?

I will admit, a Cardcaptor Sakura movie would be a family friendly affair. But I have doubts that it would be easy to adapt to the big screen.

Yeah there are a lot of cards, so I was thinking they just reduce the deck down to the elemental cards for Sakura to catch and then for Li to catch the majority of them off-screen.

I dunno, L has got to be the most hardest character to pin down. The fact that he's a genius, but a recluse and has some anti-social traits, plus the way he looks and sits and whatnot......Hollywood would easily screw it up by default.

I would think that if there was a live action movie made, L would have to be played by a newcomer. Someone that is willing to take a chance of playing such a character.

And risk being typecast into similar roles......

I'm pretty skeptical about big hollywood making anything well. They usually take a good story and ruin by hacking it to shreds and trying to condense a longer story into 2hrs. That being said, if the Battlestar Galactica people could get together with Ridley Scott (Bladerunner) and do Last Exile the right way how cool could that be? A Fantasy/Space Epic! It's been ages since we've had a truly spectacular Sci-Fi cult classic. Yeah, I know, keep dreaming....That one will never happen.

Seriously though, there are a lot of great stories in anime-dom that Hollywood could plunder. Something like Lovely Complex or Kodocha may not be high brow, but they could totally translate to US audiences. I can think of so many that would work.

Exactly. For example, The Lord of the Rings books are WAY more deep and detailed than the movies. The movies chopped out some of the really interesting facts that only the book had.

Sorry for going off topic.

I would say Burst Angel and Full Metal Panic would make good films

A story like FMP is what I would call a "bread and butter film."

It's a story that is quite possible to have a beginning, middle and end while still leaving a crack open for a sequel.

But what I mean by "bread and butter" is that it's the sort of film that an actor/actress can do for a few weeks, get the multi-millions and then do an indy film that not too many will see.

Reaching back for an example: Mel Gibson did the Lethal Weapon movies and then did Hamlet.

I just thought of 2 anime that would probably do well as Hollywood films.

Vampire Hunter D and Karas.

Vampire Hunter D can come off as a less comical version of Van Hellsing and Karas will be like a new Batman like film.

Yeah, I agree. I'm just saying that they cut out a lot of information that was only told in the book. If only J.R.R Tolkien was the director...

If only he was the director...it might be worse with his 0 film experience and trying to make 3 20 hour films?

Give credit where it's due and realize people write books or make movies as seperate things because of how each form works.

Anyway, I'll second the Bartender "nomination". I suppose they would need extensive training, just as if they were going to be in an action movie though. It'd be nice if the actor playing the bartender was very good at bartending like the actual mixing, pouring, etc. Looking as laid back but refined as the title character in the anime might be difficult in real life. It'd be something of a drama piece working more off of timeline and interaction like Babel, Traffic or Crash,(except extremely localized, comparing to them) working on what the last poster offered. However, I think I might want only part of the anime offerings as well as original storylines to be brought in. Word for word transfer would just bore me.

Uh...forget Cocktail? I think Bartender borrows largely from the movie. Besides, who wants to see bartenders in action? Movies like that are what someone here called "a bread and butter film". I think movies with elements of drama and emotion that are common to all make better movies.
I'm right with you on Lord of the Rings though.

The primary reason I thought Bartender would be a good Hollywood movie was precisely because of how the bar is used as a frame to tell several different stories that are quite dramatic and have a lot of emotion.

I feel the need to ask, and please understand that I don't intend this question to be hostile, but have you actually watched Bartender?

This is a plot summary for Bartender

This is for Cocktail.

The only similarity is that they both involve one or more bartenders.
