To this day, that part makes me so sad!!! I figured it would wear off by now, but Pikachu's just too cute! I have no choice but to tear up. Damn you, Pathos! |

Yes, abso-friggin-lutely! I watched the fansubs as they came out, and I think the broadcast order is what made it a masterpiece for me. Episode 1: WTF?!! Episode 2: OK, this is actually the beginning... ... Episode 12: HOLY CRAP! RAAWWWWWK! Episode 13 (6, chronologically): Things make a lot more sense now... Episode 14 (7): Ties everything together. spoiler[Kyon kisses Haruhi]--one of my favorite moments in the series. The confusion as the series jumped around in time, and wondering what was really going on, just added to the fun. And that's what TMoHS is all about--fun and excitement. The dream that there is something mighty, mysterious, and exciting underlying the mundane world--a well-used theme, but given a unique twist. I was very glad to get the DVDs, especially for the little bits of extra footage they put in each episode, but watching in chronological order just isn't the same for me. |

| Glad someone else asked about the popularity of anime waning and received an answer because that question had been bouncing around in my head. I thought, as did another, that perhaps because anime was no longer "edgy" the masses decided to abandon it. Either that or those who were raised on Pokemon and Sailor Moon rejected anime as kiddie cartoons once they grew up and were embarrassed to be associated with the entire franchise.
As for a new hit show, I watched an episode of Ouran High School Host Club and thought it was hilarious, so I thought it might do well. Then I remembered it was a satire and those don't transfer very well to the general public. On the subject of Host Club, it seems to me that manga releases have moved in the direction of "shojo" or "school" genres - ones generally associated as appealing to "girls" -whereas the recent anime titles released seem to be "harem" or "shonen" genres - those generally associated as appealing to "boys." Anyone else notice this, or am I just seeing what's popular and missing the entire picture? Also, I won't say anything about the confessions except that the first lame confession was hilarious. I NEVER would have guessed anime were Japanese cartoons. Thank you for clearing that up Obviousman! Maybe something got lost in translation, so to speak. lol |

I do actually like what I've seen of Reign the Conqueror, bit misogynistic, but good visuals and storytelling. I even liked the english language theme (uh... more than the original, this is the only instance of this happening for me ever). |

This pretty much speaks for me as well. I like the series, I don't consider it the be-all end-all, but it's very well done for what it is, and fun to watch. |

| I'm just surprised that Virus Buster Serge wasn't in that bottom 10 list. If anyone could explain to me what the hell that series was attempting to accomplish, I'd be glad to hear it. | ||||

Apparently not, since there's even people in this thread denigrating it. It's because loli is semi-taboo around here and there's plenty of meaningless pedo sensationalism in KnJ as well as the good stuff, I suppose. I was fortunate enough to first watch Haruhi as the fansubs were coming out, and I can tell you the first episode hit me like a one of those folded paper fans you always see in anime. Since it was called “The Melancholy of somebody or other”, I was expecting a drama, but when I was hit with a very good parody of bad filmmaking, I was floored. It did a tremendous job of whetting curiosity since you could only kind of glean the personalities of the characters from their performances in the "movie"...and the information that it referred to but did not reveal via the non-linear broadcast order did a great job of maintaining that intellectual suspense the whole series. In the baseball episode, when Mikuru is frightened that “it might happen again”, we had no idea what she was talking about, and it was awesome. Spewing out all the plot at once then screwing around for the second half of the series (a la the DVDs) sounds like a terrible way to watch the series. I think the most important thing I can say about Haruhi is that it’s well-made from beginning to end, which is something I struggle to be able to say about nearly any other anime I've seen.
I'll half-agree with this one. Paranoia Agent and especially Paprika had rather mundane things to say through Kon's obtuse style(though Paranoia Agent is unusual for including a social dimension to the problem), but I think Millennium Actress works because exactly because it's a kind of stream-of-consciousness blend of memory and fantasy. Sometimes it really is about the journey rather than the destination, that is, the way of telling the story rather than the story itself. |

I was the one who submitted the Eva/ RahXephon confession. In terms of characterization, I agree with you that Eva's characters are more complex in personality and actions than RahXephon, so I won't argue with you in that department, though it was fun to try figuring out the motivations of the various characters I witnessed throughout RahXephon when I first seen it. But in terms of plotting, I liked Rahxephon better since it had enough plot twists to keep me interested in the series and a clear and concise ending. Both endings to Eva lacked any clear conclusion which baffled me more than satisfied me. Plus, I couldn't feel myself connecting with Eva's plot after multiple watches of the series. Not to mention that Bones managed to maintain its high quality animation throughout RahXephon. Gainax had a rep for going over budget with its animation on some shows during the 1990s, Eva being a victim of this towards its later episodes. One example: spoiler[having to sit through a still shot of Eva-01 holding Kaworu for nearly two minutes in episode 24 of Eva had me wondering why Gainax did this.] As for my comment, think about it. If a series hits it off big in Japan, American anime licensors are gonna milk its fame for all its worth to sell it to fans. Eva was massively popular in Japan when it was televised in 1995. ADV (for the TV series) and Manga Entertainment (for the movies) have done enough promotion to make Eva well-known to the most devoted of American anime fans which lead to a good number of folks to believe it's the greatest thing in the world since sliced bread. Some may even consider it a mandatory watch to others if you want to be considered a true anime fan. Even after having not aired in over a decade, the series is still heavily popular among anime fans enough where Gainax has a series of movies being released in a remake of the series. You don't see this much discussion, promotion, and popularity with Rahxephon. I state my honest opinion of Eva in a one sentence confession and I get put in a list of so-called "gallery of the lame" comments by Zac. This goes to show just how much of an influence that the hype of an anime title like Eva has on many anime fans. |

