Man I can hardly wait for Capcom v. Tatsunoko but... is it to much to ask for at least 1 Shurato character?

Or at least a another Gatchaman member (Joe? Please? Out of costume? Please, I want to rain death with a billion feather shurikens!)

Slightly OT, but why doesn't this column show up in the RSS feed?

Wow, Megaman 64.... there's a blast from the past. I played and loved that game, but I never beat it. The last boss was so freaking hard. I had all the armor upgrades and as much health as I could find, but he'd still cream me.

The plot and style of that game was very anime-ish, so that explains why I enjoyed it so much. I thought that the whole alternate universe Megaman was weird, but it was still a very enjoyable game.

I'm really enjoying this column a lot. It's really good to hear about some of the obscure games and the history behind them.

I think I saw that game 'Alisa Dragoon', but it never sunk. Surprising that 'Gainax' played a role in it.

Looks like 'Capcom' is cramming everyone into this game. Surprising that they are using the 'MM' from 'Legends' again. Hopefully, that is a sign that they may work on a sequel. But chances are it might not end up on the PS3. Only time will tell. I would love to see a new 'MML' game. Smile

As for the 'Tengai Makyo' series, I'm really disappointed that this series never really made an impression here. In a way it ranks up there with 'Lunar'. When 'Sega' and 'PC-Engine' titles shared the same bed. Well, sort of if you consider stuff ported over to the 'Sega CD' and 'SS'. Considering the amount of buzz around the 2nd installment 'TM2: Manjimaru'. Sony, was supposed to release the 3rd installment remake 'Namida' on the PS2. Of course that never happened. Chances are it would have never sold well given the graphics. But after learning more about the 'Fourth Revelation' I was deeply interested in the overall series. Too bad it will never come over. I'd port it for myself, it's not the first time I've bought import games, but I'm not fluent enough to enjoy the story. Sad The 'Tengai' series "father" is 'Ouji Hiroi' most may know him as the creator of the entire 'Sakura Wars' franchise.

A 'Princess Maker' game that's safe? Now that's interesting.

One could not imagine the joy I felt when I saw that picture of Mega Man (abiet, Legends version none the less) for this column.

And from what I recall, Keiji Inafune (Mega Man's creator) has been wanting to make a third Legends game for pretty much forever, but apparently budget constraints have prevented him from doing so.

Won't stop him from plugging in his desire at every chance he gets though. :)

I really enjoy this column, and the history of "Alisia Dragoon" was really interesting. Man, if I had grown up with a Sega instead of NES/SNES, that sounds like a game I would have become completely obsessed with as a kid. Kick ass fancy lady with pet dragons and creatures? Count me in. I wonder if this is available on an emulator, as I don't have a Sega anymore.

Sounds like you know about the PC-Engine,Here's another one from GAINAX.They did much more than just anime.

Gotzeniener Front,Back,Screens 1,Screens 2.The hero and the monster both deal fatal hits and die, leaving the princess to fend for herself. It's a fun action RPG.

Tengai Makyo:Far East of Eden has a bunch of titles.I liked the arcade fighter and the anime cinema game on the PC-FX.

It would take you about ten seconds to put together an emulator for Alisia Dragoon,Robin.I loved the Genesis but I couldn't live without my NES/SNES.

Ken is a confirmed character. Still holding out for SoulTaker's Kyosuke Date!

EDIT: Forgot an "l".

Do keep in mind, Megaman 64 is just a slightly uglier, and worse sounding (heavy compresion on voices) version of Megaman Legends. Some of those bosses did have their moments, but with some practice, the final one isn't actually all that difficult. I thought some ofthe Bonne's vehicle weapons were harder.

I liked the plot and style a lot too, even if a lot of other people did not. I think in 8 and 16 bit megaman was an easier sell. 8 bit was too vague to not look how people felt it looked in their minds. Megaman X dominated most of the 16-bit era with its edgier style and hard rock. Megaman Legends was more calm, layed back, and "shouneny". I don't think that meshed well with all the fans out there. Similar to Megaman Powered Up on the PSP, it may havej ust been too cute.

I should point out though, it's still technically within the Megaman canon timeline. It isn't an alternate universe at all. It's in the distant future. long after the X, Zero, and ZX series come to a close.

