| Makes sense really. Draw more younger people into the library with the manga, and they just might check out more than just the comic books. I mean really, who goes into a library and can't find anything(besides manga) they are interested in? Not many I bet. It's the same thing as a grocery store making a loss leader for a couple of weeks. |

| Reaching the young readers is one thing. The way to do it is to open doors. Manga is the door opener, and it can open up libraries to new possiblities but at the same time, young readers discover more about the libraries. Even if they don't there could be a constant flow of manga checkouts. |

The problem we have, in my experience, is not so much drawing in young people (children tend to be our most active users in terms of withdrawals per library member) - it's retaining them once they get past the age of 14. Our children's and teen's graphic novels are very popular amongst 8-14 year olds but they're actually rather less helpful in retaining 15-18 year olds than the conventional teen lit section.
It doesn't help that the most popular series are all quite long with all the attendant logistical problems and budgetary demands that entails.

You'd be surprised - I'd say at least 25% of our users (both children and adults) only come in for the public access computers. |

I'd love to use libraries more, but it's so hard to find the time to read as much as would be good... even without the anime/manga habit it'd be tough.
It's an interesting trend though, at least it does get a few more people to come in who wouldn't have otherwise. |
