Oh man, this comic brings back memories. At AnimeNEXT 2006, I was really looking forward to meeting BECK creator Harold Sakuishi in person. I got in line at the signing area really early with a friend of mine, expecting a huge lineup to have built up already, but my friend and I were unnervingly close to the front. As we played Ouendan to pass the time, the line behind us didn't exactly swell with eager con-goers either. When the signing session officially started, we were through the line in what must have been about 5 minutes, and while we were happy, we were absolutely dumbfounded that more fans wouldn't take advantage of such a rare chance to meet the creator of a popular manga in person.
The kicker was when we came back later, and saw a HUGE line wrapped around the side of the main events hall, going towards the signing area. We thought perhaps Sakuishi-sensei had finally gotten his due, but it turned out that the personality in question was Vic Mignogna. Vic-freaking-Mignogna. I realize he has his own fan brigades and all, but does the voice actor for the English dub of pre-existing properties really warrant that much more attention in comparison to the ones who created them in the first place? |

| There's a loit of truth in that. Though it always depends. I remember waiting in a heck of a long line to Meet Yutaka Izubuchi and later Noboru Ishigoro at AX. Though alternatively I've gotten Hiroyuki Yamaga's signature numerous times. Though it helps that he'll gladly sign after panels and such. The Gainax signing at Fanime this year was packed.
Though I have heard it that american VA's get more recognition, but then that's easily because one need not be a major fan to know of them and there's no language barrier. They're essentially way more mainstream. That's not to say that there's short supply of people like me and others who now more about their favorite shows than Steve Blum dubbing the lead. No shortage of people sneaking over to get Sadamoto's autograph when he wasn't supposed to sign, and so forth. In the end, it all depends. Naturally one hardcore Shinobuden fans or those that collect autographs bother lining up for Ryoichi Koga at Fanime a few years back. |

Even though Beck is a great series, I'd probably go with Vic as well, just because FMA is my second favorite anime of all time. Besides, is it really that surprising? FMA was a pretty strong hit in the States, whereas Beck is fairly obscure. Heck, on two seperate anime forums, I've had people freak out when I mentioned I liked Beck just because they had never encountered another fan of it before. So obviously a large portion of the anime fandom never read/saw Beck, so why would they go see the creator? They'll go see the actor since at least he was in a series they've seen. I mean, why would they get the autograph of a person whose work they've never read/seen? Seems a little odd, to say the least. Now get someone in whose work is pretty popular in the States: Watanabe (Bebop, Champloo), Anno (Evangelion), Toriyama (Dragonball), Kishimoto (Naruto), Kubo (Bleach), etc., then yes, they're going to be packed because people HAVE seen their series. It's not there's this secret "let's ignore the creators" bias going on. People are just going to the guys associated with stuff they've seen. It's common sense, really. |

| *looks at comments about American Voice Actors*
*remembers his vow to not start dub/sub fights* *reminds himself that even though he is a incidental voice actor, he is still a 22+ year otaku who likes dubs and is probably the strangest version of otaku out there* Words....can't...explain the jumbled mess in my head right now... |

Noobs who have been otaku since 1985, work in the industry that releases this swag in the US, and STILL have connections in Japan? I don't think so, kid. Not all dub fans are "noobs", thank ya very much. |

Yeah, it's worked well for me too. It seems to be a good conversation starter. Although, I just like talking to them even without something to start it off. Also, they really like getting presents, but don't we all? |

Plus there's the fact that at the time of AnimeNext 2006, only 4 volumes of the BECK manga had been released here (the fourth just the week before) and the anime was 13 months away from being released here. At the same time, FMA had its 51st episode shown on Adult Swim just 3 months before and had 9 DVDs out. So no, no surprise at all. Yes, trolling and insulting isn't going to be tolerated. If you're not going to add to the discussion without assuming people with tastes that differ from yours are somehow inferior, then I'm afraid the discussions that take place here aren't for you. |

| You know, there is an advantage for having small amount of fans for Japanese creators than having huge number of fans for VA.
Autograph line is shorter. Thus better chance of getting autograph. In Japan, it's practically impossible to get creators' autographs due to their ultra busy schedule and privacy issues. When I was at the Anime Expo 2008, I've met few Japanese fans who flew all the way to get their favorite artists' autograph. I was so happy that I was able to get art autograph from Masahiro Ando.
