Black Lagoon: The Second Raid? Definitely sounds like something I'd buy
On a more somber note, it seems my wallet is doomed to be empty between October and January. |

| so the US is getting a lovely box set of Ouran. I bet if some company ever deigns to release it over in the UK (in about 2 years time probably) it won't be as nice as this... |

I don't like the wording of the following statement:
| Quote: | | ...and looking beyond the usual market of anime fans for trends and opportunities. |
(quoted for emphasis)
Does this mean that (select) future licenses may or may not get the "Shin Chan" treatment (wherein, as I undertstand it, a show isn't really "translated" at all, but instead is given a "parody dub" that makes fun of both the show, and anime in general, as well as making fun of anime dubs, all the while insulting everyone's intelligence)? I sincerely hope that this line refers to something else.
Also, while I am aware that Funimation has no control over this, I would nonetheless like to state for the record that One Piece needs to return to American television (in a mainstream slot like Toonami). Otherwise, Funimation will be giving Al Kahn the last laugh, IMHO. In any event, these "season releases" they're doing, while providing viewers with retranslated episodes, just isn't going to cut it by itself, also IMO.
Whatever the case may be, in terms of translating, one thing is certain: Funimation can't have it both ways. That is, they can't do faithful translations one moment, "Shin Chan-style" parody dubs the next, and then back and forth again; it's nothing more than hypocrisy, IMHO.
If the above post sounds like a rant, I apologize. There were some parts I needed to get out of my system... |

I understand that this is your opinion, but I don't see why Funimation "can't" have it both ways. Funimation's translations merely reflect how they think the show would best be marketed. I haven't seen any of Shin-chan, but from what I understand, the show is very culture-specific to Japan, and simply wouldn't retain much (if any) of the original humor when directly translated into English.
Aside from which -- though I know some people on the forum will disagree with me -- I personally think that Funimation does a good job with dub translations in general; certainly most are no where near as deviant as Shin-chan's, so I don't think they are really trying to have it both ways.
Also, I doubt that the quote you referenced is an allusion to more such dubs necessarily popping up in the future. Regardless of the potential audience of the show, I don't think that type of treatment works in the vast majority of cases.
As for One Piece, I'm not a fan myself, but I too hope for those that do like it, that the show gets another shot on television (though I'm not too sure of the chances of that...). |

Sounds more like a crossover between Black Lagoon and Full Metal Panic. If that were to happen, that would certainly peak my curiosity . |

I personally think they did a pretty good job translating Shin-chan and re-writing the script for an American audience, especially considering they want to air it on TV. They could've done a direct translation of the script, and retain the Japanese cultural references. Probably most Otaku would get some portion of it.
But if they wanted to air it on television to attract people who wouldn't otherwise be interested in the series (or anime, for that matter), leaving it with the original script would be shooting yourself in the foot. How many non-anime fans do you think would watch a show mentioning some obscure aspect of a culture they know next to nothing about, think it's funny and keep watching? |

Only a little while longer for Black Lagoon SB and Claymore! Though a little part of me does want to wait for the season sets I will tough it out.
I do like the trend of waiting until the end of a series to release the box set. I would rather they save all the extras for a seperate disk included with the final volume plus the artbox. The only time I get special editions is when they come with soundtracks or artbooks. Other things like key chains, statues, toys, post cards, panties, etc. are useless to me.

Sadly the season likely could be boiled down to a few minutes and have nothing lost.

I have been saying for a while now that the next Gundam series should be Black Lagoon with mechs. |

I wish they would've given out some info about the Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog) license. I've been waiting patiently for about 2 or 3 years now for some news about that.. I know there was that trailer ADV put out. so atleast I know it's been dubbed somewhat.
I would just be happy with a "we're working on it."
I understand that dealing with a series that has over 220 episodes is hard, but still.... |
