I don't buy merchandise. Figures and models don't come cheap (to my knowledge), but more importantly a plastic anime figure will at most bear the likeness of their character, but not any of the other important properties for which I came to like them.
Their personality, dialogue, actions and fate are aspects as important as, if not more important than, their appearance, yet any official products other than the DVDs/manga/visual novels (etc) cannot in general bear these elements of the character's essence. I'd much rather spend my money on that in which such an essence is fully contained (the DVDs) than that which only looks like the character at a single point in time.
I don't intend to attack those who enjoy collecting anime figurines- they do look nice on a shelf. Besides their decorative effect however, I feel I needn't buy them if I can fully "own" the characters on DVD.

I'll agree, whenever someone brings up the phrase "true fan" in any discussion I instantly get irritable. My roommate is a big wrestling fan and proclaims every Monday night that "true" wrestling fans:

1. Hate John Cena.

2. Love Randy Orton.

3. Think that anyone who doesn't fall into the above two categories is either a kid--who loves Cena and therefore is "destroying" wrestling by making him so popular--or a female who has a crush on Cena.

ok. well, i'm a big fullmetal alchemist fan, just to get that out of the way. however, i love the manga much more than the anime mostly for one crucial reason: the ending FAILED.

my ending: Mustang burns Eckhart to a crisp, then gets together with Hawkeye. Then, Al puts part of his soul into a suit of armor, they get Noah, come back to Amestris but leave the armor, the armor destroys the gate on Germany's side, and they destroy it on Amestris's side. Ed and Winry can get together (i'm such a canon shipper TAnime cryT) and it all works out. oh, and Mustang gets back his position of Brigadier General. or maybe gets elected fuhrer (sp?).

*phew* hope that was less than 600...

As for rewriting an anime ending i'll do grave of the fireflies spoiler[Seita would live through the ending, and we'd see him grow older and remebering his family and previous life. I'd like to see him maybe Oprah/Night it and walk through where he suffered and show his kids so they remember, but not with hate or malice, but with the same tone the movie ended with- without placing blame.]

I have to admit that I don't see how you can see Grave of the Fireflies as not being very much a part of the 'victim's history' that permeates a lot of historical and quas-historical anime--and those 'victim's histories' are very much placing blame--on America.

If I had to rewrite any anime ending...I'm not sure I would actually do it. The only shows that I have seen from beginning to end are X, Fullmetal Alchemist, s-CRY-ed, and Samurai Champloo, and I think they all ended very well considering what they were. I mean, of course you like closure, but I wouldn't rewrite any of them. I think I might change a little bit about s-CRY-ed though.

spoiler[I happen to think that the ending was a little too bizarre, and that instead of ending at their fight going on however long later--at least some hope of some sort of resolution. But then again, it really lends to the hopelessness of the whole show, doesn't it?]

Because Seita, through his arrogance/selfishness/misplaced pride, engineers his own misfortune; he's in a fairly bad situation [like everyone else], but his choices make it worse, for him and for others.

Seita's relationship to the rest of japan thus mirrors prewar japan's relationship to the rest of the world, with much the same outcomes.

Which you lose, if you play too much with the ending.

Kinda sounds to me like you want the super-happy ending. Full Metal Alchemist may not have given you all of the satisfying things that would make fans happy (spoiler[like certain characters getting together], but that doesn't make it a bad ending. I actually think that makes the ending more powerful.

Wasn't the ending of the series actually shown in the movie?

Modern entertainment is the new age religion 'opium for the masses', much like the old one but operating on reversed concepts. Its just the human nature and I have nothing against it.

True fans?! I think its usually quite the opposite the more 'hardcore' you are the more you become radical instead of impose. People who developed a deeper understanding on the subject will also develop more refined method of consumption. This is not a statement against our interest in collection (dvds or figures or whatever), people devoted to the subject accumulates what they thought valuable and proud to display them, because its what valuable to them not some random things.

No shame for being a nerd, in fact I am proud of it. Because nerds are the once whom created the world and remembered in history where the crowd fad away and forgotten.

I feels like '2xp0wd', do you?

It rather depends what kind of animated shows from Japan you like to watch. There are the shows specifically targetting dedicated fans or youngsters who are willing to pay a lot and there are the other tv series and movies, that have more in common with international animation and are closer to the tastes of Western viewers. I mean the Japanese watch Western animation too.

I don't think it is elitist to dismiss the former and prefer the latter if it doesnt end up in arguing. But you have to admitt that advertisements and the hype usually add to the product much more flavour than it deserves, overshadowing other underrated gems. I don't watch animation from Japan in this way anymore.

I belong to the older fans anyway where in order to be an anime fan you had to watch Heidi and Marco.

Couldn't agree more with what Zac said about leeches who don't support the industry. People can scream about their love of anime from the rooftops, but if they refuse to watch their anime through legal means then it's just BS. Period.

I've had a couple of people give me strange looks when I've told them I can't stand mecha shows. Hate 'em. They just bore me to bloody death.

Hahaha... I was reading the newspaper today, an article about all the big-screen adaptations of anime that are in the works, and there was a quote from Zac in there. Awesome! Way to become a figurehead, Mr. Bertschy. Very Happy

I wasn't criticizing the ending at all, I think it loses a lot of its emotional power without that (and it is a movie that is very dependent on its emotional power) but that is an awesome reading of the historical analogy present in the movie. Smile

I'm a proud Naruto fan, I dare say it's the greatest show ever. Only a fool would deny that! /sarcasm
You know, on a lot of sites, all the best series people could ever think of are Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha, Dragon Ball... This is a community where if you don't try to be elitist, nobody will even try to listen to you. We all have to miss some great shows every now and then, but it's really difficult to connect with someone who has only watched anime on TV, they can't talk about any series but Shonen Jump ones but just keep going on about how good they are. Most of the time I become so hot-headed that I have to invoke the power of elitism, just to remind them there are tons of better, WAY better shows out there. Rolling Eyes Sorry but I don't have to watch all of your 1,000000+ DBZ/Naruto episodes in order to be considered one of your fellow anime fans (1 hour of 5cm/s and 26 eps of Mushi-shi clearly knock your beloved series into a cocked hat). Somewhere along the way I realized how hard it is to find a friend who knows my favorite series, let alone likes them, so I hardly ever mention anime in real life, instead I visit forums like an*ki where I can actually find someone sharing the same interest.

You know what drives me crazy? People like you who dismiss people who watch their anime on cable (OMG!!!) or who watch Shonen Jump shows. Let people enjoy what they like, because you aren't going to make any friends by blowing people off and essentially, insulting MY intelligence and MY taste.
I don't really care what you think of my tastes, or my enjoyment of things like s-CRY-ed, Fullmetal Alchemist, X, Bleach, or Death Note...Rolling Eyes I'm sorry if that's too 'mainstream' and not 'hip' enough for you.
God, this is the problem with everything too. People make fun of you if you read Harry Potter or watch Gossip Girl because somehow that makes you a terrible person Rolling Eyes. I'm sorry I never watched Arrested Development.

...But back to anime. Ummmm I may well like things like Kamichu and The Place Promised in Our Early Days...but it doesn't have to go against my adoration of Bleach Smile.

Think whatever you want, I ain't insulting your intelligence or your taste (and read this before charging in like an enraged Narutard and making a fool of yourself), as long as you understand there are better series other than those you see on TV. Then again, I must ask if you've checked them out. If no, still fine, just don't scream out loud that Bleach is the greatest series in the world or keep going on about its awesomeness just because you haven't seen anything more awesome (while enjoying it is totally fine, get it?). If yes, I believe we understand each other.
