Yeah, I was about to point out Zac, that indeed the worst offenders of signing their posts are tempest (who I'm guessing your talking about) and abunai (who is also a mod, at least). Is abunai an admin or not...?

Yes, I do it all the time (though I incorporate a P.S. of sorts into about half of my posts, so the "signature" is often more of a stylistic quirk, signifying "here comes an afterthought or wry remark"). When I joined ANN, there was no hard rule against signatures -- it was deprecated, but not yet forbidden. The no-sigs rule was not originally intended to ban all signatures, but rather to limit the massive blocks of graphic awfulness that people litter their posts with -- same as the rule that limits avatar size. Back then, nobody kvetched about my 8 bytes of signature, when the real problem was 32K of poorly animated crap-GIF.

Hell, even after 3000+ posts, I've yet to use up the total bandwidth that ONE of those crappy GIFs used. Think about that.

I consider my "signature" to be acceptable because it was "grandfathered in", but I am well aware that it is double-standard-ish for me to admonish others for violating a rule that I bend all the time myself...which is why I don't do it. I'm the only mod who doesn't enforce that rule. Stones and glass houses, y'know.

After reading that rant against Dominick Deegan and then a few DD comics I decided it was time to send my first piece of hate mail (barring eBay related conflict). Jesus Christ that comic is possibly one of the worst things I've ever seen. The level of terribleness is striking but it's mostly the fact that in 6 years of production it has not improved even slightly. Both in art and dialogue it's still the same low-quality 12 year-old sketchy animu drawing and a messy patchwork of dialogue stolen from Saturday morning cartoons, fortune cookies, and Christmas cracker puns. And the alliteration, dear lord! the alliteration. I fear that this is too off-topic to keep writing about though.

Oh, come on! Dominic Deegan is fun. It's not like it pretends to be great art -- but it's a damn sight more entertaining than most webcomics (and plenty of print comics, too, dear God). I won't say it's my favourite webcomic (that honour goes to either Girl Genius or Gunnerkrigg Court), but I read it regularly, and always enjoy myself. What more can one ask of entertainment, than that it be entertaining?

See, here's that wry remark thingy....

And I can go to bed at a decent time with anime, but WoW can keep me up til 3.

I couldn't stop watching NGE when a friend lent me the box set. I spent all night and into the morning watching the first 18 episodes, crashed, woke up, and finished the series and movies. That was a weird two days.

S'why we don't see fan favorite Steve Blum / David Lucas much.

I understand it's hard to get them in the same room. Laughing

I *very* nearly had him convinced to appear in costume as "David Lucas".... David Lucas would only appear behind a screen or mask. Smile

Sadly Mr Lucas had other commitments and couldn't appear.

Although I think I admire the writing more than the character itself, Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist always struck me as a great character. Not so much because he had a particularly magnetic personality, but because his character arc was very deftly handled and delt with some surprisingly complicated and adult issues. His story was compelling and sophisticated to a degree, and that made him probably the most interesting character on the show.

I swear, whenever I hear people talk about "depth" being more important than likability, it always sounds to me like they're trying to come across as sophisticated and failing miserably.

Regardless of how "deep" a story's characters are, if none of them are likable, then I can't bring myself to grow attached and, in the case of most stories and especially longer ones, the story tends to be garbage as a result. Lain suffered from that. If I cared about any of them, then it was because they irritated me. As a result, I couldn't bring myself to enjoy the show because I either hated or didn't care about the characters involved. Character depth is just a tool to an end, that end being getting the audience to care in some way or another. Likability is more important in getting the audience to grow attached.

Not that Roy Mustang isn't awesome. He's my favorite FMA character. "You can call me Roy Mustang. Or just lieutenant colonel. Hell, you can call me the Flame Alchemist. Whatever you do, remember the pain."

I've been an anime fan for almost 20 years. Been watching since I was about 5 years old (but in the last 12 years I have been even more into it). I have suffered from anime burnout a few times. Sometimes you just have to sit back and wait for something to really catch your eye. Usually I get burnout when i've watched too many drama animes and not any comedies for awhile. A healthy mix of different types of animes certainly help to keep things going. Sometimes I stopped watching anime for some time and focused on reading manga. Sadly there are so many wonderful manga that will probably never become anime, actually that's probably a good thing.

Wildarmsheero? That Wildarmsheero? Well I knew he was a huge lolicon but I didn't know he had a web comic (although I've heard of this web comic, I just didn't know he made it). His comic is actually pretty funny looking at a few of the strips. I'm not really much into web comics though.

Heh, I guess that explains zac's comment about the writer hating his guts.
I knew I'd heard of that name from somewhere. Good Lord he did get my blood up. Confused

I wonder if he drew this one after that thread? Laughing

Now "Errant Story" looks interesting, and for an OEL, its style is better than some Japanese manga I've seen as well. Shame it's only a web comic.

I had the same thought!! Razz "Mistakes of Youth" and, more especially wildarmsheero, filled me with great irritation. He's the kind of person you hope never to meet in real life. Mad

Um, KZK, yeah, I guess Michael Poe is good, but here are a few other names: Kaori Yuki, Kouyu Shurei, Nobuhiro Watsuki, Setona Mizushiro, even freaking Yasuhiro Nightow are all better artists than Micheal Poe IMHO. Most of them are fantasy manga-ka too, to varying degrees.
