This has happened to me. In gym class, I was talking with someone else about Azumanga Daioh, and someone butt in, and said,
"When does Ash use the bathroom?"
I told them that I didn't know, and they continued to go on...

Most of the time, though, I get positive remarks. I was able to wear the shirt that came with a lucky star dvd, and two people from Walmart were commenting on how cute it was. O.o

I can't say that it's happened to me from what I can remember. Only a few times I get strange looks from clerks but nothing really bad. If it's something they like the clerks normally tell me (like about a week ago I brought a Naruto Season 2 Uncut, one guy told me that he liked Naruto alot.) I had a few people even ask me to help them out into why I like it. Had to tell one person how different real anime is from Pokemon, lol.

I've only ever been confronted once about my anime purchase, and of all things, it has to be the time I bought "Sensitive Pornograph". This very perky cashier at my local Fry's stared at the DVD box and asked,

"So, what's this about?"

I replied, "Well, I'd make my asumptions by the cover" to which she began babbling about Yaoi in general and Kenshin, for some reason. Confused Definitely wasn't what I expected.

But aside from that isolated incident, I've never been questioned...

Well, that hasn't happened to me, but it something that I irrationally worry about. I'm probably the last guy in the last two panels though. Razz

missing one other panel i get in th store frequently: you actually pay for your anime?

Indeed Anime hyper

I've never gotten it because I'm probably so far past the realm of anything "normal" that strangers don't talk to me anymore... Either that or I'm in such bliss over new releases that I don't hear them o_o;;

People at school are pretty cool about my habits. My cousin once though, was like "Here, I want to show you something." and she pulled out her DVD of The Office, and some special feature or something. She played it without sound, and it's one of the lackeys with glasses with an anime girl picture in hand. She said "Do you know who that is?? *referring to the girl*" I said "o_o;; No..."

Good thing I said that too (Although I don't think the anime was really made, I think it was just a way to make the lackey guy even lamer than he already is Anime hyper). Apparently the girl is from a tentacle hentai who does... things to save the world or something.

Hah! I've had this happen a few times. I just tell them what they want or are expecting to hear. Then they just leave me alone Laughing

Never really had an experience like that while buying anime merchandise. Although there was this time when a classmate found out I liked anime, and she laughed. I asked her what was funny, and she said "You watch anime? Haha!" Never got that reaction again. Rolling Eyes

Yup, that's another reaction I've had. I never really understood either, but it was only once. Confused Rolling Eyes

Oh yeah, and don't even get me started about the fools who call everything asian "Chinese." In one of those "multicultural" college required courses I had to take, someone (a wasp) brought in "chinese" (his words) music to play, which was immediately recognizable as J-Pop (of course... not even something traditional or anything, it had to be pop music)... Normally, I'd let it go, but I had to call him out on it, considering the purpose of the class and all. Rolling Eyes And his response (can you guess? all together now:)... "same thing." What an ass.

Well, I process new books at the library, and one of my coworkers comments on how her grandson loves anime/manga, and how it's a little unusual, but nothing extreme. She's over 80 anyway.

Me, though, I feel I'm a little biased on Korean stuff; I just never acquired a taste to it.

Nina should protect herself from people like those. She could cosplay carrying an ominous weapon or hire a bodyguard like Hard Gay to ward off the non-anime population.

In my case, I buy anime Dvds while wearing casual clothes plus a shoulder-dangled Akatsuki coat, forehead protector, a left chained armguard and a security-tagged hakujin inside malls. Oh, if that fails to warn people, I bring out a TV news network ID and a digicam.

I've had this happen to me so many times, but it all came from my parents/grandparents, and not so much in public. Sometimes I get weird looks from people passing by the manga aisle that makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, but it's never been a problem. Most of the time now when I go to buy anime/manga (especially in Tri-County's Mall), the cashier's a fan too Very Happy.

I find I get weirder looks for my taste in music over my taste in anime/manga. I remember one conversation well:
person: "So what do you listen to?"
me: "Mostly foreign stuff, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, German and Swedish."
person: "Swedish?! You listen to Swedish music?"
me: "Well, I am Swedish. . . ."

I've had a few variations of this conversation, even with people who know my last name, Sjostrom.

There is a high Asian population where I live so anime and manga stores or at least that sell anime and manga stuff is quite common.

With regards to the "too old for cartoons" thing, you can tell them that what is childish is being overly concerned with what others might view as childish. (I think Tolkien said something to that effect.)

Or you can quote this comic.

Or you can tell them to go fly a kite in a storm.

Oh that was hilarious. How do you come up with this stuff?

I like the guy calling anime fans losers (punks), porn crap (parents) and ignorance of confusing the two nationalities (pea brained). "You got your mind into that 'Chinese, Japanese sh*t!!"

So true. I get haggled a bit at work. It seems that some think that all I do is watch anime at home because I'm always getting a package for some show. To be honest I'm so damn tired and busy I hardly get the chance. But I let them know...

Gawd forbid folks visit my house and actually find my "hentai" stash.
