Oh yeah, and don't even get me started about the fools who call everything asian "Chinese." In one of those "multicultural" college required courses I had to take, someone (a wasp) brought in "chinese" (his words) music to play, which was immediately recognizable as J-Pop (of course... not even something traditional or anything, it had to be pop music)... Normally, I'd let it go, but I had to call him out on it, considering the purpose of the class and all. Rolling Eyes And his response (can you guess? all together now:)... "same thing." What an ass.

Nothing bugs me more than when people make that (pretty racist)assumption. I was practicing hiragana and kanji one day before class and someone came up to me and asked me if i was writing chinese, to which I replied "no, it's japanese" and I got the same response. It really isnt the same. The kanji are, but apart from that they really really arent the same thing, so it bugs me alot. Same with people not realising that yes, people from indonesia, the philippines, cambodia, ect. are in fact, also asian.

I usually feel rather apprehensive while wandering the anime aisle at Best Buy, since I'm always half-expecting somebody to shoot me a weird look or make an under-the-breath comment as they walk by. Though, with my temper, I'd probably wind up yelling something inappropriate right back, which would probably not end well. Razz

I've never been able to wrap my head around the "it's the same" type of thinking. There is a reason why the two countries have different names folks.

Best response: "So America is just like Canada right." Point out the stupidity of their claim with a counter example. Do it loudly in front of other people. (Oddly enough, Canada and the US probably have a lot more in common than China and Japan, yet I can almost guarantee the idiot will immediately deny any similarity.)

It's sad racism is still alive in this form. Of course, it doesn't help that the census bureau lumps most of the people from Asia together.

Fight the idiocy folks. If a Southerner from the low end of Georgia like me can, so can you.

Heh heh, aint that true......

I've actually had more instances where I've met people who shared the interest with me then I have had people who made fun of me for it. In fact, that's how I've met most of my friends. Anime smile + sweatdrop I even went on a 4 hour conversation right there in the bookstore with someone once before! Shocked But that doesn't mean that it indeed has happened before. As many friends as I've met through anime I've also got a WHOLE lot of flack for it as well. I don't think it's happened much when I've actually been in the process of buying, or even looking in an anime/manga secton, and I've also had a few people that were just simply curious about it and that was it, but it indeed has happened before. In fact I've gotten picked on at school for it no less. Basically when that sort of thing happens I just smile, ignore them and go on about my business. Either that or if the curious ones, such as the lady who thought it was violent/porn stuff as one example, who have an ignorant and misunderstood knowledge of the stuff, I just simply and politely correct them is all.

Basically I'm just the kind of person who'll do what he wants, and not care so much about what people think about him because of it. If I want to wear an anime T-shirt or other anime related apparel aparel in public, then I will. If I don't then I won't. Same for reading manga/having a manga volume/DVD/any other anime related merchandise in my hands in public. If I meet people who are also into anime and make friends, great! If I do and they're idiots, oh well. If they hate anime and feel the need to pick on me for it, I could care less. I just go about my hobby in peace the way I want to no matter what happens in the process, and try not to take it so personal if anything bad happens.

How to respond to those questions:

"Aren't you a little old to be watching cartoons"

"Aren't you a little TOO old to be this stupid?"

"OMG you BUY that crap-etc"

You punch him in the face. Make sure no one is looking. >Very Happy

"Goodness! You actually watch those violent porn cartoons!"

"You don't? Man what a freak!"

"Lawl big eyed, (whatever he said)"

Yeah there IS no response to this. You just run. FAST.

Actually, here's how I'd answer those questions:

"Aren't you a little old to be watching cartoons?"

"You're never too old for anything. Smile"

"OMG you BUY that crap? Anime is so stupid... ect "

*smiles and goes about his business*

"Goodness! You actually watch those violent porn caroons!"

*pats her on the shoulder* "Ignorance is bliss my friend."

"Lawl big eyed, (whatever he said)"

"Oooooookaaaay......." *slowly begins to walk away*

"Oh hey, isn't that....."

"Why, yes it is! You're a fan too?" Anime smile

*SIGH* I guess it's tough to be an anime fan nowadays... and it gets even tougher the older you get too (points to self Anime cry )

That's why I respect my ex-gf alot. At 26, she's a pretty big otaku and isn't afraid at all to show it. Smile

I've been lucky, I guess, in rarely encountering such obnoxious people. Most of the time, other shoppers simply ignore me and I generally ignore them unless they seem like they need help with something. (^_*)

Wow, nicely done! Very Happy Unfortunately, I've gotten those remarks before, but not while I was in a bookstore or anything, normally from family members or elementary school kids. In bookstores and in Suncoast, there are sometimes clerks there that start recommending titles and talking about the product I'm buying. Very nice people. Wink

Though I remember when I was in eighth grade, there were a couple weasel-faced moronic boys that liked to taunt me and my friend, who also loves anime. Whenever we were reading each other's manga volumes, they'd run around us chanting "Japanime! Japanime! Dur hur hurrrr" Eventually I got fed up with it and yelled at them to buzz off. We didn't get bothered again.

Now in high school, it's definitely a lot easier. Everyone's pretty cool with me reading manga, the convo normally starting with why I read my books backwards. Laughing I've never gotten taunted for it, though the few actual anime fans in my school that I come across are very stand-offish to me. And one of the coaches on my public-speaking team is into Japanese stuff and lets her daughter watch anime, so she's very familiar with manga and we sometimes talk about Japanese stuff in general. Therefore I'd say negative experiences are few and far between.

When it comes to nationality ignorance, I recall one of my sister's (she used to draw in an anime style) former teachers saying my sister drew "Chinese-looking people" all the time. Rolling Eyes My sister doesn't like anime in the first place, so she got very upset by that.

I've just developed the habit of making a sarcastic joke out of every time someone asks me where I'm from, "There are only two countries in Asia, China and Japan. You pick where I'm from."

Some get it, some don't. But the worst of all is when someone asks me to say his/her name in Chinese.

"How do you say John in Chinese?"

Because of course, I know Chinese. I have to, right? Names don't magically change, people.

Oh, and one time my sister was asked where she's from--despite being born here, which of course is unthinkable--she said Mexico, and the guy was seriously confused. In fact, he came back to the counter and asked her, "Are you really Mexican?"

As for music, I've gotten some seriously xenophobic reaction against Japanese music at school.

LOL! I can picture that one pretty well. It's probably the same look as mine, when I saw the picture of the goodies for the first time.

To be honest that hasn't happened to me at all. It could be because the area I live in has a lot of asians (my neighborhood 25% asian). But I do know some people think that all anime is hentai or that they are just aimed at children.

I don't think that I have ever run into this problem. Mainly because of the following:

1.) I live out in the country, where many of us have strange hobbies.
2.) I buy 95% of my anime and manga online.
3.) I look young for my age. I'm 25, but can easily pass as 18.

I do get asked for suggestions from time to time, but I've never got any strange looks or remarks.

With regards to the "too old for cartoons" thing, you can tell them that what is childish is being overly concerned with what others might view as childish. (I think Tolkien said something to that effect.)

CS Lewis.

"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

Or, as the Doug Anthony All Stars [Tim Ferguson, I think] put it once, "you're only young once. But you can always be immature".
