| My personal reason for why Speed Racer was popular here, but unpopular in Japan, is that Americans are interested in competition, while the Japanese go for cooperation. [It explains why Gatchaman ended up being the hit there, anyway.] Yeah, Speed gets help, but he basically does most of the work, and gets all the glory. Initial D is more successful there than here, on the other hand, because Takumi has to get his dad and friends to bail him out of trouble; he doesn't magically succeed on his own. Plus, Speed comes off more like some idealistic teen role model [I.E. "pure-hearted and courageous"] you'd find in America, not Japan, while Takumi has other desires and ambitions beyond racing. |

Well, I certainly hope that the movie ends up being more popular over there than over here.
Go "Speed Racer"! |
