The only reason I enjoy Deathnote is because I think its so dumb its funny.

Yeah it's weird, I find my self watching it for the same reason. Maybe not over the top funny (and I'd still say it has great performances and animation). Hell I was even spoiled about the ending and a couple of the big turning points. But I just want to see how it leads there and just how are some of these idiotic and shallow characters going to act.

The closest account of "that guy" that I can recall (honestly, when I read the question last week I was a bit confused and felt I was missing something) was a guy who hanged out in our little makeshift Anime and Gaming club back in HS and he'd always make up a ton of crap stating the infamous "My <relative> works for <company> so he knows these secrets for <title>" He was a nice guy, he let me borrow a ton of cool stuff like his modded PS1, and Super Smash Brothers for the N64. But he never admitted he was wrong or that he was BS'ing

Okay, my confessions:

-Episodes 35-37 of One Piece hit me SO DAMN HARD, not only was I a OP fan for life, I cried over something I watched which I haven't done since I watched The Lion King in theaters when I was 10 (and even that feels minor in comparison). Since then I still cry from watching a lot of those heart wrenching scenes EVERY TIME, and I feel like I've gotten sappier because of it, I feel myself getting teary eyed on MORE occasions.

-Even though my mom, sister, and I originally panned Lupin III (when airing on AS) for it's badly aged animation, I later developed a respected fondness of it. I want to watch some of movies especially since they look great, just haven't gotten around to it.

-Hare (From Hare and Guu) and Light Yagami (from Death Note) are tied in my book for the worst ever protagonist in an Anime.

-I don't think Japanese DBZ is all cracked up to be especially with Music and Voices. The music fits fine with the original Dragonball, but I find it just doesn't fit with the grittier sequel. Bruce Falconer > Shunsuke Kikuchi

-I was an embarrassingly huge fan of Sailor Moon back in the classic Toonami days. And speaking of which...

-Rei and Mina (from SM) along with Kasumi Tendo from Ranma 1/2 were my first "Anime crushes"

I have a few anime confessions of my own.

Princess Mononoke is the one movie by Miyazaki I don't like.

Three-fourths of the episodes of Cowboy Bebop were boring and/or incredibly cliched. But by all accounts, the movie is awesome.

I hate Slayers with the combined fury of a thousand suns.

I also hate Fruits Basket with the combined fury of a thousand suns.

I dislike FLCL, except for the music. Music's cool. Nothing else is, though.

I really despise Code Geass, and I think the character designs are ugly as sin. Which is strange, because I like some of the designs in older CLAMP works.

And now, my favorite movie by Miyazaki: that would have to be none other than Castle in the Sky. It's my favorite anime film of all time, and one of the few movies I've ever seen that I would describe with one word; magical. That movie is magical. Maybe not for you, but it's magical to me.

Wyvern wrote:
While I'm not going to argue about the relative quality of Bebop episodes (everyone has their favorite) Ed is not a pointless character. She's vital to the show's dynamic.

Why? Because she does three things that are very important:

spoiler[1-She provides a contrast to the three other main characters' jaded, world-weary natures. And by doing so, she highlights them. You understand Spike, Jet and Faye better when you realizes how unlike Ed they are. She's full of wonder and life and happiness, and everyone else is various degrees of defeated by life. Plus, in "My Funny Valentine," we learn how LIKE Ed Faye used to be, which just makes the scene where she sees her past self more poigant, because she knows she can't be like that anymore. She's lived too much. She's trapped in adulthood, while Ed embodies all the best traits of childhood ramped up to eleven.

Ed is a walking reminder of the innocent past the other three can't go back to.

2-Ed forces Spike to be grounded. Spike complains about each new character as they are introduced, but he clearly is fond of each of them and cares about them. But Ed's arrival is important because it forces a level of stability on him. If the Bebop crew are a family unit, Ed is the "kid," and a kid is what usually forces stability on a family. Having Ed around really forces Spike to have someone to look after, because Ed is the only member who can't defend herself in a fight. It forces Spike to put his self-destructiveness on hold because he has someone to look out for. He cares about Jet and Faye, too, but Ed is the only one he feels responsible toward, because the "eh, I'll just leave, they can take care of themselves" excuse doesn't work for her. What's the first thing Spike does after Ed leaves? He goes and gets himself killed. ]

At the terrible risk of derailing this thread…

Your first point is compelling, but when did Spike ever show any affection or even attention to Ed? It’s Jet who ends up as her father surrogate. Also, spoiler[ It’s Julia’s death that sends Spike out on his suicide mission, not Ed’s departure.]

