I really agree with what you said about Angel's Egg. I read so many good things about it that I decided to watch it, but when I did, I felt like I needed to be high just to understand it. I actually watched the thing in 2 parts - I had to take a nap in between Laughing

I also agree with what you said about Cowboy Bebop and Mushi-shi. Both are very good series, and I gave both high scores, but there were parts that really made me sleepy.

Confessions:

I liked Shuffle! Laughing I thought it was funny, and the character design is very good. The story wasn't much, but it really entertained me. It made me consider ecchi series, that I didn't want to watch (in fact, I hated ecchi before Shuffle!), before I saw Shuffle. Thinking of creating a Shuffle! cosplay group for a future con.

I like Shinji Laughing Everyone seems to hate him, but I feel for him. My main argument when I have to defend him is that, if you were a 14 year old kid and you were forced to save the world without warning, you'd be emo too Laughing

I agree with Answerman on Pom Poko. I was counting down the minutes till it was over. When it finally ended I went into an euphoric state.

I've only seen 2 Miyazaki movies ("Nausicaa" and "Princess Mononoke") and 1 Oshii movie ("Ghost in the Shell"), but I'd say they are overrated. I don't remember seeing anything by Rumiko Takahashi so no comment there.

Quote:
I stand by my concept that Castlevania would make a great anime series that could probably run forever.

I can't believe I never thought of that! It probably shoudn't go on forever, but if a good studio did it that would be pretty awesome.

Confessions (strictly anime/manga related):
- I can honestly say that I have liked or loved every incarnation of "Evangelion" I've seen so far (even "Angelic Days" isn't so bad now that I'm giving it a second chance).
- Aside from the "Daicon" shorts and 2 (illegal) episodes of "Gunbuster", I haven't seen anything from GAINAX's "Pre-Eva" days despite considering myself a fan of theirs and the fact that most of these are considered classics.
- I think "7" and "Zero" are good entries in the "Macross" franchise.
- I think I've liked every Game-to-Anime conversion I've seen so far (not far enough on "FF:U" to tell one way or the other).
- Based on what I've heard so far, I'd say Yoko Kanno is pretty overrated (but "SAC" had just barely enough good music to get the soundtracks, and her work on "Macross F" is awesome).
- I think "Stand Alone Complex" might be the best version of "Ghost in the Shell", being more interesting than Oshii's movie and easier to understand than Shirow's manga.

And that's all I can think of at the moment.

-Gundam SEED is overrated. It's not awful, but it's not really good.

-I still like Gundam Wing, and I like G and Turn-A, but I still prefer good old UC gundams.

-I have yet to actually finish the original Mobile Suit Gundam tv series (thank god for the compilation trilogy).

-I absolutely love Yakitate!! Japan and think the Food Network should pick it up.

-GaoGaiGar made me cry at the end.

-The original GitS was kind of boring, but not near as much as Innocence. I fell asleep during both.

-I just couldn't get myself inot Lucky Star, but Anime Tenchou is pretty cool.

-I liked Chobits all the way until the ending.

-I actually liked Bleach up until after the Soul Society arc, when finding out spoiler[Ichigo's dad was a shinigami] basically made me lose interest.

Pretty good column this week, especially the anecdotes with "that guy" encounters. Luckily, I haven't met "that guy" yet.

I very much agree with Zac on Rumiko Takahashi. I love Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, but by the time I was halfway through the first volume of Inuyasha, I was asking myself why the heck I bought it; it just bored and irritated me. Though Ranma 1/2 looks like a cute series. I've read a little bit of it and it was funny, but it definitely looks like the kind of humor that'll get old and recycled quickly. I'll probably just buy a couple volumes of it and maybe some towards the end of the series. If anything confuses me, I'll read up on it.

As for what she'll do next, that question'll be answered eventually. The Inuyasha manga's gonna end next week. I hope she'll create a series that's different and probably a little more like MI.

As for confessions:

- I actually like Yu-Gi-Oh!, but only to the end of the Battle City Tournament Saga, the rest of it I can't stand. It's always hard for me to admit this because folks at my school always make fun of it.

- I used to own a Naruto wallscroll. I have no idea how it ended up in my possession, because I never liked the series in the first place. Where I got it still remains a mystery to me to this day.

- I can't, a probably will never make sense of FLCL, Excel Saga, or Evangelion. All of them look good, but I have no idea what's going on when I try watching them.

- I find Lucky Star overrated. Something put me off about it, but I don't know what. I'll give Haruhi a chance at some point, though.

I think that's about it. I'm not one to keep many secrets.

Confessions:

1. I thought that 4kids' adaptation of Ojamajo Doremi (Magical Doremi) was pretty good, considering the intended audience.

2. I sold my collection of anime fansubs I had on CD-r's to a guy (over 1000 CD-Rs...) for $50. We actually did the exchange in a parking garage like it was some drug deal by handing over a suitcase. Circa 1998-2003

3. The real reason I started learning Japanese was because I wanted to be able to play a rom of Final Fantasy Tactics advanced before it was released in the US. Suffice it to say I didn't make it in time.

4. I marathoned Ruroni Kenshi. All of it. In one sitting (about 1.5 days) And they were real media rips of VHS fansubs of such poor quality that 50% of the subs were unreadable. And I didn't even think the series was that good.

5. I think the Japanese voice for Goku sounds extremely weird.

6. Shoujo manga makes me cry.

As for all the Talkback here about Miyazaki, do keep in mind his films are primarily for children. That doesn't make them any worse or any better than they would be otherwise, of course, but I'm guessing most of you are not in his target age demographic. I've never seen a child not get entirely entranced by the likes of My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away ....

As most of anime is. Or teenagers at least. Anime for adults in Japan are only in the late night zone and are watched by a dedicated few who'd prefer to buy the DVD.

