I don't see how you would let pathetic fools like them bother you.If you like what you watch, whats the problem with buying it? Is this what the current mainstream does?It must be the vocal,con-going,mainstream crowd that I keep hearing about. The hardcore and elite many speak of,usually don't leave the house much.I understand Nina is always learning, but do people actually have this happen to them?I would love to hear some of these crap talking fans.

Just chill and don't be too serious. Making an issue about somebody commentating that you want to buy anime? Aren't you "too old for that"? Wink

missing one other panel i get in th store frequently: you actually pay for your anime?

Chances are the second pannel started out there or was at least heavily influenced by it (since the word "buy" is all caps & bold.)

Never really got these reactions much (outside of family,) but considering BB's anime aisle usually borders on either the Disney/family flicks or the computer games (and by making 99% of purchases online, I usually have nothing in hand to peg exactly which items are being checked over) there really aren't many stones around to throw for anybody going down those rows.

But the worst of all is when someone asks me to say his/her name in Chinese.

"How do you say John in Chinese?"

Because of course, I know Chinese. I have to, right? Names don't magically change, people.
Have you ever seen a series called Bones? There's a scene in one episode that reminds me of exactly what you're talking about. One of the characters is half Chinese and someone assumed she knew Chinese just because of that. Her response, after sarcastically asking why he'd think she knew Chinese and him stammering, was to say something to the effect of "you're Swedish. Let's hear some Swedish."

It's not as bad a thing but I've gotten something similar on occasion because I'm from the south. People expect me to say "ya'll" a lot and act like I'm from the hills or something. Some of my cousins didn't believe they were in the south because there were electric poles around. They were Yankee kids and thought everyone in the south lived in caves. (I wish I were making this up but I'm not.)

Oh, and one time my sister was asked where she's from--despite being born here, which of course is unthinkable--she said Mexico, and the guy was seriously confused. In fact, he came back to the counter and asked her, "Are you really Mexican?"
Unfortunately, the "all Asians are foreigners" thing is a very widespread bit of idiocy. Responding that you're American would probably blow some people's minds.

The sad thing is the question can be completely innocent but it always seems rude because of the implications.

Here's what I'd do to that person that said anime was cheaply done:
Walk over to DVD aisle and look for a Miyazaki movie. Then hand it to him and say: "Here watch this. Then get back to me."

As an old geezer who became a newbie otaku 3 years ago, I haven't had any of Nina's problems. I occasionally graze but don't buy manga. I'm an anime guy, but Witchblade is the 1st series I've ever collected. As long as I go straight to the anime aisle @Best Buy, grab the DVD & check out, I haven't had any strange looks or comments.

My problem is at home; I used to try to stay up & watch Bleach, Trinity Blood or Death Note. My wife would ask, "Are you watching cartoons?" I'd say, "Yes, it's [insert anime title]. It's a Japanese cartoon about [insert lame synopsis]."

She'd look at me funny & say, "Go to bed." Now you know why I own a VCR... Wink

I work at a Borders, and I always try to start a conversation with the manga buyers, though many tend to just want to get out of there. Like they're embarrassed or something :/

Best transaction evar?

A woman (mid-late 20s) and her boyfriend come in, buy a "What to Expect When You're Expecting", and the first four volumes of Vampire Knight. I wanted to be her kid so badly :'D

Got similair reactions from people at school when they found out I was a huge Transformers fan(pre 2007 though). But thank you Michael Bay, my main hobby is no longer something people snicker about!

My father also was "Isn't anime just for kids". Then one day he caught me watching Case Closed on YTV. He stopped saying that from here on it. I think because he actually enjoys Case Closed.

Normally people with trained mind will not express such shit in front of public. Its ok if you don't like anime or video game or whatever crap, that’s fine. But its completely different to openly shit out that crap in order to express self importance through insult. Those whom say things like that in front your face are idiots that enjoy seat in front of TV 10000000 hours with every form of garbage entertainment. To me what they express is not sort of rightful pride, but lack of social experience and education (education not related to anime, its what responsible parents told their kids how to behave). Again keep in mind that I am not underestimating people who don’t like anime, I am criticizing this kind of behavior of shit out crap in front of one’s face is annoying and anti social, not just anime it could be anything.

I haven't had to many people look at me negative for liking anime. Most of the time I ignore them and do something else. I have had one person ask me why I like anime and I gave him an answer and I asked why he hates it I still have not got an answer. that had happened in the 8th grade.
Most of the time I world go to the Suncoasct in my town to buy anime and almost all of the people that work there are anime fans. I should I worked there for about a week and then they closed. that was the best place to get anime.

The only situation I can remember in which someone was mean to me regarding anime occured in junior high. I had foolishly brought a volume of Chobits to school and was displaying it openly on my desk. Offhandedly, I showed the cover to a classmate because I figured she would think that Chii's outfit was pretty. Snobbily, she called Chii a slut and said that I should stop bringing porn to school...

Other than that, I've only had positive in-store experiences, especially with Best Buy store clerks. Wink

I know what you mean. I live in North Carolina, which is kinda south, but not deep south. I have a few friends from Minnesota and they all have a blast making fun of Southern verbal mannerisms, like "all y'all," or "real quick."

True. It's just gets irksome after a while and the desire to distinguish the naive from the annoying is too tiring.

Ahh well, 'tis life.

Now that I think about it, Best Buy clerks are really nice! Actually... When I wanted to get the limited edition of Haruhi, volume one, I was a few dollars short... Then, the clerk actually paid for it! Embarassed

I'm fairly sure you're being sarcastic and witty. Otherwise I don't think you got the point of my post at all.
