Um what? I'm a sub fan. I don't think these shows would turn a profit with the added expense of a dub. It's not snobbery, but common sense. Yaoi titles are by nature niche titles. And all of the titles are short and won't get shown on tv. Why throw the extra money into something when you know that there is a pretty big chance you wont recoup the cost? Why not put that money into a show that WILL recoup the costs, while still brining over titles cheaply that have a potential to make money if they are sub only

hell, im tired of this debate. Poor, poor tortured dub fans. You are treated so horribly by the big bad fansub watchers.

Well put. That is more or less that gravity of the entire situation. Today's economy is tough, and there's a lot of competition for teenager's money in the anime market. Unfortunately, yes, most of the shows mention are not big titles, and never will be. So stop trying to exacerbate the situation, you merely ramble on that all shows need dubs when in some cases, they won't affect who buys or doesn't buy the show.

Is the anime not good then? I really love the manga but I haven't seen the anime because I have heard some negative stuff about it but I will more then likely check out the first eposide or something, and if its good then I will buy it.

You buy anime based off the first episode?

I buy anime sight unseen.
Used to rely on Newtype USA. Now I have to rely on the cast which is an influence on picking movies to see in theaters. I've liked Johnny Depp since Edward Scissorhands, so if he's in a movie, I look for info on the movie to decide if I want to see it in the theater or wait for the dvd.
I've been reading Junjyo & it's really cute. THe cast includes Ryotaro Okiayu, Toshiyuki Morikawa, Takahiro Sakurai, Nobutoshi Canna & Kazuhiko Inoue so the makers took the time to load the cast with names instead of a bunch of new VA's which bodes well for the production. I buy most yaoi to support them making more, so it's already a given I & others in the yaoi community will buy this whether there's a dub or not. With Ryotaro Okiayu, I'd lean to listen Japanese first anyway. No skin off my back if they release it sub only & I can get it for $20 list per dvd instead of $30 list per dvd.

For all the insistance it was shojo that killed Geneon, why id Funi picking up a hunk of the uncompleted shojo titles?

ADV has never really touched yaoi with a ten foot pole. It's flirted with a couple shojo harem titles & mild yaoi undertone titles like Saiyuki, DNAngel, & E's, but overall ADV didn't go for yaoi. Look at Kimera-that is a male character & they basically tried to push it as female

I'll reiterate something since no one (as usual) seems to have noticed: unless there are firm plans, dates, info, this announcemente is totally pointless. Oh yes, they have the rights, but that is irrelevant unless they offer some concrete information.

At their panel, someone asked if they were going to be sub/dub or sub only releases. They said they would like to get them to be sub/dub but couldn't say anything for sure. Just FYI.

From my EXP, I belive it goes like this:

Chances that the anime will make a profit:

Junjou Romantica: dub+sub - no chance, sub only - 50%
Spice and Wolf: dub+sub - 50% , sub only - good chance
Ninomiya: dub+sub - no chance, sub only - small chance
Rental Magica: dub+sub - good chance, sub only - good chance
H20: dub+sub - low chance, sub only - 50%
Wagaya: dub+sub - 50%, sub only: 50%

This is just my personal opinion, but some of these titles have such a small fanbase (who most likely won't buy) that it does not justify the cost of a dub, even a really bad one. Sucks for dub-fans but....I don't care about them so whatever.

Oh, and about the split opinions of Junjou, welll...duhhh: Guys - "Gross, goddamn gays", Girls: "Waahhh......hot boy on boy"...get the picture?

Whoa, Nelly! This thread has taken an unexpected turn....

Anyways, thank you Kadodawa USA for liscensing these titles for an American release! Spice and Wolf is one of the shows that I was crossing my fingers for! Anime hyper I hope that you'll help it find a good company. Ever since I found out about the story (anime, manga, and original novel versions) I've wanted to get into it's world. It involves one of my most favorite themes for a story--the theme of a relationship between a human and an "other" (which can be a romantic relationship or a friendship or a guardian and ward sort of relationship or a brotherly/sisterly relationship, etc.). An "other" can be a god/goddess, cursed human, half-human, robot, cyborg, ghost, mythological creature (vampire, werewolf, kitsune, crane maiden, etc.), alien, etc.--any being with human intelligence or above that's not human or not fully human and seems to usually represent nature, technology, the supernatural, or the unknown. Examples of stories with such relationships include Eros and Psyche (a god and a mortal woman), Beauty and the Beast (a woman and a cursed man), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (a woman and a ghost), Inuyasha (a woman and a half-demon), Ah! My Goddess (a man and a goddess), El Hazard (a man and a demon-god/weapon/robot), Trinity Blood (a woman and a Krusnik), etc. Spice and Wolf sounds cool since it's a relationship between a man and an spoiler[old wolf goddess who takes the shape of a young woman]. I'm definitely looking forward to more news about Spice and Wolf.

I'm also looking forward to more news about Rental Magica. I first found out about it when I was trying to find the show that the character in someone's avatar was from. An enigmatic, smiling character with white hair and cats on his shoulders....heh, heh. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop Yup, sometimes it just takes me seeing an interesting character design to get me interested in a show.

It's nice to know that people are still putting their belief into a show that might be considered niche. It's probably because they think it's a great show, so they believe in it's potential. I hope that niche titles will always have their place in America. Like art house and independent movies, they add a nice spice to the larger portion of popular titles. Smile Now if only someone would mention something about Mononoke this summer.... Anime catgrin

Given that, I am not at all surprised, and very pleased, that Spice and Wolf is going to get released. I don't believe it's as much of a niche title as people are making it out to be, and it was quite popular in fansubs for only a 13-ep run. (Well, 12 eps plus the one unaired episode.) I'll be very surprised if it doesn't get dubbed, and I dearly hope Johnny Yong Bosch is not the one to voice Lawrence; I don't think his voice fits the role well at all.

First of all: Yes, Spice and Wolf! It's another good day to be an anime fan! Very Happy

Anyway, I too am very happy that Spice and Wolf is up for release, and also think that the show isn't necessarily a niche within a niche. Medieval economics is a theme explored within Spice and Wolf, but the show's driven by the Lawrence/Horo relationship. I doubt -- even though I really like Spice and Wolf -- that it could garner a television broadcast, but the show definitely has enough potential for a dub. I'd really like to hear it, at any rate.

Don't get me wrong, I hope that all of these shows can be given english dubs (I like my anime in both Japanese and English), as long as the market will support them. Although if I had to pick one it would be Spice and Wolf, since that's the only show on the list I've watched aside from Wagaya. I'd be happy if that got a dual-language release as well, but not in tears if I had to buy a sub-only set.

Ditto JYB playing Lawrence, by the way. I don't think he'd be a good fit at all.

I dunno. JYB has attained Morgan Freeman status in my eyes.

He's in everything.

Confused

True, but while I think Morgan Freeman is a good actor, I think he was kind of an odd choice for Sloan in Wanted Razz

Ack, I need to see that, though my friends have been telling me mixed things about Wanted.

"It's good."

"It's crap."

"Who cares, it has Angelina Jolie in it!"

Hmmm. Kadokawa USA want to release their anime in the USA, but don't have a distributor. ADV is a distributor in the USA, but doesn't have much to distribute these days. What's missing from this equation? Hmmm.....What's missing from this equation?
