I was in Japan right before it started airing, and the amount or promotion going on for it in Akihabara was astounding. I'm not sure if overall it's as successful as Haruhi as a show, but they're definitely trying to commercialize it in every way they can. They've released like 25 audio cds! |
Early on there were some bootlegging issues in Akihabara where Lucky Star was used as a marketing game by store owners. I don't know if anybody remembers the red haired Konata's placed next to products with signs indicating that the very fictional character was interested in them and wanted shoppers to purchase them, but there was some serious abuse of the series imagery that could have resulted in lawsuits. This of course was before the show would eventually embrace it's commercialistic aspect entirely with moments like Kagami claiming her favourite manga was Full Metal Panic, Tsukasa fawning over a very real and purchasable Mikuru figurine (you can find it on EBay) and Konata dressing as Haruhi and going to an Aya Hirano concert. All of which tie into products or people that Kadokawa Shoten has an interest or copyright in.
Shame as I was really enjoying the show up to that point and then they just made it too obvious that I was watching a show with some seriously overbearing product placement and carefully structured commercial appeal reaching down to it's very core. |