OMG!!! I think I've seen this image before. It's shocking seeing 'Gainax's name on this one. I'm going to have to check out that 'Notenki Memoirs' (we have it here at the library) to learn more about things they did. Can't believe they were responsible for 'Princess Maker'. The in game graphics aren't too shabby. The cutscenes remind me of stuff from the first 'Lunar' game. In that last scene I swear she looks a tiny bit like 'Misato'. Guess, that some of the 'Gainax' artist charm. Knowing now that 'Gainax' did work with 'GameArts' resolves some mysteries about the 'Lunar' artist. Toshiyuki Kubooka' (Lunar, Giant Robo, Gunbuster, Nadia, IDOLM@STER, Batman: Gotham Knights) and 'Yoshiyuki Sadamoto' (EVA, Nadia, Gunbuster, FLCL, etc...) have very similar styles. But still very distinct from each other under closer inspection. So it's not a pseudonym. Both worked on similar projects for 'Gainax'. Now it all makes sense. Wow, that's really awesome.

I'm going to look both of these up and see if there are any vids on this.

Yeah, I often hear quite of bit of folks mentioning the fighter for the 'Tengai' series.

Thanks for sharing that. Smile

I'll agree that the Ys games aren't the greatest things in the world. They're B-level games, but they're very good diversions and decent "palette cleansing" titles. Ever play back-to-back 50+ hour RPGs and couldn't get into the second one because you're too wired into the system and style of the first one? I've found if I pop in Ys III and play through it (It's a mediocre game by any standard, but I enjoy it), my mind's reset and ready for the next one. Weird, but true.

I picked up Ys I and II off VC and I haven't been this assaulted by an 80's drum machine since Top Gun (Yeah yeah, released in 1990, but still....). But I kid the dated-but-catchy music. It's still a lot of fun despite being so archaic (Really? You run into enemies? That's your attack?). Plus, the voice acting's better than Ark of Napishtim!

Alisia Dragoon was good. I would recommend it to platformer fans. El Viento was good, but man the US art was terrible.

And yes Cave is making a DS game, know about it for awhile.

MUSHA is a great game, but like the rest of the Compile shooter it's long and easy.

I adapt well to change but I know what you're saying.I usually revisit the ones I preferred most.I dig Falcom's remakes on the PC though.Especially Y's III.It's a must have.

Once again,awesome Hahn avi,Henry.

It was hard to talk people into buying the expansion pak for the N64.IIRC Megaman was one of the few that severely benefited from the pak. There were some games that needed the pak to even run.Majora's Mask and Donkeykong 64 needed it.I believe it was also bundled with Rogue Squadron and Majora's Mask if you didn't buy it separately.Megaman 64 could actually play without it,but it was hideous.Too bad N64 only got a part one of Legends.

I'm playing through Xak III on the PC Engine right now.The game is violent as hell. It's not for the faint of heartspoiler[This old school RPG starts out with a hero named Ratok. As you leave the beginning town and head towards the castle a cutscene shows up,the kings army are being beat down by a huge beast. The beast destroy's what are left of the soldiers and confronts the king. The king tries to defend himself but is run through with a giant trident. There is blood everywhere in this game. One of the side minions flies in with the captured princess. She sees her father dead in a pool of blood. The minion then turns and threatens to eat her.She says she would rather die than be eaten. So he grants her wish by ripping her head off. Shocked I haven't see violence like this in a while.Reminded me of Elfin Lied.I hate when females are killed.Especially like that.Oh,well.]

People hated Legends because they wanted Mega Man 9 and X5 (at the time). Legends was too different. The character designs didn't mesh with a lot of gamers. The prominently featured voice acting was so-so (though not bad by any means), and unforgiving nonanime-fan-types didn't care for it.

Bah, if those were factors in MML doing poorly, then Spyro and Crash Bandicoot wouldn't make money. No, they hated Legends, because they wanted it to be pointless and repetitive, but with a shiny coat on it. They didn't want a "story" or "gameplay", which is also why the Sonic Adventure series failed here, and, with the exception of Advance and Rush, we had to settle for those wannabes.

Edit: oh, and Mario 64 IS innovative.

No, it's just Super Mario World in 3-D. That Musashi game gave me more than M64, and it wasn't even "fully" 3-d.

My only hope is that Capcom gives Inafune the okay to make another Megaman Legends, because he needs their approval before he can start tossing out ideas.
