But wasn't that the entire point of HIRING CLAMP to do the character designs on Code Geass? If they hadn't wanted it to look Clamp-ish, they'd have hired somone else. I assume they hired Yun Kouga to do character designs on Gundam 00 because they wanted the Loveless/Earthian look. It's why they hire certain artists to draw various games--because it delivers the style the company is going for-I assume a style that will attract fans of that genre.
This is the "Don't ask/Don't tell" I was talking about. There are people out there who refuse to accept a character is at least bi unless it's declared openly in the manga/anime, but we don't see that in real life. People suspect, but there are lots of reasons to keep quiet about one's sexual orientation. Rock Hudson was a good example. Look at John Lennon & other entertainers in the day keeping marriages secret because they were afraid the fans would be upset the person wasn't "available".(Like that fan would likely ever have a chance.) My daughter has incredible gaydar. She's informed a couple friends they were gay before they realized it themselves. There are clues & things that suggest a character in a manga or anime are bi or gay. It doesn't need to be spelled out. Really the side that insists all characters are hetero until declared otherwise is just as extreme. No, not every character in anime or manga is gay just as not everyone in the world is not gay, but Ikkaku & Yumichika pretty much scream they're awful damned close if they aren't a couple as do other couples. There is room to speculate what sort of humiliation Vegeta suffered under Frieza even though Vegeta is not homosexual because Frieza & Zarbon do seem to maybe swing that way & even if they weren't, it would be very, very humiliating for someone like Vegeta & Frieza did seem to be into that. For the extreme fans, they seem to be young or have issues so, yeah, look at the gals during Beatlemania who screamed non-stop at concerts to the point the band gave up touring. For me & many older fans, we may have our suspicions & our romantic hopefuls, but most of the mature fans don't try to ram GaiXRock down non-yaoi fans' throats. If you don't want to read their fan-fic, don't. No one's forcing you to go there (unless it's a bad friend). Realistically, what's the point in declaring the sexual orientation of a character? Say this character is gay & never refer to it again? Why? Dr Umeda being gay had a point in Hana Kimi. A male character having a crush on another maybe has a point, but if it doesn't, why waste space declaring it? It's mostly useful in humor or romance stories. Does it matter if an action hero is gay? But this also totally & completely ignores a very LARGE segment of yaoi devoted to Clamp's beloved "The One Meant for Me" The characters aren't gay, they just happen to love one another regardless of gender & are willing to defy the norms of society to be together. Many yaoi characters have had girlfriends in the past. Realistically going on the idea of "old souls", lovers in more than one lifetime, there are going to have to be lifetimes when both parties wind up the same gender. We see a couple shojo stories toy with this--the character was a female in the past & the demon waiting for this character is still attracted to the person even though she is now a he. People aren't as traditional as they used to be. You don't have to hold your wedding to please your parents. Your friends are probably into the same stuff you are so they just might be cosplaying along with you. I seem to recall Robert Englund had Freddy Kruger atop his cake for a marriage or a re-marriage a few years back. I've seen Klingon weddings promoted in the Star Trek community. I used Josette's Theme as my down the aisle music instead of the traditional one & at one of the Shadowcons I attended a couple wed in full costume as I believe it was the 1795 Barnabas Collins & Josette, inviting all the con. The Sci-Fi club I belonged to in the late 70's saw our Han Solo, while filming their own version of the movie, in the garbage section where Leia says "Get this walking carpet out of my way" & Han says "No reward is worth this" drop to his knee "except for you, Princess". They ran 2 invites-one set the regular way & one set as Princess Leia announcing her marriage to Han Solo. I know printing invites & taking those official pictures usually isn't cheap. |

| The one thing that's always boggled me personally about the whole slash thing, whether it's yaoi or anything else (though it seems to be yaoi more often than not), is the idea that fictional characters have to have any sexuality in the first place. It's obviously one thing if you're talking about a couple whose relationship is an essential part of the story, or about side characters who are blatantly hinted at being involved with one another, but does Joe Everyman the Shounen Sidekick really need to have any sort of sexual identity either way, much less a full-fledged attraction to someone? When you step back, most fictional characters fill a certain pre-defined trope, and many of those tropes don't have a sexual role to fulfill. It's the same response I had to J.K. Rowling's "shocking" announcement after the fact that Dumbledore was gay...it's never remotely hinted at during the series, and it adds next to nothing to his character, so why does he have to be gay/straight/whatever at all? I'd rather the rabid horny teenage fangirls stick to the characters that are actually meant to be male couples, rather than playing roulette with every nondescript Y-chromosomed character in a series, thank you very much.
Besides all of that, as a red-blooded heterosexual male, watching two girly-looking guys get all touchy-feely is just about the last thing I want in my entertainment. |

