FUNIMATION SPEAKS FROM SAKURACON

They said don't PANIC!

I think i understand something now

Bandai is taking on a new model of business, what fansubbers do is getting it out fast, defeat that by releasing it sub-only fast, and it puts fanubbers out of commision because well they just don't have reason to bring it here if its already here and cheap.

ADV is probably concentrating all of its efforts in trying the same thing, trying new things, and they couldnt see themselves handling Gurenn Lagann like that yet so they made a leap of faith and handed it off to Bandai to do what they couldnt do.

don't PANIC!

Top Gun, yes I do agree with you about Bandai's general pricing and release scheme. I was referring only to their upcoming new habits, which none of us have fully experienced and know what to expect yet. Namely, the confusion of having 3+ versions of Haruhi Vol. 1 out right now, 3+ versions of Haruhi Vol. 4 out right now, etc. And of course there will be 4+ versions after the box set(s) come out. The Code Geass thing does seem to be good, but I will hold off on that until it actually comes out and I see how many versions actually end up coming out and their prices. Gurren-Lagann is obviously going to get 3+ or 4+ versions too, in a new way. It's all quite confusing. It's probably a good thing to have more selection available, but who knows. It could annoy the casual buyer. It does annoy me, who am (or at least used to be) a moderately serious buyer. The most hardcore buyers like Randall Miyashiro probably all love it, though.

For me the annoyance is that the special editions cost too much, especially when there is more than one special edition of the same episodes (Haruhi Vol. 1, 4...but probably soon to be more in the future)! They are somewhat overpriced, even though the regular editions are very cheap as you said. This price difference just makes me uncertain which to buy as my wallet is limited, and leans me towards apathy and just ignoring Bandai Entertainment releases altogether. Or waiting for the boxset, but even then that encourages me to forget them entirely if I have to wait that long.

Also, you REALLY want Black Lagoon to be a "sub-only" release?
You'd rather a non release?

...

Wait, that's a stupid question to ask on an ANIME form now isn't it?

Well I'm very Disappointed at ADV's loss of this title. And more disappointed at the having to wait till next year to get dubbed release. As some one who remembers buying anime in the 90's and being forced to choose between dubbed and subbed formats on VHS, there is no way I will spend my money on what I consider to be half a release.

I didn't expect that the 9 episode sub release would only go for $30 MSRP. This is an even better price per episode deal than the Media Blasters sub only releases. I'm starting to think that dubs cost more than I originally expected if the price per episode is cut in half for Bandai Entertainment. I really hope that Bandai will release more series in three stages (affordable sub-only early release, premium dub/sub with extras release, eventual Anime Legends ultra affordable brick) along with the occasional special/limited edition versions. This approach should be beneficial to the various anime fans out there.

The price I always hear thrown around is $8,000-$10,000 per episode. If true, then in GL's case that's an extra $216k-$270k out of pocket.

Since Gurren Lagann has a fairly large cast, many of whom are often "on screen" at the same time, I'd be rather surprised if the cost of dubbing this series does not end up being significantly higher.

They could always reuse the same voice actor for multiple characters. Just look at the voice cast for the GTO dub.
