Am I the only one that thinks it's a little too early for R1 Anime companies to be putting out Blu-ray DVDs?

Ok i can understand 25 odd episodes series and big games on one disc........but what is the point of 10 year old 2 hour long movies being put onto this other than a better looking picture? Or do sony just want our money

I mean the transition from video to DVD was clear to see and was also probebly needed but blu-ray??? nah.

That IS the point. Given how old these movies are, and how old the original transfer is (most DVD releases of old shows are pretty terrible in terms of image quality), going from blurry VHS-esque DVDs to nice sharp 1080p is a massive leap in quality. A good example is the recent Patlabor remaster. Here's a comparison between the remastered DVD and the remastered Blu-ray versions (the 'normal' DVD version looks a lot worse than the remastered DVD too).

I hope Bandai/Honneamise puts out a Blu-ray version of the Gunbuster movie (or OVAs, though I don't know if they were remastered; I know the movie was), as the 'gattai movie' was terribly truncated and disappointing.

Umm, you do know the resolution difference between DVD and Blu-ray is more than the difference was between VHS and DVD, right?

Diebuster is only three years old, and Gunbuster is a high budget OAV with great detail, and was also recently restored. While it is true that things will only look as good as it's source, the restoration work was quite extensive. Trust me, if it's good enough for theatrical release (dozens if not hundreds of times the resolution of HD), it's good enough.

One could ask what's the point of cramming 26 episodes on to one disc? Are fans so cheap that they'd prefer that kind of over-compression? A blu-ray holds five times more, but you'd have to sacrifice resolution to get it all to fit. Who wants SD if they're into HD enough to purchase a blu-ray player?

As a huge Gunbuster fan with a new Blu-ray capable laptop, this is excellent news. I've seen a 720p HDTV rip of Gunbuster, and it looked great. While I prefer the OAV version, this should be a great set.

As for whether it's too soon, with HD-DVD dead, why not? Most were waiting for the format war to end, which it has. With the TV digital switch is coming up, more people are buying HD sets. HD downloads becomes mainstream are some time off. Now would be a good time.

I hope so. I want as many Blu-ray releases as possible. I'm definitely ready to see more anime in HD, since it really does look spectacular (when done right).

I was very happy with both Paprika and Apple Seed Ex Machina on blu-ray as the quality was top-notch and sharp (caution, may cause bleeding to the pupil if you stare too close Anime smallmouth). If it wasn't because Yukikaze was friggin $150 for 5 episodes, I'd have that as well.

Agreed, and with a list of "only" $35/disc the actual street & sale prices should be fairly palatable.

Edit: Most importantly, if it was aired in HD it should be released in HD (I'm looking at you Code Geass.)

What I don't understand is why they will stretch the three hour Freedom onto four discs. I have a handful of Blu-ray DVDs films that decide to place the extras on a separate disc, but these all have the over two hour feature on a disc by itself. Rescue Me packs 4 episodes (about 3 hours) onto a single Blu-ray disc. Weeds manages to pack ten half hour episodes onto one disc, although season two has 2 discs to cover the twelve episodes. The Company also packs three hours on the first disc. The second Blu-ray disc of Damages actually packs five episodes onto one disc. I feel as though this is just Bandai wasting space like usual. All of the BVUSA standard DVDs that I bothered checking were encoded on DVD5.

I wonder if episode 7 of Freedom will be included. This might be the deal breaker for me since I already own 1-5 (6 on order) on HD DVD which has cost me more (about $35 a disc) than the MSRP for the Blu-ray box.