While browsing through this thread it looks like a couple of people missed this part of the article. Oh well. Time for my $.02 about the top ten list.....
1. I loved every minute of this series and its movie. 2. See #1. 3. Overrated like heck. 4. Yes I do think it's a masterpiece, though I personally prefer the original ending over the EoE one. 5. Once the filler episodes got into full swing I stopped caring about this series. 6. Loved it. 7. I only started watching this series because my best friend was praising it from when he first watched it. I'm glad he did. 8. One of my favorite movies. 9. Oh god don't get me started.... 10. One of my favorite series. |

Gainax did that because a) they were probably running low on money and b)that two-minute shot could still be milked for emotional impact, while saving money. It really does help if while, during those two minutes you imagine spoiler[Shinji in the Eva crying and thinking about the choice he has to make - killing the one person who understands him, or the destruction of mankind.] But, I'm a die-hard Eva nerd, so I make excuses for any of its shortcomings.
I think it ended up in the gallery of lame because everyone and their Mom bad mouths Eva, so it's not exactly a shocking confession for someone to say they think it's over-rated. |

| I can safely say I've seen at least part of each of the top ten.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) - Watched all of it. Enjoyed it, but frankly I would never watch it again. I don't really see how it got this high. 2. Cowboy Bebop (TV) - Own every dvd. Yes, the music gives it this high spot, but it's characters that make the series. 3. Bleach (TV) - Watched until the first filler arc, then never touched it again. 4. Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) - I've watched a few times, and while it certainly might deserve a spot here, there have been plenty of series, mecha and psychological alike, that outshine it today. 5. Naruto (TV) - Pretty much the same case with Bleach. 6. FLCL (OAV) - I enjoyed it, but another series I will probably never go back to, even though I own it. 7. Trigun (TV) - By far one of the most overrated series out there. Suffered through all of it, just so I could say I hate it without being a hypocrite. 8. Princess Mononoke - While I prefer other films over this one, I can see why this is here. 9. Inuyasha (TV) - Watched a few early episodes, but then I found things less formulaic and more interesting to watch. 10. Death Note - I've seen all of it, but it's really one of those series that obtained a huge reputation, and one I don't believe will stand the test of time. --------------------------------------------------------- Now that that rite of passage is over, I think I'd like to comment on the RahXephon vs Evangelion discussion. I love both series (though my fervor for NGE has cooled quite a bit in recent years, see above), but I really think RahXephon stands out more. I think a lot of the reason that Eva has garnered such a reputation is because so much was omitted. So FANS filled in the gaps:
And this can go on for pages and pages. Fans were really able to make Evangelion their own unique experience. Toss in the spoiler[Instrumentality - infinite other worlds, all their own little bubble within Shinji's mind] and the possibilities go everywhere, from what conclusion the audience really wanted, to the countless fanfiction and doujins out there (even the ones that get actual publishing). In that, "take any combination, any ending or conclusion," you get a lot of satisfied fans. Granted, there are plenty of equally unsatisfied viewers who loathe the series. So why does RahXephon stand out more to me? Frankly, the characters, Mu or otherwise, just felt more human. Sure, the situation is completely out there, but the characters within give more realistic reactions. I find it far more easy to empathize with Ayato, Haruka, Megumi and Asahina (19, truly a moving episode) than with Asuka and Shinji. Asuka and Shinji come off as exaggerations, while the four from RahXephon come off as people. ...and the fact that 80% of the character development does not need to be provided by the audience doesn't hurt either. | I have never seen Haruhi.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) -- I saw some episodes and I thought it was good. Nice animation and I liked Edward. 2. Cowboy Bebop (TV) -- Good show, but a mediocre story, and a very generic feel overall. I have no desire to rewatch Spike whine yet again or listen to some of the godawful music. 3. Bleach (TV) -- I enjoyed it. I thought it was hilarious whenever I watched it. 4. Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) -- I have seen a few episodes, but thought it was brillaint. 5. Naruto (TV) -- Again it's funny and has good action. An entertaining show much like Bleach. 6. FLCL (OAV) -- I didn't like it when I saw it, but I intend to rewatch it. 7. Trigun (TV) -- Absolute shit with pretty men as its only redeeming value. 8. Princess Mononoke -- Generic 9. Inuyasha (TV) --Again, see Naruto. 10. Death Note -- An excellent show that crosses beyond borders and can appeal to many demographics. Last edited by Dramatis Personae on Fri Jun 20, 2008 5:27 pm; edited 1 time in total |