| My first post in years! I lost my old account. Anyways, about the whole yaoi thing. I'm a yaoi fan (not fangirl despite being a girl). I have no problem with the whole genre or some of the fans. I don't even mind some speculation about some characters. Hell, I found about the genre by looking up a certain anime (I swear Gundam Wing still must be the mecca of yaoi. It still has the most fics on fanfiction.net). However, when I'm assaulted by one of those damn paddles while crossplaying and being yelled at to kiss another con goer, I get annoyed and pissed at the fan. I don't understand why yaoi fangirls get that way. I've seen the same with yuri fans as well. They're just not all over the place in the form of 13 year old girls who seem to be into it because mommy and daddy wouldn't allow it and don't know. I respect the few that actually enjoy the romance, art, etc. The most annoying part is the guy who's in the dealer's room who shouts "Get your red hot yaoi here!" right in your ear. With weddings, I feel they're a waste in some way. Spending tens of thousands of dollars for a ceremony just to show a bunch of people how much you love each other. I do think you should have the most input on the day, but in the same way you have to think about the guests. They aren't using their money to come see you (whoever is paying for the wedding handles that usually), but they do have to take off work or school or other important things in their lives. So making them comfortable would be the curious thing to do. Still, theme it the way you want, but make sure your guests are taken care of. |

This brings the conversation back to my original complaint, which was the possibility that popularity of yaoi/BL/what have you has contributed to the rise of the shoujo style character designs in other genres. I have no doubt that Sunrise used CLAMP because the production team wanted the characters to look CLAMP-ish. All those Pizza Hut logos were probably intentional, too. The point is moot however because the focus of my post wasn't Sunrise's business practices, but rather my own personal preferences. Latching onto this particular artistic style may sell additional magazines and DVDs, but I reserve the right to not to like it. |

| I've thought a lot about children being brought up with their parents beliefs essentially being "forced" upon them. I've thought deeper into it, and I think that even if you don't push them to become A+ students, Christians or otaku, you are still the major influence they have in those beginning years.
I think that bringing kids into your hobbies are cool, but allow them to get their own geek on. |

It's not a matter of hating/liking who's gay or not, it's a matter of accuracy. Am I to believe that a whole fandom dressing up as Naruto and Sasuke and making out at cons are more right in both characters being gay than Masashi Kishimoto is, who created the work and ironed out the nuances and quirks of the characters? Is Square trying to cover up the fact that Riku and Sora love each other?
Which leads into......
And you just destroyed your arguement by your words above. Seeing that I was forced to read your assine theories in order to come up with a response, you in a sense have nullified your argument that "if I don't like it, don't read it."
Society at large disagrees with you. If it walks like a duck.....
What's "traditional" about two fat girls dressed up in clothing they aren't meant to squeeze into? Or RPing two (or more) characters who clearly don't have any gay undertones in the first place? |

Hehe. You forget while kids were kids. Come on, don't you remember watching a TV show quite often as a child? >.> I know you have... I think mine was the Little Mermaid series. I used to watch that and the Jungle Book back to back. Quite Interesting. I think I had to have been 6....? I thought it was normal. *shrugs.* |

| My two cents:
About cosplay weddings - I think they're cool. But yeah, you should take your guests' feelings into consideration. Kids and anime - I think it's good to get your kids involved in what you like but don't force it on them. Yaoi - I like yaoi myself but I can understand people being upset with the rapid fangirls. However, I don't like it when people blame the lack of yuri on them. The main reasons for the smaller amount of yuri: 1) There isn't a lot of it to begin with. 2) The fan base isn't as vocal. 3) America has it's own girl/girl porn movies and as for romance/ story, most people assume guys just want sex in their porn. In other words, there is no great wall of yaoi fangirls holding back a torrential flood of yuri. But what really gets me are the straight guys who say they hate yaoi because of the fangirls but really it's because they hate the genre itself, not for moral reasons, but because it doesn't appeal to them. They think it's okay for them to watch or read about two hot chicks getting it on, but no should want or be allowed to watch or read about two gay guys making out. |

| For me, I have no problem with yaoi. I don't watch it or read it, but if others do, the that's fine. Where I have problems are the times when fangirls try to force a non-existent relationship and make everyone around them aware of it. For instance, someone actually yelled at a club screening of Gungrave that Harry and Brandon were lovers. Yes, because nothing says love like wanting to kill someone. | ||||||||||||

