The flaws in the broadcast version of episode four were minor too. It just rubs some people up the wrong way, and the internet kerfuffle in Japan was totally out of proportion. There is a problem with animation "literacy" that spreads beyond just anime and beyond just viewers (i.e. the gradual suppression of individual animators' personalities in The Simpsons). Also it doesn't help that some people make their minds up from screenshots before they even see the animation.

It's sad that when Gurren Lagann tried the sort of experimentation with different styles that was the trademark of the show that was Gurren Lagann's genesis (Abenobashi) it ended up costing someone their job.

It looks like some won't have to wait so long. According to the Anime Corner Update, Bandai is trying to aim for November release of the dub on DVD, but that's totally dependent if they can finish the ADR in time.

After reading this review, this definitely looks like a series that I can get into. I'll be looking forward to the Sci-Fi broadcast.

I was going to wait for the dub, but I grew impatient after hearing nothing but good things about the show, so I bought the Special Edition Volume 1 w/Cd. I'm glad I did. The show is, as the reviewer said, ridiculously fun to watch. The only exception was Episode 6, which I felt devolved too much into the realm of stupid fanservice.

That aside, I will definitely be getting the dub version when it comes out.

i am of the opinion that the in episode music greatly enhances the craziness. i'm a big fan of the soundtrack in Gurren Lagann.

For those of you who are commenting about how bad ep 4 was, I must ask: are you basing that on having seen the fansubs, or having seen the DVD?

Admittedly, yes; I'm basing my comments on fansubs only. From everything I had heard on the forums previously, Gainax did not intend to change the artistic style used in the original episode 4 for the DVD version of TTGL. Although from what you are saying, Key, it sounds like a different version was used after all (because the TV broadcast version of episode 4 had a drastically different art style from the rest of the series), which is certainly a good thing.

Yeah... in the DVD release, they edited the script so that it doesn't fit like that. The line they changed it to makes it sound less comedic and more cliche. I think it went on line "Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me, the Kamina that believes in you."
It just adds to my many gripes with this release. Sad

Yeah, I heard that version when they played some previews for the dub at Anime Expo.... I like the more concise other version of the line as well, though, I only came across it in the issue of Cosmode that the Broccoli booth had Anime smile;;
Man, I'm all hyped up for this show now =3
It's been a long time since I've watched a show that was just bombastically crazy and super fun to watch, with mecha to boot. (Actually, I don't know that I've ever seen one that's as insanely energetic as this show seems to be.)

No I can confirm that DVD episode 4 looks exactly as bad as fansubbed episode 4 since I watched both. It was not changed for the DVD version.

And I am also of the opinion that episode 4 looks a lot worse than episode 9. I didn't see any issues with episode 9 at all in fact. *shrugs*

Huh? I can understand the issues with episode 4 since Kobayashi's style is rather wonky and purposely amateurish but the animation in episode 9 was very stylish and well-accomplished.

So let's see... Hagu gets slammed in the review of Honey and Clover, but no one has a problem with the fact that Yoko's practically falling out of her clothing? Why do they have to that with all the great female characters? I love Yoko, but come on!

Anyway... as someone who's seen the whole series, i felt like i never knew what kind of series it wanted to be. I loved how it started out, then it got bogged down in constant mecha battles, then pulled out for some good drama, and then got bogged down in mecha battles again. Is this a parody? a drama? an action series? is it trying to be all of them at once? It just wasn't my thing, although I know a lot of people who enjoyed it tremendously. and if it truly uses dubtitles (in spite of not having a dub?), I'm definitely not going to buy it. Maybe someday they'll re-release it for the hardcore fans, who knows?

I've been re-watching the series recently...and the thing about episode 4, both broadcast and DVD (no real difference, if any), is the animation style, not really the animation quality. So I think the reviewer has a point.

I couldn't stand it at all the first time around, but on re-watch it's not that bad and works well for some scenes, even if it's still not within my usual tastes.

I didn't expect this to be the show for experimentation and artsy stuff, to put it one way, and that hasn't changed. When I want that sort of thing, I'm usually already prepared for it in advance. Perhaps that also explains why episode 4's actually better on re-watch, at least for me. I knew what to expect, and this time I was more open to it.

And, on that note, I'd agree that episode 9, however, does have a consistently worse animation quality overall, but the animation style is back to its more familiar form, and the somber nature of the episode kind of makes it all fit. Still, several frames look horrible. Not enough to massively turn people off like episode 4's animation style, which is a matter of taste and preferences, but enough to want to forget about them.

In short: I think the reviewer is right, for the most part.

What a coincidence, there's a rightstuf ad currently at the top of the page with TTGL plastered all over it.
Boy, this "ANN is on the take" business never gets old, does it?

Hope I didn't cut anything I didn't want to. Anyway, I didn't say that to be some sarcastic prick implying anything.
Sorry, I assumed too much, because those kinds of comments are always getting made, both in these review threads and on other forums that bring ANN up as a topic of conversation.

Apology accepted, and I'm partly to blame. Thinking back, yes, those types of comments have cropped up before. Rather sad, isn't it?

Given some comments mentioned here, I went back and watched episode 4 again, and I still don't see what all the fuss is about. The second viewing reaffirmed my observation that there is, indeed, some stylistic difference in the actual movement of characters (although I had to specifically look for it to notice it), but the artistry remains generally consistent with what's seen in the episodes before and after. It's certainly nowhere near the visual contrast seen in episode 9.

As for DFBTG's comments: I turned the review in late Friday afternoon and Zac posted it probably as soon as he saw it in the system (a mere few hours later) because he knew it was one of the summer's hottest releases. Nothing more mysterious about it than that.

I didn't see anything particularly wrong with the first 5 episodes. Personally, I really am loving this series; it's over-the-top greate, not a very in-depth story for me, just a great adrenaline rush. Especially Kamina, he somehow manages to keep the energy high in the show and, at least to me, Yoko seems to be his foil, but not since she's over the top in a different sort of way.

I think this is one of the best releases by a company in a long time, in terms of content per dollar ratio. The series itself is very good, no doubt, but I think anime in general would be doing better economically in general if more companies did this sort of release more often.

ADV's original volume 1 cover. Note the similarities:
