Way too harsh with the Red Spectacles. Sure it isn't as good as Talking Head, and it does go a bit far with the Godard-worship, but there is a rhyme and reason to its absurdity. And the direction of the climax was quite impressive.

Directing isn't as simple as we might make it out to be, especially when you think you might be able to win the academy award for best director.

Interesting article. Initially I thought you'd also mention Takahata's documentaries.

Though they are not Japanese it is worth mentioning some good examples where directing both genres actually produces good quality results.

Have you seen the taiwanese animated movie Grandma and her Ghost? That movie had a huge limitation with budget and time schedule but managed to be quite good

excapt film and animation, they also participated in theater and television direction. I've only seen the movie Bear Hug and found it as one of the best and most touching Asian movies.

Another good example is the British animator Phil Mulloy. Both his animation and his films have won numerous awards and good comments, though they belong rather to the art house type. I haven't seen any of his live action films though to judge for certain. But his 1978 film In the Forest was labelled as a British version of The Travelling Players and the other films (Give us this day, The Return) have also positive comments.

I can't remember any other examples except in the art house circuit or where the works were much more well known than they are today (eg Walerian Borowzcyk, Jan Svankmajer, Karel Zeman, Ladislav Starewitz, Vasilis Mazomenos etc. ). And cases when live-action and animation are mixed. Eg Who Framed Roger Rabbit or some of the works of Ralph Bakshi and Yoram Gross

Where's Katsuhiro Otomo? He directed Mushishi and World Apartment Horror. I haven't seen either, but World Apartment looks very low budget.

A quick correction - the Japanese Region 2 DVD of Shiki-Jitsu does have English subtitles.

Is there any point to trying to find more of the Kerberos saga if I've seen Jin Roh? Can I assume most of it is "garbage" like TRS allegedly is?

Bounce Kogals is a much better movie on the same subject than Love & Pop.

Avalon is a treat and should be seen by all tech fans and gamers.

I only read the part about Shiki-Jitsu, as it's the only one I've seen. I completely disagree about it falling apart and not having a point. It's pretty much the same as Evangelion in terms of its ending:

spoiler[The protagonist completely abandons reality and even herself when she pretends to be her own sister (thinks she actually is her sister?), but must confront reality at the end in the conversation with her mother.]

Shiki-Jitsu had the same message as Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the ending largely plays out similarly to the last couple of episodes. The film also has great dialogue, cinematography, and atmosphere. It also has some great symbolism and indirect storytelling methods that, unlike NGE, are hard to discuss and analyze with people because hardly anyone who speaks English has seen the film. For example, spoiler[the woman offers to have sexual intercourse with the director, but then changes her mind, saying that if she did she'd be no different from her sister. Shortly after that scene, when the director searches for her and finds her the next day, she insists that she is her sister. Is it implied that they had sexual intercourse? It would certainly fit in with Anno's indirect method of presenting stories.]

Love & Pop ... a movie I have seen more than enough the past two years for my graduation thesis...
