Most Slice of Life series I see also fail to capture the essence of real daily life that I would imagine from the moniker. The only one that has even come close for me was Welcome To The NHK. |
Ugh, if you actually read the series, Hagu isn't a happy, smiley girl. Yeah, she does express happiness and everything, but like someone said, Hagu is an observer and keeps to herself, which is reflected in her behavior. And I can contest that there are 18+ who look like children. I have a friend who looks no older than 12 when she's actually 27 and my friends and her used to conspire to get her a child's ticket at the movie theater. So people small like Hagu do exist.
Also, if Welcome to NHK was the closest you can relate to, I don't think that's a good thing at all. |

Wait, Welcome to the NHK? The one that has half-naked women on the cover of every DVD? And somehow Honey and Clover is offensive?
I think Casey's got every right to not like the manga, or to read moe into a character that i frankly don't think is particularly moe. It's the rank vitriol of the review's style that i dislike. Professionalism demands a more staid approach to criticism. If this review had a less histrionic tone, it would be garnering a lot less controversy. Instead, it has a confrontational aspect that seems to accuse anyone who disagrees with it as somehow being sexist and of overhyping "pabulum" [merriam-webster online definition of pabulum: 1: food; especially : a suspension or solution of nutrients in a state suitable for absorption 2: intellectual sustenance 3: something (as writing or speech) that is insipid, simplistic, or bland]. Now, I've seen paid reviewers in newspapers do the same thing, and it comes across as juvenile in them as well. You can criticize something without sounding like (as another poster put it) a rant on a forum thread.
And again, I haven't read the manga; there's a chance I might not like it either. Nor do I have a problem with people using "big words" (I read George Will). But to have only one review for a series written in only one style is a, shall we say, less than ideal situation. |

This review got the exact response it was gunning for.
You see, this isn't a matter of people getting upset because a review site dared to step out of the mold, this is a case of someone disliking a popular series, being upset that it's popular and then carefully wording their review as to get the maximum amount of outrage. (And then Zac gets to come in, as is his wont, and conflate the issue with "dumbing our reviews down" and "people are talking about it, so it must be a good review")
I am the type of person that sometimes gets frustrated when things I dislike are thought highly of. Sometimes, because of this, I will purposely use incendiary language to provoke a response on various forums--because I want to argue. So the person that said that this reads like a forum post is right on the money.
This was a poorly expressed and written review in every sense of the word. If you want to argue about moe, keep it here, on the forums. Save the obnoxious, unprofessional vitriol for your blog. And if you can't do either, at least attempt to be entertaining instead of outraged. |

Thanks for this brilliant analysis.
7 pages of complaining, I think that's enough. |
