| Sorry, I'm just bitter that we didn't see a Geneon or CPM license rescue. | ||||

What doesn't? Oh, that's right. Nausicaa. [why has noone licenced the YKK manga yes?] [to be honest, GATSU has a point, although I actually suspect it's accidental. The gap between shows-stuffed-full-of-pretty-girls and the bona-fide harem shows is Not Large; for another example, Haibane Renmei is at it's heart very much "sad girls in snow [with wings and halos!]". But there's nothing inherently wrong with harem shows, it's just that there's a lot of them and, y'know, sturgeon's law.] |

I can't comment on Kanon or Sakura Wars not having seen them, but Lucky Star and Azumanga are certainly not "girl watching." Yes, they revolve around girls, but they are hilarious. I adore Azumanga! |

| No dub? This makes me sad. Still, I should give Aria a look to see if it's worth buying... | ||||

How many people would buy it then? I don't know the balance point of US manga licensees, but here in Taiwan the point is about 3,000 copies per volume per press. If you print less than that you wouldn't be able to earn your investments back. For the record, Taiwan even had Afternoon MAGAZINE licensed couple years ago, but it was shut down due to low sales. Personally I don't believe YKK can sell 3,000 copies per volume here; rather, it could be part of the deal between Kodansha and Tong Li so the latter can ensure the license of top performers e.g. Ah! My Goddess. As far as I know, Nasu is the only Afternoon title acquired by someone else (Taiwan Tohan to be exact; known for its niched titles). |

... Ha. Turns out my home town of melbourne holds about one percent of the world's first-world native-english-speaking population. 3k worldwide equals thirty people here, which is about one and a half times what I'd guess [I figure I know most of them]. So yes. |

Admittedly I don't have any experience on which to base this opinion, but I think the number would have to be higher than 3k per volume per press in terms of global sales, due to costs associated with distribution. Just a guess, though. |

| they're making a good move in my eyes with their distribution plan. hard to get any better than that! | ||||

Why don't you just tell Madman to shut themselves down since you can import everything from other English-speaking countries, particularly USA? International licenses don't work that way. It's not enough finding fans who just like the series; you have to find enough fans |

At the Dark Horse panel at AX in... 2006, I think it was, someone asked about YKK and we got an interesting response as in: "Yes, many of us have looked into that one, but sometimes there are complicated reasons for not being able to release things, since the original author has control over whether their work can be translated into some languages." which would indicate to me that the manga-ka doesn't want it distributed in the US for some reason. I have no hard evidence for it, but I am pretty sure there's no other manga that is as well respected as YKK in the english speaking community (except perhaps for Yotsuba-to). Heck, just look at the review numbers for it in the encyclopedia:http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=3605 it's number 3, slightly edging out Nausicaa! Even if there might not be that many people who have heard of it, a title this good would be given a chance by some company, I think, unless there were other circumstances preventing it - which I'm afraid might be the case here. |