As long as you don't yell it for all to hear and distract from the show, then you can wish all you want. |

| I think what some of us find annoying about the extreme yaoi fans is their tendency to push discussions away from the original topic. I remember a discussion about who Naruto's closest friends were (we agreed on Sasuke, Sakura, Gaara, and Shikamaru). Suddenly some people start talking about which one Naruto would kiss first (ignoring the accidental kiss early in the series). What did that have to do with anything? We're talking about friendship, if you're that obsessed with something like that, make your own topic.
So please, if you want to discuss stuff like that, please do, but on topics that actually pertain to such things or create your own topics. Also, please try to make some logic behind the claims (this applies to ships of any orientaiton. Sasuke x Hinata seems to have some popularity, despite the fact the two have never even looked at each other or acknowledged each other's existence......so even Naruto x Sasuke would make more sense here). Also, the yaoi fans often are obsessed with shonen guys. Yet virtually all shonens focus on the strength of friendship rather than the strength of love (which makes sense, IMHO. Friendship is almost always seen as a positive factor in fiction, yet love is divided between something postive and/or negative in fiction. Not to be a pessimist, but that's how it is). So ultimately, I can't help but wonder why they don't obsess over series where love is a more important factor. |

Haha. This reminded me of a MAD magazine parody of Hook. Peter Pan explains to his children that he left Neverland so that he could get old to be able to marry Wendy. Leaving Neverland would also mean that he would eventually die. Therefore the moral of the story to all kids is Love = Death. This Yaoi talk made me remember "Sid Warrious" and his funny answerfan account about Gay Axel. Last edited by rti9 on Mon Sep 08, 2008 12:17 am; edited 1 time in total |

| Ok first off I'm not going to do a lot of editing to this post since that will take too long so it wont be perfect.
First I think that the price of anime should be the price for average rentals or the average buying price in America or sources like with a $7.00 movie and you put as many episodes onto the same thing the movie was on and rent/sell it for the average price. I don't care if movies don't normally last that long-some can and they still go for the same price in the movie rental place, right? That being said I also like the crunchyroll way of thinking where you could watch as much anime online for free but you have to sit through advertisments. Also their idea of downloading seem like it would work out well plus their idea of a subscription for higher quality without advertisments. Right now unfortunetaly as long as companies don't remove the episodes from the internet I think they are worth NOTHING or at MOST less than it would cost the companies to remove them. I'd also like to address the girls that want to know if straight guys would look at yaoi, I'm telling you to give up. 0. I'm a straight guy. 1. Any straight guy who would like reading yaoi would most likely be a romantic person... which is already so rare. 2. If they were a romantic person they would probably like normal girl/guy romance more in the first place. 3. I and by extension some guys actually do sort of like romance but it's probably like 1% of interest compared to stuff like action. So the interest in yaoi is already low... I mean I care about it about as much as knowing why the sky is blue, but all I have to do to learn that is search it up online well watching a yaoi series would take 26 episodes of 24 minutes so it's a lot of investment over so little interest. 4. It would have to have no explicit content. 5. I don't think any guy would EVER buy yaoi in public if they were straight... they would have to read it online where no one could see them... and then they'd probably delete it from their history lol. 6. Lastly... since mostly girls are doing yaoi a guy is probably not going to get it, women like yuri because it's 2 girls that understand each other but a straight guy will not understand a girls representation of a homo story, it just won't appeal to them unless they are gay and girly... I won't even PRETEND to know-but a homo relationship of guys that don't act girly is probably just like them hanging out like buddies except for the nightlife... So as you can see there probably next to no chance of it happening. But with http://en.wikipedia.org/ What I want to know is if guys read/watch the stuff will girls be more likely to go out with them? |
