In my Hampton Roads backyard I have the annual Nekocon, about 90 minutes away is the annual Anime Mid-Atlantic, and three hours away is the annual Katsucon. I have plenty of options for anime conventions. I go to Otakon for the spectacle and the fact it is the biggest anime convention east of the Rockies. Otakon is special, that is why I have dropped the cash down, made the 10 hour round trip drive, and fought the crowds. The Industry is a major part of what makes Otakon important to me. For others it may be the Masquerade, or the Concerts. If Otakon becomes just like any other anime convention, just bigger, there really is no reason to travel that far and pay the high ticket price for it. |
