Eh, some yaoi fans like slash, some don't. I happen to be one that has no desire to read about non-gay couples being gay. I like yaoi manga fandoms. (btw there is 'yaoi' for guys; it's called gay manga. Yaoi and gay manga have nothing in common except both are about two guys, and even that's debatable when it comes to yaoi. I don't know that any gay manga has ever been licensed.)

Re: cosplay weddings. My own wedding was a solemn affair since we had it in a church that didn't allow anything else. It was, as has been said before, a ceremony cementing the relationship between my husband and me, and also between us and the congregation with them vowing to support our marriage. It was the only wedding my mom got to plan, and it meant the world to her to share the planning with me. So I compromised, as did my husband. Someone willing to do that, I think, understands what's important in making a marriage work. It's never all about "me".

The wedding I had the most fun at though was my brother's. He and his wife were in their 30s when they married, and while they were deadly serious about their vows, they held the wedding on Halloween and invited all the guests to dress up for the reception. Some did, some didn't. Everyone, however, had fun. I liked that they respected the traditions of the ceremony, but made the celebration their own.

But what really gets me are the straight guys who say they hate yaoi because of the fangirls but really it's because they hate the genre itself, not for moral reasons, but because it doesn't appeal to them. They think it's okay for them to watch or read about two hot chicks getting it on, but no should want or be allowed to watch or read about two gay guys making out.
Thanks for pointing this out. This particular double standard really drives me up the wall. I don't think I've ever seen it explicitly stated in here, but in other forums I've read sentiments to the effect of "Yaoi is gross, of course; but if it were 2 chicks making out..." *grits teeth* I mean, girl-on-girl material does not appeal to me personally but I don't think it's "gross" by it's very nature, nor do I begrudge its fans for liking it. *rants about homophobia, double standards about female sexuality, blah blah blah, I'll spare you*

I think this best summarizes my feelings about slash (which I'm taking to mean the pairing of 2 boys in a non-BL series) as well. It should be said, however, that I only "discovered" yaoi maybe 4 years ago, right before the manga licensing onslaught was in full swing, so if I wanted to get my fix I didn't have to read "slash" pairings to get it, as there was now actual, intentional yaoi available (I too prefer manga to anime in this respect). Before that, it might've been a different story, I don't know. I guess what it comes down to, for me, is that while I generally don't seek it out, it doesn't bother me that it exists. I don't find it too hard to just ignore what doesn't interest me (that same sentiment also applies to moe, harem series, whatever).

Re: Yaoi paddles: I didn't know that some people actually hit strangers with those paddles and expected them to kiss(!). That is obnoxious, and it has nothing to do with the yaoi-related aspect of it. It seems to be more about not respecting someone else's personal space, which is uncool whatever the context. I can offer no fellow fangirl-defense for that. However, I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's the loud, obnoxious fans that, by their very nature, generally get noticed. That's true of most fandoms. It's not necessarily representative of all or most fans.

My two cents:

About cosplay weddings - I think they're cool. But yeah, you should take your guests' feelings into consideration.

Kids and anime - I think it's good to get your kids involved in what you like but don't force it on them.

Yaoi - I like yaoi myself but I can understand people being upset with the rapid fangirls. However, I don't like it when people blame the lack of yuri on them. The main reasons for the smaller amount of yuri:
1) There isn't a lot of it to begin with.
2) The fan base isn't as vocal.
3) America has it's own girl/girl porn movies and as for romance/ story, most people assume guys just want sex in their porn.

In other words, there is no great wall of yaoi fangirls holding back a torrential flood of yuri.

But why isn't there as much yuri as yaoi? I find that to be grossly unfair. Yaoi and yuri are both two sides of the same coin.
Also, why isn't the yuri fanbase near as vocal? This gross, unjust discrepancy needs to change....change we can believe in.*

*Not an endorsement for Barack Obama.
