(Note: I'm starting this thread by moderator permission, this does not mean visual novels are allowed to be discussed here. This is just a thread to test the waters).

Just for general info, I'm going to transcribe the basic plot from the instruction booklet for the game. I'd link to Wiki, but for some reason the page has massive spoilers with no warning whatsoever. I don't recommend looking there.

Quote:
It is May 1, 12:51 p.m.

Seven people find themselves trapped without warning in the marine theme park LeMU, 167 feet underwater. Water, air and food are in short supply, and worse yet, a mysterious virus lurks deep in the ocean. The park is relentlessly assaulted by water pressure, and the protective bulkhead will collapse in the next 119 hours.

Time is limited for the people trapped in LeMU. As they fight to escape, the bonds between them grow stronger - bonds of friendship, and bonds of love. But time waits for no one, and your time is close to running out. With an ending that packs the ultimate in surprises, what will happen to you? What will you gain when you finally discover the secret of LeMU? And what will you lose?

... And that's probably the best grammar you'll get out of this game (The game is understandable, but be prepared for a lot of typos and grammar errors in this one...).

The game is available in English, but the company that released it went out of business. So it's out of stock in many places. If all else fails you can try Amazon.

The game is a visual novel. You make choices throughout the story which affects which ending you get. The game branches out as you either playing as the Kid, or Takeshi. Each of them have 2 different "good" endings corresponding to each girl (You, Sara, Tsugumi, and Sora). Completing all four of these endings unlocks the final "true" ending. If you start playing it and getting into it, I highly recommend playing until you get the final ending. It is probably the reason why this game is considered to be one of the best, if not the best visual novel available in English. It is really that good. Not to say the rest of the game isn't excellent. There was a few times I ending up shedding tears throughout the game spoiler[Tsugumi's ending anyone?] It was just that the final ending absolutely blew me away.

As far as the theme of the game, it is kind of a mystery/adventure/drama with some romance. The game is supposed to take 119 hours to complete. Depending on how fast you read, it will most likely take you 60-100 hours (personally it probably took me around 90, I'm not a speed reader). So ya, the game is pretty long. Also, in case you were wondering the game is non-hentai. There is blood in it, but no pornographic scenes or nudity.

Obviously, the story is the prime focus of this game (which it does exceedingly well in). The music is good, but nothing extraordinary. It just fits the scenes in which it plays well. I like the opening theme a lot. The ending theme (the true ending) is kind of odd at first, but I listened to it a few times and it grew on me. The artwork and CGs are very nice. They character designs typical anime style. Uh, looking at it now... I suppose there's not too much above average in any department other than story. But then again it's mainly a book with multiple choices throughout. Actually, thinking about it, the concept is very similar to those multiple choice Goosebumps books that were popular a while back...

Now for a question I have for anybody who has played the game. I have completed all the scenes, endings, paths in the game but am only at 113% complete (1% off). I'm just missing one wallpaper. Any idea to what I may be missing? If there's something that's commonly missed or anything... Screen shots if it will help (the pics don't contain any spoilers).

According to sources I'm apparently supposed to get all 126 scenes and complete the game again for this picture. Obviously that didn't work.

Hmm it's probably best to go to this board since they are the only major VN board around:

http://forums.novelnews.net/

It's great that some people are enjoying VN but VN is still a very small and unknown part that even anime fans don't know about =(

I have the game too and downloaded the patch before the site went down. I have been too busy to start playing it but I will get to it eventually.

Ya, Anime Suki has a very large Ever 17 thread. But I just wanted to see if I could get any discussion of it going on here. Apparently not popular enough... Which is a huge shame, since it really deserves more popularity.

O really? Didn't know anime suki cared about VNs Anime hyper But yea, it's sad that the current VN scene is pretty unknown. The stories are great and the experience is unique. I talked to anime fans and when I mentioned VNs, they don't even know what it is.

I created a disk full of VNs for my co-workers that are anime fans at work that I mentioned in this post: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=55832

but none of them read it yet, lol.

