Isn't that why Del Rey has translation notes in all their manga?

All SZS stories are about "word of the week" kanji wordplay, like "Itoshiki Nozomu" - "Zetsubou"(thus the name of the manga).
Translation notes can explain why it was funny in japanese - but they can't make it funny in English.

Holy... Best licensing news I've heard in a while, to be honest. This news pretty much made my day. Unfortunately, the wait WILL be despair-inducing. Laughing

I read a few scanlations a while back and found it funny, to be fair I know a bit more about Japanese culture than others, but they could be targeting people like me.

Also the artwork seriously rocks, particularly the chapter coverpages

While SZS is quite funny, as an ethnic Chinese it's not very comfortable to read Kumeta's China-bashing (and foreigners-bashing in general) jokes every week. Rolling Eyes Not to mention the Chinese edition probably needs the least amount of translation notes due to compatible kanji characters; the very first joke of the manga (糸色Arrow 絶望) requires no translation for any native Chinese speaker at all.

By the way, Hiroshi Kamiya is coming to Taiwan next week.

Just thought I'd point out that the Samurai 7 link in the article goes to the anime, not the manga.

Fixed.

I love Del Rey's translation notes, and I wish other publishers would do them more often (I'm looking at you, Viz).

If I had one complaint about them (and it's a minor one), I wish Del Rey would print the actual kanji when discussing them in the translation notes. They only write the romaji. If they could put the kanji next to the romaji (like in parenthesis), then I would be 100% happy instead of 99%.

Awesome news. I've seen a little of the SZS anime and I love it's sense of humor. Can't wait to read the manga.

Exactly why I wish that Hayate The Combat Butler was released by Del Rey and not Viz. We're lucky SZS will be released by Der Rey. Their higher price is well worth it.

I find the licensing of Samurai 7 interesting - I assume it is a manga spinoff of the Samurai 7 anime. It gives me a little hope for the manga spinoffs of other Gonzo original works like Kiddy Grade and Burst Angel. Except.. has Del Rey ever published anything that isn't owned by Kodansha?

I haven't watched the anime, 絶望先生, but I can tell you one thing.
You are shameless enough to pick a quarrel with me about the anime
made by and for Japanese that you even download illegally.

At least you need to buy it legally to express your opinion about it.
The Japanese proverb "thieves never show the slightest compunction about
their crimes" is the one that describes your shameless attitude.

貴方は幸いにして台湾在住なのですから、少しはTibetの事も考えなさいな。
日本の過去を責めるなら、現在進行形で同じ過ちを犯している中国政府も
批判しなくてば、ダブルスタンダードになりますよ?
Confused

First, I didn't even know who you were, how could I "pick a quarrel" with you? Turns out that you have had participated the "incorrect credits" thread, yet in that thread I had never confronted you (or even replied directly at your two posts) in any way.

Second, obviously you have no idea that SZS has been licensed and translated by Tongli Publishing.

I read it legally. Period. Apologize properly and retract you post, or get the hell out of here.

Even now the other people on 2ch are watching/observing you.

Blimey. That's pretty scary.

It's like you folks on 2ch are an all-seeing secret society. Just like the Illuminati...only with fewer social skills and significantly reduced odds of getting laid, obviously.

My comment got deleted. I wonder if some NG word was in it.
So, a translated version was out already. Please excuse me for that.
Anyway, I hope you continue to purchase legitimate products just like that. Smile
