I've always thought that Akiyuki Shinbo's true masterpiece of vapid excess is The SoulTaker. It's silly, gaudy and even dull at times, but the art direction and superhero overkill are amazing.

Came here to post this, but I honestly like SoulTaker-- it's outrageously obtuse, sure, but the visuals and nutty ideas (pitched battle in the SPACE CASTLE) really save it. Of course, looking at Shinbo's pedigree, yeah, a lot of that stuff isn't worth bragging about.[/spoiler]

As a Shinbo fan, I've always intended to check out that title but never got around to it because it looked like one of his "normal" shows, i.e. one where he doesn't use or over-use his flashy, gimmicky style , as in LYRICAL NANOHA or HIDAMARI SKETCH. But the review has gotten me very interested in it.

*checks Nanoha info*

Wow, I didn't realize Shinbo had anything to do with Nanoha. He seems to be more "normal" in his non-Shaft titles. It's in his Shaft titles that he tends to be very, uh, experimental, I guess, and his trademark style tends to come out.

So Urban Vision is kaput? Yipes! And they were around for a long time too!

No, Urban Vision's still going. They're just slowly putting out live-action stuff instead of releasing anime.

I remember watching this quite a few years ago, possibly on VHS, in a friend's basement with the lights off, and at the end thinking "I have no idea what that was... but I kinda liked it." I've always been half-tempted to buy the DVD but I'm not sure I'd actually be rewatching it much, heh. Still, it's definitely visually engrossing if nothing else.

Yay! Can I use this line of defense for some of my "guilty pleasure" anime shows?

Well, at least they tried to be deep, and at least I got to watch!

I never thought of TotDM this way. Prolly on account of being a girl, this doesn't apply to people like me...since all the violence/sex is majorly targeted at males, it kinda cancels out a lot of the intrinsic value of the music and character design. Maybe if someone compiled it as a slide show of character art and any well-orchestrated action scenes, set to the soundtrack, then I'd be willing to give it another shot? Razz

I decided to finally watch this DVD which has been sitting on my shelf for over five years. I was surprised that legendary Akira Kamiya and the now deceased Kaneto Shiozawa are both in t his OVA along with Toshihiko Seki.

I was also surprised at how poor the image quality of the DVD was. There are some serious rainbow and artifacting issues. Then again I shouldn't be surprised considering when it was made.

Sadly I didn't get to finish Soul Taker, it was hard to sit through at times.
