I thought the agenda of the CG Astro Boy was to be underwhelming and forgettable. Now as a liberal I can enjoy it for what it really is!

Doesn't EVERYONE have an agenda nowadays? Unbiased media doesn't exist anymore, if it ever did. It's all "the left is doing this" or "the right is doing that." That's why I avoid the news altogether. I can live with less lying in my life. I took a Journalism course in college, and one thing we were taught is that freedom of the press does not mean it has to be accurate. The only limits they set on themselves are avoiding libel and slander lawsuits.

It's quite frustrating to see Conservatives push this kind of tripe down people's throats. They'll take any movie (recently, the fabulous new "Muppets" movie came under fire from Fox News for "brainwashing" children into being communists) and add some sinister undertone to it to make it sound threatening to children, when generally, Republican-funded films are much more blatant in their pushing of propaganda and ideals. It's completely ridiculous, and makes me wonder if the qualifications for being a Right Wing pundit entail that you sniff copious amounts of glue before making a statement. Just saying.

I can't help but notice that the story does not actually identify anyone of note complaining about the movie (or any of the movies, really). I mean, the "some guy was whining about the movie" standard is not a hard one to meet for any movie.

Usually, I would say these people are full of crap.
USUALLY. But in the case of the Astro Boy movie, they are 100% correct. First let me say some positives about the movie. The first 30 minutes, and the last 15 minutes are pure Astro Boy fun. The weird and questionable 45 minutes or so in-between is highly laced with political agenda up the whazoo. The current mayor or president is obviously being used to parrot and mock the conservative agenda at the time of the film, while at the same time, traces of left wing campaign propaganda are snuck in (Obama admin catch phrases, posters, ect) I am not here to tell you what is a "good" or "bad" political leaning. I am here to tell you that Topical Political Agenda's have NO PLACE in children's programming, films, or movies. Unless of course you are trying to send your child in for "Re-eduction" as it were. It's like the writer of the film had a huge gap in the middle of the story to fill, so instead of writing something "Good", and something Astro Boy/Testsuwan Atom related, he hodge podges his own political beliefs into the giant gaping hole of the movie's middle plot. It was intrusive, impractical, manipulative, and just plain awful that he would use a beloved franchise like Astro Boy as his political platform. As a fan of Tezuka Osamu's work, and basically fathering of anime, This movie is a travesty and a stain upon his memory, and the writer of this film should never be allowed work in the movie industry ever again. TLDR: "WHY WOULD YOU PUT A TOPICAL POLITICAL AGENDA IN A CHILDREN'S FILM?!" For those who "didn't notice", you either didn't pay attention to the hammer swinging at your head, OR you didn't pay attention to the politics it was mimicking at the time. The muppets accusation is Lulzy. However, the Astro Boy one is very much valid. As a straight up fan of Tezuka's work, the Astro Boy movie is downright offensive. |