I still really love season three of Digimon. God help me, I do. Very Happy The rest of the seasons are stupid, but for whatever reason I revisited the show three years after five years after first watching it once my sister got attached and it's still fun. At some points, it's even well-written. But this has never elicited anything but giggles from other people.

Are you kidding? I love Digimon Tamers. Absolutely the best kiddie action cartoon I’ve ever seen. Its nearly total refusal to follow formula and convention and the depth of its character development are…awesome! The movies were terrible! Wow!

I sent my confession in via email, but since everyone is opening up here:

1. Fullmetal Alchemist is just shounen with angst, genocide and implied gang rape.

2. Eureka Seven lacks direction and coherence and I can't stand it.

3. Otaku are bad for the anime industry because they only want the same things over and over again.

4. I don't really like Miyazaki's films all that much.

5. Kodomo no Jikan is one of the most emotionally genuine series in a while.

6. Welcome to the NHK turns into crappy soap-opera really quickly.

7. Gundam needs to stop, at least for a while.

8. If the American animation industry had the breadth and diversity of genre and audience that anime has, it'd wipe the floor with Japan.

9. Death Note is only good for about 14 episodes and even then it's purely an exercise in vigorous plotting and lacks substance.

10. 4kids' version of Ojamajo Doremi is pretty good.

11. Anime idiosyncrasies like sweatdrops and bulging veins are artistically lazy ways to express emotion.

12. Dragonball Z is lots of fun in small doses.

13. The Azumanga Daioh anime was a poor adaptation of the manga.

Confessions:

*I'm ok with fanservice manga and anime, as long as it's not just about the fanservice. Hence why I'm currently reading Inubaka and Kurohime, and why I collected Pretty Face. [I don't consider Oh! My Goddess to be fanservice-oriented.] I'm still uncertain whether I'll continue with Video Girl Ai, though, since Katsura tends to take himself a bit too seriously.

*I liked Disney movies up until The Lion King. [Though I'm not fond of Oliver & Co.]

*Megazone 23 and Bubblegum Crisis are not original nor the best the genre had to offer in the 80s.

I like Inuyasha, I found the scences in the show to be very peaceful and let be honest with ourselves here, the story is not bad either. As for you Zac, you said the creator of Inuyasha should stop doing the same theme over and over because it boring and don't let you started on Inuyasha, well if that is the case then why don't you stop being a hyprocrite and start put up pictures of something else instead of animals everyweek. Looking at animals everyweek make me sick and don't make me started on telling people how I feel about hyprocrite. By the way, I'm 100% disagree with you on Ed, I think she is very amusing, I can't think of a great show bar it anime or anything else that doesn't has character like that and as for Oshii, would somebody please tell me what the fauk is he famous for anyway. Sure, the guy directed the original Ghosh in the Shell film but the original concept is from Shirow not Oshii. I hate hypricrite.

I certainly didn't intend for people to flood the thread with these. There's a reason I asked people to email this stuff to me.
You know you won't be able to print all the one's you will get, so think of these as the "fansubbed" version. BTW the Vatican has ratified changing the rite of confession into the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and it's a Sacrament you need to be blessed with for that list me thinks. Wink

I agree, I'm enjoying reading everyones secrets.

I'VE seen attention hungry trolls trying to argue that Miyazaki movies are bad. Some of them posed as "professionals" even. Sheesh.

I've always wondered how many "proffesionalls" are in the Net. Even(or rather espicially) 12th years narutards thinks theay are such an experts that they criticize everything.
Eg- FMA manga relation in my country. Beautiful language, funny jokes, translated from Japanese. But thousands of trolls get angry becouse "OH NO! IT S**** BECOUSE IT ISN'T AS IT WAS IN ENGLISH SCANLATION!" Rolling Eyes The most fuuniest think was teh title- it was translated from japanese too, but only TRU version is ofc the english one Evil or Very Mad
(first post and offtop:P)

My confession:
-I don't mind Naruto in every dub. I can't stand Narutards from every nation.
-I think Oban-Star Racers is an good anime
-I was laughing watching NGE and Berserk

Btw: what is 4chan?

Yes, Jet is the one left crying in his vodka about it. Agreement here, but for goodness' sake, use spoiler tags!

*high-fives* Those movies were awful, but the show was, as you say, surprisingly unconventional for kids' fare and quite gripping at times. Great characters, especially for the Digimon which could be portrayed like cute, funny pets and weren't.

