Still, I'm seriously considering Magic User's Club as one of the shows we'll watch at our anime club this coming semester. One of my stated goals is to show them anime they haven't seen before and definitely nothing that's ever been on US TV. Certainly this qualifies, and I believe it has good appeal to fans of both genders, which is always a plus for clubs.

/200th post, whee ^_^'

Do it. When we showed it in our Anime club it went over well and the older folks still mention it from time to time.

Hard to imagine this is buried treasure as I actually have heard of it xD but, as well, I know that it wasn't and isn't that common and I'm sure a lot of people need to be introduced to it.

This a great little series-I disgress that the tv series after the ova series ends is inferior-it's just as good as the ovas-just a more "slice of life" aspect.

(although while I do like Sae, my favorite character in the series is really Akane Anime smile + sweatdrop .)

Me too. Smile

Also, in an interesting turn (altho probably unimportant to most people here) it was recently reprinted in Japan:

(The set also included a Jeff-kun doll)

It's also an awesome show/OAV series and I also agree on Satoh's track record of good shows.

I decided to buy this show on DVD immediately after seeing the OP as a preview on another Media Blasters DVD. The animation and direction of the OP were just so wonderful. It was no shock when I looked it up and discovered that my man Itano was responsible. I think that guy is one of the main reasons I got into anime.

A funny thing about the preview. I watched it many times before my actual DVD's arrived because it was so good, and I fell in love with the pretty girl with long brown/purple hair. I could just see the love and adoration in here eyes when she looked at the boy with glasses. And she was just so cute. I knew she would be my favorite character.

"She" turned out to be Aburatsubo. Boy was I crushed when I found out he was a dude. Stupid token gender ambiguous anime characters. Laughing

I know this is a late reply, but I prefer the TV series version to the OAV. It's more slice of life, the fanservice is toned down, and the pacing is slower and more easygoing. While it's certainly different from the OAV, I found it easier to take in and appreciate.

Magic User's Club was something I saw when I started tape-trading anime a decade ago, watching a fansub of the OVA's, I found it very enjoyable and loved the pacing of the series. Haven't seen the TV series but I think I would be in favor of the OVA more personally.

wow, tape trading? Really? Those were the days xD Never did that myself though, usually just through distros and such.

I'm watching through the OVA right now and then I'll move on the TV series, given they were boxed together. Consensus has been in favor of OVA so I'm actually kind of excited to see the TV series and form my own opinion ^-^

Never had the experience of dealing with those on the higher end myself, so tape trading was the best I could deal with. In those days, the net was still young, and online distribution as we see today didn't exist, besides finding out about certain fansub groups through webpages, forums and chatrooms, finding the lists of what they have in store, and making connections happen.

Speaking of which, a friend of mine who currently resides in Kofu, Japan as a English teacher there sent me a nice little package of goodies to commemorate the 10th anniversary of having been friends with me since the first time I found him through Usenet! Glad we are still in contact.

It would be interesting to see what it's like or some of those subtle differences I can only suspect to be the case in these adaptations.
