| I looked through the thread and didn't really see mention of this, so...what is the best order for watching Patlabor? I know one of the first posters was recommended to get the OAVs next given that s/he already had the movies, but for someone just diving in, what is the recommendation? I would assume the first OAV as that's what's listed first after the manga in the Encyclopedia, but I wouldn't mind some confirmation. I've been recommended Patlabor before (although the person didn't mention which particular version I should watch), so I thought I should go ahead and ask. |

| Both the original OAV and television series introduce the characters to the audience. The general consensus is to watch the OVAs first especially if you are planning on eventually watching both series. Similar to television series like Tenchi Universe, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, El Hazard the OAV is not needed to understand what is going on in the series. Just make sure to watch the television series before the New Files series. The movies probably should be seen at any point after the first OAV series (or first few DVDs of the television series if you decide on skipping the OAV series) since it doesn't spend much time in introducing the characters but also doesn't have any major spoilers for the television series. |

Well, first, it's best to recognize that Patlabor anime has two alternate universes, sort of like Tenchi Muyo. The first starts in the original OVA then goes to the three movies. The second starts with the first TV series and ends with the New Files OVA.
Starting with either the first OVA or the TV series is fine. The TV series tends to be a little wackier and has some very mixed results, where the OVA tends to be a little more mature, even at its most bizzare. Just be aware of the different chronologies.
I think, actually, that the third Patlabor movie takes place before the second. |

You know, I would almost recommend watching the third movie first. Mainly because in the third film, the Patlabor team is pretty much making a cameo in the film. That's why people don't like that film, because it says "Patlabor" but you could take the labors out and it would still be the same film.
So if you haven't seen any other Patlabor anime, you may have a better chance at enjoying the film, because you won't be expecting much.
But on the downside, if you actually get this film on DVD, you *have* to get the special edition with Mini Pato, or you will end up rebuying it later. And you can't watch Mini Pato until you have seen the TV and the OVAs. So you may want to save WXIII until later, but then you will be disappointed in the film because the main Pato cast is hardly in the film. |

I love that movie... it's a competent and exciting monster movie who's influence is massively underrated... HELLO HOST! Hi CLOVERFIELD!
To the poster with the question about the series' watching order, please look at my post on the second page. |

| Not saying Patlabor TV or Ova’s are not good or anything, but for my money the Buried Treasure in Patlabor is Patlabor 2 the movie. |

| I'm just going to bump this thread to say that I got the OVA series, watched it, and enjoyed it. I'll likely get the first TV box next month. Thanks all. |
