Wow, those are impressive numbers. And that should be some major money for Gainex. Always good to hear positive industry news.

I too want to see this. But it probably won't be released in America until DVD sales in Japan drop off to near nil. I doubt Gainex is even offering the license yet.

I'm assuming you're willing to pay 5,700 yen for the special edition (~$55). If you're not, then you pay for the difference in prices with time. If assuming only copies of the regular edition sold (4,700 yen), retail sales were worth ~1,029,300,000 yen or ~$9,897,115. Of course, a large amount of the higher-priced special edition DVDs sold, so the total amount of retail sales for the first week must be higher. In any case, I doubt these films will be very cheap to license (and it is safe to say that demand for them in North America will not as high as it is in Japan, although I'm willing to be proven wrong). Evangelion is special, after all. It's likely that the films' worth at the moment may be beyond what the R1 industry is willing and able to pay.

Price is not my concern. I would gladly pay $70 or more if I could get one with the cells and everything. I am just mad that I always have to wait for the good stuff. I am still waiting on Code Geass Season 1 and dang season 2 is already on eps. 4! It almost makes me want to take Japanese lessons so I can avoid this whole needing subtitles thing and just buy Japanese DVDs period.

Agreed, up to the point on learning Japanese. I just don't have the discipline to learn a second language. And so I continue to wait for R1 releases...

Except for this one. Just ordered my copy Very Happy

I received the special edition yesterday and it's really well done. You get 2 copies of the movie (no subtitles) in different aspect ratios (?) on 2 discs, disc 2 has a few extras (not enough), 5 frames of the film, some fillers with stills, and it's all in a sturdy slip case. The film itself looks better than the original series and is animated in the same style. All in all it's worth the money (plus shipping).

Cd Japan lists it as "Out of Print" so good luck finding a copy of the LE version. It's a sad thing that R1 buyers get screwed on the LE front. Crying or Very sad

Aww, barnacles. Sad

Actually the movie isn't by GainAx. Anno started up his own company, Studio Khara, which is making the movies. As for the intricate details of who gets all the money, who knows?

Ah, that I can understand (personally, I do import R2s but...). It's certainly a major title, I would think. Pity Bandai Visual had nothing to do with it, as a title like Evangelion would be ideal for a simultaneous, worldwide release, I think. Still, I'm sure someone will bite on the license at some point. It all comes down to how much they want for it... I do hope when it does get licensed, it will be by an R1 company that does a proper LE.

Also, it seems HMV.co.jp still has it in stock as well, in case anyone is looking to order it.

Wow, that's an impressive number of DVDs sold in less than a week.

But actually that figure only raises huge skepticism on my part. How exactly does Oricon generate its figures? Are the sales systems in every major retail store in Japan computer-automated to report back to some organization about how many units were purchased by customers? I find that hard to believe. I do not believe any lesser methods than that can generate a reliable sales figure in realtime. Over time, I think that less involved methods can give a reliable sales figure, but not in a few days.
