haven't been there myself, but i'm sure alot of people in my town have...
considering everytime I go to buy anime in the one store that sells it here the person who happens to be in that isle books it outta there as quickly as possible as soon as someone comes around the corner.
kinda makes me sad because i'd really like someone to watch, talk about anime and manga with.... sigh....
anyway, I love Nina, She's so cute!! |

Hmm can't say I've experinced someone personally voicing their opinion to me, but there were times when I was in the manga section at borders and a coupla teens were browsing through as well, and one of them wouldn't shut up about how sucky/stupid anime is, blah blah blah. Gah, I was so tempted to use the manga I was reading to smack him upside his face -__-
On a better note, I've also had people coming up to me asking me what's a good series to read for their younger sibling. I try my hardest to avoid suggesting Naruto (I really wish some of the younger anime fans would broaden their horizen a bit). |

never encountered this problem.
of course, i imagine a lot of people around me are thinking all these things, but I'm a big guy and look kind of mean so people tend to leave me alone... |

I just realized that too
Never really had an experience like that while buying anime merchandise. Although there was this time when a classmate found out I liked anime, and she laughed. I asked her what was funny, and she said "You watch anime? Haha!" Never got that reaction again. |

The only encounter I've had was a Wal-mart cashier who was ringing up my purchase of Bleach Season 1 (good sale at $35). He said, "No offense, but how can you like this stuff? I mean, it's not real." I asked him, "Do you like to watch wrestling on TV?" (he seemed about the age). He was confused at first, thought about what I was implying, and then it dawned on him and said, "touche!"
Other than that (and he was polite about it), never encountered a jerk in public, but they don't scare me. The opinions of total strangers don't affect me in the least. |

I haven't had any experiences that I can remember with non-fans. I've had a few with fans who are jerks though. (Ah, the elitist purists laughing at me for watching my anime in English or actually buying real DVDs. I wish it were legal to kill them.)
Oddly I've several times gotten a positive reaction from the folks at the cash registers. Even with things like NHK in hand. (Speaking of which, according to the Gonzo thread all their stuff is horrible so I must have really bad taste for buying that right? ) Three times I've gotten direct positive comments "oh, I like that show too" and a few other times I've just gotten "hey, anime is cool" comments.
Maybe there are more anime fans in the south than I thought? Or maybe my policy of always being as nice as possible to competent service staff pays off? Either way, it is nice.
Poor Nina. Never blow up until after you know what the other person's going to say. |

That's happened to me more often than with people actually shopping. Everyone who works at the Waldenbooks I go to seems to enjoy manga, in fact one girl often approcahes me and likes to talk about One Piece and Tsubasa a lot (I also got her reading Fairy Tail, which she's enjoying). I also know an employee at Borders who watches quite a bit of anime, and one of my high school buddies got into anime simply because he worked at Best Buy's DVD section and the anime DVDs caught his eye.
Also, I work at Toys R Us, and like 1 out of 4 of the people that work there are into anime/manga (started off with 5 of us, and we converted a few more). So if a customer were to make fun of one of us, they'd soon find themselves outnumbered. |

I can relate to this strip. Seems you have to be carefull when you say you like anime, many people seem to mistake it for hentai... All I can say is that they are probally visiting the wrong websites... But try explaining that to them without sounding like you know TOO MUCH about the subject.
Oh yeah, and my mom read this article about manga, and it just happened to make a huge effort to cover the yaoi manga. So now she thinks im watching alotta gay drama and worse... Which is a bit disturbing.. But I didn't really bother explaining, I think the only proof she'll accept is grandchildren; she can be so manipulative at times. |

Really liked this one. I been in the "HAW HAW! Big-eyed Chinese drawdin'z!" situation before. I didn't blow my top like Nina, though. I've also been in the last situation before too, but it was a bit different. I was agreeing with a classmate that this one series was really good, and their reaction was the "No, I'm better than everyone else because I'm the only here that's watched it and love it. No one else has seen it, I'm spreading the word. You've never seen it, etc." I just walked away. |

Yeah, I always feel so self-conscious when reading manga in a bookstore, or drawing manga in class or something. People always go up to me and are all like, "HAHA ANIME LAWL!!!!!!!!!!!!"
But once I was reading Gravitation in a bookstore and one of the employees came up to me, smiled, and was all like, "Hey, you have good taste."
She had a lot of piercings. |
