Well, since I wasn't quite sure who you were referring to, Emily Deschanel played Bones herself, and Michaela Conlin played Angela Montenegro. Neither of them would work, imo. Lucy Liu, nadda. And as for noir elements in GitS, I never really thought it had much of a noir feel to it. Maybe I should give it a rewatch, though. And as for Spielberg, I'm sorry, but he has had good movies since Private Ryan. Add: Wait, you were talking about noir elements in SAC? No. The movies I could maybe see that being argued for, but not SAC. |

| actually the SAC series has abit of Noir in them, not as much as say GITS 1 and 2 movies, but they do have them. Last time Steven tried to do a future movie it turned out to be a 3 hour long movie that went no where | ||||||||

| Well ok, A.I. I will admit wasn't his greatest work. Although I've always liked it for some reason. But I do seem to be in the minority in regards to that opinion.
Anyway, I don't think GitS will suffer from the same fate that A.I. did. Even if Spielberg takes liberties with the original plot, it shouldn't be difficult to put his own spin on it and give the movie a conclusive finish. Of course this is all very speculative at this point, as it's not even clear what material is going to be covered. Again, here's me hoping for the best. |

Ignorance is bliss. I'm actually pretty excited. I can't say I'm a die-hard fan of the anime, or even a fan for that matter, but I can't wait. For one, it'll probably be better then DBZ (the pictures I've seen look like badly dressed cosplayers), but you never know. |

| No, no, for goodness sake, NO Kate Beckinsale! The only thing I've seen her act well in was Van Helsing and....well, that sort of speaks for itself. The Major kind of requires awesome acting skills in addition to boobs.
Anyway, DonQuigleone brought up a good point about the original movies actually being very different from the manga. I haven't read the manga yet (I'll get around to it, I swear! Stop staring at me! -shame-), but from what I've heard and from my past experience with Shirow manga it's a lot closer to SAC in atmosphere; the extremely serious nature of the movies was entirely the work of Mamoru Oshii. I'm not really seeing this as a super-serious film that's going to be completely botched; I'm just wondering if they'll be able to pull off that no-nonsense dramatic irony feel. |

| I seriously doubt Stevie has the fingers for this piece and by the way... no no no don´t think its a good idea that he gets his fingers on this one. Its far to good to be in the hands of a mere buisnessmaker | ||||||||

Then I am afraid, I think, that we arrive at an impass And hey, Kate Beckinsale wasn't too bad in the Underworld movies! As for comparing the manga to SAC: I wouldn't say that they are a whole lot more similar to each other than the manga and movies. As you know I assume, the 1st movie followed Vol. 1 of the manga closely in a lot of ways, although they diverge significantly in the second half of the story (well not thematically, but rather in terms of setting). As for Vol. 2 of the manga...well...that's something of a beast unto itself. Interesting to be sure, but different from everything else in the GitS franchise imo. Of course, the one very obvious reference to the manga that can be found in SAC is the last scene in the last episode of 2nd Gig. I found that a lot of fun to watch. By the way, I totally agree about the dub cast for GitS: SAC. All these fools claiming we are lazy don't know what they're missing
Perhaps Uwe Boll would be better suited, then? |

That's certainly true; recently I wrote a whole essay about Motoko and sexuality, plus much more, which can be found here. However, you still need an actress who won't play her as the generic action chick with huge guns. A lot of Motoko's character comes from the fact that she's introspective and has that enormous disconnect between her soul and whatever body she happens to be using, and to lose that is to lose a lot of the heart of the GitS universe. |

The franchise has had 3 movies, regardless of being in different continuities: Ghost in the Shell (Oshii) Innocence (Oshii) SAC Solid State Society (Kamiyama) /nitpick With Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks aboard, I'm cautiously optimistic. Giving things to a new-ish screenwriter worries me, might have to see Street Kings now to put my mind at ease. And fire the guy that did the Innocence DVD art. Casting-wise, Kate Beckinsdale really does just about nail the look of Motoko, but her preformances have struck me as a bit underwhelming thus far(no pun intended), I could still go along with her though. Jolie'd be a maybe, but can she be as cold/detached as the Major? Summer Glau strikes me more as who I'd want to see as Gally/Alita in Cameron's Battle Angel, and I agree that Devon Aki is right out(tiny, wooden acting). |

Error: Two theatrical releases and a made-for-TV movie make for three movies. This is the entirety of the GitS franchise that's being referred to, not just SAC. |

Indeed. Unfortunately, I think this will be the hardest aspect of Motoko/GitS to adapt. Not impossible, but it will certainly make for a challenge when casting her. On that note:
Quite so, quite so. Also, the screenwriter for Street Kings is on board for this? I'm in agreement with you then, I think I'll also have to see the movie for some peace of mind. |

| I've got a feeling that we are all going to be in for a treat. Although there hasn't been a lot of news on Spielberg's "Lupin III" project I think there's a lot of hope for this movie to be made. | ||||||||

I'm interested to see how Dreamworks will handle the cast. This is supposedly future Japan and whatnot, but seeing as this is an American production now this will probably be in English and have a ethnically wider cast. A couple years ago for that reason alone I would spaz and conclude that this just couldn't be the way to do a good adaption, but now I realize that this is an adaption, so they must adapt! I just wonder how they'll handle the cultural translations. "Maybe future Japan is more multicultural?" or something like that. I think if Motoko goes Anglo you'd be hard pressed to do better than Summer Glau. I think Kate Beckinsale, Angelina Jolie, and Devon Aoki are all more or less horrifying choices for infinite reasons. It should be so mind-searingly obvious to ANYONE really. The real challenge with actresses and actors is that its hard to find someone suitable, much less someone suitable and athletic. |

| I can actually see Summer Glau doing the part. I'd just have to look past her body, which is smaller and less... Curvy, than Motoko's, and the fact that she seems to young for the part. Of course I have no idea what Motoko's age is so...... | ||||||||