In order not to generalize the term "for chidren" I'll just say that I'd prefer the works of Ghibili than watch Digimon. Same with the term "children's literature". That does not deter anyone from reading Dickens, Twain or works such as "The Yearling" and "Little Prince".

Consider his works rather something for adults but narrated through a childs perspective.

Now to the main topic:

I find Miyazaki overrated too, not in a sense that his work does not deserve attention but because he overshadows all the other artists, to some of which he owns a lot.

The main reason is that especially in the English speaking countries he became known mostly through Studio Ghibili, while his career goes even further than that.

A sad thing is that none of the Nippon Animation titles of the 70s were broadcasted in the States and even today with the fansubs and the easier means of distribution they're largely ignored. Some of these titles clearly show where Miyazaki was influenced.

Namely from directors such as Isao Takahata and animators such as Yoichi Kotabe, Yasuji Mori etc

At least some of the Toei movies of the 60s/70s were broadcasted.

To really put Miyazaki in the correct context you have to watch at least those titles or else you feel as if he suddenly turned into god through Nausicaa.

But who's in the mood to watch oldies since now I hear statements of the like "I don't watch pre-2000 anime because I don't like the design"

Personally I too prefer the direction of Isao Takahata.

My confessions that sum it up:

I prefer hand-drawn animated series to computer animated series and can't stand the modern trend in anime at all (with very few exceptions). Despite the hype they all look the same.

Its good to realise that some of the "That guy"s are socially internet raised. I actually do know a few semi-that guys who might act like a that guy in a larger group, but might act normal on their own.

But Confessions are fun!
1) I didn't care for Escaflowne. Actually, I hate that whole fantasy genre, I prefer that for videogames.
2) I find Yokko Kano overrated in all except the Cowboy Bebop opening
3) I do not like Miyazaki movies. Despite my hatred, I don't go purposly trolling either, its a waste of my time and everyone would just yell at me and probably not read my arguments anyway. If someone asks me my opinion of Miyazaki movies, I'll certainly tell them though.
4) I have never been to Otakon despite living within a 100 mile radius of it for over 5 years now. I havn't been to any other conventions either.
5) I love Akira Toriyama's artwork. He is my favorite character designer ever. This might have something to do with the Dragon Quest games (my favourite traditional RPG series), but its a bit more than that too, I just like his style.
6) I did not like FLCL and I found Excel Saga to be very slow and uninteresting. I liked Super Milk-chan though. Not adored, but enjoyed quite well.

When it comes to Hayao Miyazaki, my favourite film of his is easily Kiki's Delivery Service, with My Neighbor Totoro being a fairly close second (with Whisper of the Heart, which almost semi-counts, being my second favourite Ghibli film), Porco Rosso being a distant third, and everything else being fourth, with me not giving enough of a damn to even rank them, not counting Castle of Cagliostro, which I haven't seen since around 1995. There's plenty I admire about Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, but it's almost entirely on the technical side of animation. As stories, they just do too little for me.

Kiki's Delivery Service is a relatively simple, down-to-earth, focused coming of age tale of a girl learning to be independent in a strange town, and dealing with boredom, disappointment, and loss of confidence in herself. The only thing fantastical about it is the magic, obviously, but you could take that one element and re-write it as some other talent, and the story would be just as strong. I know it's not nearly as "layered" a story as Spirited Away, but it's just one of the many cases where a straightforward story "clicks" with me and a highly-praised, textured film with a lot of mysteries that are wide open for interpretation doesn't "click". I guess, on some deep personal level, I can relate to Kiki but not Chihiro; it's probably that simple.

You know you won't be able to print all the one's you will get, so think of these as the "fansubbed" version. BTW the Vatican has ratified changing the rite of confession into the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and it's a Sacrament you need to be blessed with for that list me thinks. Wink

Wait, so it's not a "confessional" anymore, but a "Reconciliational"? That name's just stupid!
You reconcile you finances, you confess your sins.
Makes me glad I'm not catholic. Or christian. Or a practicing jew.

Haha Zac, look what you did, make one statement about never seeing anime fans say anything bad about Miyazaki, and suddenly the flood gates open. I too, feel that Miyazaki is overrated. I can see why other people like his movies, but they're not my cup of tea.
However, I have to say that I liked Whisper of the Heart, so that would have to be my favourite Miyazki anime. Unless we can count the Anne of Green Gables anime. He didn't direct it, but he was involved in it, and, well, Anne is just so damn loveable.

I can't think of anything weird that I have to confess regarding my anime (other than my bad habit of buying entire series sight unseen, and then never watching them) but I have to agree with you 100% on Escaflowne being one of the best anime I've ever seen, and loving both endings of Evangelion. However, I love the End of Evangelion more, that movie managed to be really beautiful, but disturbing at the same time.

Quote:
There is no reason at all Ghost in the Shell: Innocence was more or less 2 hours of Batou and Togusa wandering around quoting scripture against pretty backgrounds with 5 minute action sequence near the end that actually features the franchise's main character. To top it off, he fills the movie with self-indulgent references to his basset hound.

I could try to argue against that by saying how the main themes were intentionally presented through the visuals, the quoting may well have been just game played by the characters to test one another's external memory and the lack of the Major was a means to distinguish the sequel from the original. But I fear doing such would be intellecutal masturbation, so I'll refrain.

Quote:
(Miyazaki) is so revered that I don't think I've even seen attention-hungry trolls try to argue that his movies aren't good. And these days, that's something!

I'm certain I'm not the only one who's confessed their dislike for Miyazaki's films, but I'm undecided as to whether or not I'm an attention-hungry troll though.

Quote:
Pom Poko sucks. A lot. It's unwatchable.

At last something I agree with. I haven't seen anything worse than it so far.
