The History Channel is the last place you should be looking for historical accuracy.

Okay, I should have said a book or a museum or a bloody time machine or whatever else you history buffs use. Sorry if my standards of historical accuracy which rest somewhere roughly around Indiana Jones territory don't meet your standards.

That's a bit harsh. Why would you say something like that?

It could be lee, but that might be just me. Razz
But the point being, a katana would be no match to someone with a pistol, or rifle whether in close battle, or not. The person with the katana might get one, or two, but sooner, or later he/she's going to bite the bullet.

Looks interesting, but I don't expect the animators to stick closely to the historical aspects of the war. Some of the more infamous aspects of the SS won't probably be touched (Einstazgruppen, Totenkopf, etc...). If anything, the Waffen-SS will still be shown as evil, but participating with the Wehrmacht in regular army operations in White Russia.

Still, this is anme, and not Maus, so I expect it to have the regular dose of violence, romance, betrayal, bits of fantasy and supernatural, with a good helping of special effects to decorate it all.

Should be interesting to watch, whenever it arrives.

(Sigh)

A katana is the best melee weapon != a katana is the best weapon in a melee / close-quarter combat. Even an excellent katana wielder cannot face a trained shooter with a working submachine gun. The latter, however, is NOT a melee weapon.

Definition of melee weapon: when attacking the enemy, the weapon is still in contact with its user. Bows, crossbows, stone slings, catapults and trebuchets are cold weapons but not melee weapons; they are projectile weapons. Most, if not all (not in my knowledge at least), firearms are not melee weapon. Javelins and some balanced daggers are dual-purpose weapons.

Frontiers of Europe since 1945... And check Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

Youth - they are members of komsomol.

History? This is joke here. Better go to the bookstore.

I'm afraid WHAT Soviet could show if they really want to make "historical" anime...
They just started change history in textbooks...

While the anime does look good, as a russian, I'm pretty tired of WWII circlejerks. I'm tired of media products that pride themselves on accurate depictions of old machineguns down to individual bolts and, sadly, that is exactly what First Squad is. This time it's not a videogame, book or movie - it's a cartoon. Whee!

Krzych Ayanami

huh? I assume by "Soviet" you mean "Russia". Care to explain about the history books and the joke? I'm not trying to start a flame war (even though I've been known to do that in the past), just curious.

Because I've been reading history for decades, have a degree in history and have rarely ever seen a TV history documentary (covering a subject I already had some knowledge of) that didn't make significant factual errors and / or omit so much pertinent information as to give an entirely false impression of the subject and / or mention only one side of an ongoing academic debate (without mentioning the existance of a dissenting view). The History Channel (or the Hitler Channel as it's more commonly known...) has a particularly bad reputation - it's mostly sensationalism and little substance.

Not that any of this makes any difference to First Squad - it doesn't look like my cup of tea but that has nothing to do with its historical accuracy or lack thereof. Unlike the Histroy Channel's shows, it's not pretending to be an objective, factually accurate documentary.

In a duel? Possibly.
In mass combat? Not much use against a pike block...

Also, I'm under the impression that most of the katanas in use by Japanese forces in the 1930s and '40s (i.e. those issued to troops rather than inherited from samurai forefathers) were cheap, mass produced rubbish designed more to invoke the martial spirit of the past than to actually be effective combat weapons.

Agreed. Let's see if the katana in First Squad has a name of its own etched near the hilt -- a sign that it was custom-made, not some mass-produced crap.

Yeah, I noticed that in the trailer.

Of course, here's the kicker......

Will the Russians in the anime refer to the war as "The Great Patriotic War"? Or will the animators get sloppy, and call it merely World War II?

And, if they are showing them as part of the komsomol, will we get to see them become brainwashed under Stalin's personality cult? Stalin and Beria cameos, or at least massive portraits of them shown while they are under komsomol, would make things interesting...

*shrug*

I'll still watch it, but at the same time...I'm keeping my expectations lowered.

A bit of necroposting now that the anime has hit the big screen.

Russians in the anime refer to the war as the GPW. But the guys who made English subs did a sloppy job indeed. Sad

I only noticed one Stalin's portrait, and it was small and was on the screen for about 2 seconds. Smile

See, this is why I kind of like necroposts...I hadn't heard about this project before. The trailer they show on the official website is very cool. I'd love to see this on the big screen.
