The BCC would give otakon any weekend that it wanted pretty much. it's the largest single source of income to baltimore every year for the past 3 years. The amount of money that it brings in would sway the city for pressure the BCC into anything otakon wanted pretty much.
As for being smaller than AX, they are also a fan run convention; This being said, they don't have the financial backing of every company that throws themselves at it. They do extremely well for being based from fandom. Everything in volunteer work; The show stands to prove it too.
Also, Otakon is a convention that is based out of State College, PA. (it started there in 1994) so a move to Detroit would be plain out of the question as it would be to much travel for all of the volunteers that work the convention (since they don't really get paid to be there, the travel time would be ridiculous for most) The only place i could see it moving would be to DC if they out grow the BCC and 1st Mariner arena. This year, the 1st mariner did help cut down on the congestion during the Jam Project show and masquerade. The convention center seemed almost silent while those events were going on. |

This question is all addressed on the Otakon website. We ain't moving anytime soon, and if we did so, it'd be DC. That's the official answer, more or less.
An important clarification: The BCC *cannot* just give us "whatever weekend we want" --- otherwise we'd always happily be the first weekend in August. They have to honor their contracts. And sadly, we bring in FAR less revenue than other conventions, which book as much as a decade in advance. Religious conferences, firefighter cons, industry conventions, etc. all compete for the space and weekends we prefer.
And AX is run by fans....but they working under a different structure; they are technically a trade show for the industry, and they're treated like that. Being in a media saturated market in the entertainment capital of the west coast of the US certainly helps them gain visibility. Doesn't mean there aren't some great people working there but it's a very different feel, as the folks who visit both cons will tell you. |