You should look up the free legal ones that I mentioned in that thread and try to look up Tsukihime while you are at it. I suggest the non-ero patch if you ever decide to buy it then patch the game.

Yes, I don't think the VN scene is ever going to take off in the US like it has in Japan. Companies like Hirameki gave it a nice try though. I think it would have a chance if anybody would license something popular (like say Fate/stay Night or Air), but that would be a huge gamble with the (apparently very expensive) cost of licensing and I don't think any company is willing to risk it. I also know that there are some Japanese companies wanting to bring VNs over here but they can't find any company willing to take the risk of licensing them.

Is there something wrong with the ero patch? Because I prefer it with the ero scenes (yes, pervert, etc.). Although I've already played some it.

Ever17, Inferno, and Hourglass of Summer were at least more than average VN but didn't sell well regardless. Inferno sold the most too. One biggest problem was that only the, I don't how to say it, but the most hardcore/underground people knew about VNs. Even people I knew people that love anime and manga but knew nothing about VN O.o. In fact Ever17 was torrented more than bought because of the hype of the game. For a small company like Hirameki, it hurt them a lot.

I would love to have Air, Tsukihime, etc here too but unfortunately from what I understand, cost too much to license. I also don't know many people that are willing to sit in front of a monitor for that long unless it's a FPS or RTS, lol. Things will have to change for those ideals about reading on a computer to change.

As for Tsukihime, I read through the game with ero scenes first and I found that they didn't add anything to the story. IMO it hurt the story a little because it wasn't written well and was awkward on how and what was happening. =P Anyways it's up to the user to decide if they want something like that in VN or not.

This is bad news. I don't remember if I got the patch or not. Is there a way to tell if you have it installed?

I have only completed two or three endings. I purchased Ever 17 when the news came out about HIRAMEKI INTERNATIONAL. It is not bad at all. I like it better than the Ai Yori Aoshi game.

Hmm I think you can play the game without the patch with no problems but I dunno. The patch just replaces the voices files to fix something so the file is like 400 something MB x.X

The patch might be somewhere if you google it.

*edit:

Look here for more info about the patch. It fixes voices for versions that has problems.

I'd discuss but I haven't played the game yet. Once I've have, and if I remember this thread, I'd be happy to discuss Ever 17 with you.

If it were the all ages versions, I would pick them up in a heartbeat if they were brought over. Frankly, I'm more interested in getting the Galaxy Angel games over here. Their is the manga but that only gives you Milfuelle's track, and while I like her well enough, I'd much prefer to win the affections of Vanilla. Although, I'd play through all the girls tracks.

Ever 17 is one of the many, many games (and few visual novels) I'd like to get around to playing someday. I'll be happy to discuss it once I actually play it... should be around 2015 or so...

Thanks! I got the patches now. They were for Ever 17, Animamundi and Ai Yori Aoshi. I am not sure I need them, but I will keep them just in case. It looks like this is a site that I need to bookmark as well...

I also need to add that while I did enjoy Ever 17 better than Ai Yori Aoshi, I thought the voices used in Ai Yori Aoshi were top notch. Were these the voice actors that were used in the anime?

So now that Hirameki is not around, what other companies put out VNs that are good?

Yes, they were all the same.

There are companies that are putting out pornographic visual novels. The large majority of the ones that are out aren't that great though...

Oh man, you just sold me on this game. I love visual novel anime adaptations and I've been considering buying this to see what actual visual novels are like, but I just needed that little something extra. The sale price on RightStuf was a start, but not enough. I had no idea though that the game had little completion goals where it keeps track of how many endings you've done, and other little sub-goals. I'm a completist by nature so anything that encourages that habit is something I'm bound to enjoy. I'll be sure to add this on to my next TRSI order.

Yeah a lot of VNs has triggers and counters that keeps track of what you do so everytime you play it, a new path might open. Sometimes games like Pieces of Wonder, another Hirameki title, have RPG battles in between of story.

PoW is a bit short and a generic harem title. I beat it and enjoy it so it's worth the $15 something for it.