1. *retracts high five* What's wrong with shonen? It was good angst, genocide, and, well...implied gang rape is bad, but it helped the plot! (You can keep the high five by the way, it was non-refundable and I'm not that mean.)

2. Yeah, it really does, but I didn't think it was bad. It was a good 50-episode ride, but I wasn't moved much during the LONG Eva-esque moments. That's a MAJOR flaw. Emotion can't accompany a show you can't understand.

3. Replace "otaku" with "human beings in general" and there you have it. Have you SEEN the crap-movie saturation in America? And the patterns therein?

Ooh, confessions! Let me try!

--The only scenes during either of the Eva endings that I truly consider "good" were Asuka's big fight and the hilariously awesome "Angelic Days" sequence in episode 26. Everything else is one big mess of showboaty religious symbolism, pseudopsychobabble, or a perfect example of what happens when you don't handle your production budget properly. Also, Shinji deserves the biggest bitchslap that the universe can muster. Just because.

--DBZ is the visually ugliest series ever created, so much so that I can't stand watching more than 30 seconds of it at a time. Seriously. It's like "Barry Bonds: The Anime."

--CLAMP's character designs, particularly for males, look utterly stupid. And this is coming from someone who greatly enjoys what he's seen of Code Geass.

--s-CRY-ed's dub is the greatest thing ever. Don't deny it.

--Ergo Proxy is far too good for "Paranoid Android." Also, Radiohead needs to look up the definition of the term "listenable" and apply it to their music.

--Stand-Alone Complex is far superior to the original GITS movie. (I haven't yet seen Innocence to compare, though.)

--After sitting through 40 or so episodes of Naruto, I'm still waiting for it to get good. And I'm someone who adores One Piece and thinks Bleach is a hell of a lot of fun.

--The original Indigo League Pokemon episodes still rule. However, Tracy needs to go crawl in a hole somewhere and die.

--Virus Buster Serge is easily the worst excuse for an anime series ever created. The very fact that someone signed off on it makes me weep at night.

--No anime opening sequence will ever surpass that of Overman King Gainer.

Hmm...that's all I have for the moment. On various other topics, I've loved every Miyazaki film I've seen thus far, with Nausicaa being my personal favorite. FMA was a fantastic series throughout its run, though the second half was decidedly more intense. Eureka Seven features some of the best planning and direction I've yet seen in an anime series. Oh, and I consider Cowboy Bebop to be the most perfectly-crafted anime series ever made...and that includes Ed. Very Happy

**Anime nosebleeds annoy the living daylights out of me.
**I liked censored Naruto better. (maybe because of the nosebleed issue).
**For the life of me I can't understand yaoi. I mean ... why?
**I hate Mecha.
**I love Fruits Basket, but have trouble telling them apart sometimes. The characters all look alike.
**I find it hard to be objective when someone criticizes my opinion on anime.
**Sometimes I worry that the naysayers are right and my anime hobby is really just a manifestation of an immature personality. Then I yell "You're not the boss of me!!!" and turn Tsubasa back on.
**I cried when I saw the first Pokemon movie. (don't laugh, pikachu acting as a crash cart and 100 weeping pokemon was just too much to take) lol

Really, most of these aren't confessions. They're just random opinions, some of which might be unpoular with certain groups of people. I will post a real confession of my own, something which I wouldn't normally say in front of people.

- I watched all of Card Captor Sakura with my sister, and actually enjoyed it.

4chan is, to put it bluntly, the toilet bowl of the internet.

Anyways, I emailed my stuff to Zac, so I'm not going to repeat myself here. I feel like we are on Fandom Secrets here, which is funny because that is like half of the reason I go onto LJ at all.

The same reason that hentai exists. That's exactly what it is. Why does it bother you so much that different people are turned on by different things?

To actually tell you what it is rather than my opinion on it, it is an anonymous image board. It's an offshoot of the famous 2channel board. It's known for its offensive images and userbase, as well as having a large number of internet memes originate there. Basically.

This is exactly how I feel.

Confessions:

-Asuka from Eva is my favorite anime character, but I would probably hate her in real life.

- I love both the ending of Eva. I probably didn't mind eps 25 and 26, because I thought ep. 24 was one of the best in the series.

- I don't get the appeal of Harui Suzumiya.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

I also just remembered that I have met "that guy." He goes to my highschool's anime club. He really doesn't do many objectable things, but there is one thing. Whenever we watch an anime that has some fanservice or panty shots (And thats a majority of them out there.) he literally screams at the top of his lungs. All it takes is a little panty shot or cleavage and he screams. No lie. So. Annoying.
