I find it very interesting that in a thread responding to an albeit inaccurate portrayal of anime fandom, most people are adopting a denialist position rather than trying to face the issues head-on. You all sound so like the members of a certain lolicon forum, who always erupt in a chorus of indignation the moment anyone dares to accuse them of pedophilia.
Before you dismiss us as Lolicon defenders, read the article. There are many things wrong with it.We were pointing out the inaccuracies.Unless you are saying what Brian said was on the mark. Laughing

I don't think we "all" deny that that such things exist in anime, but to say that it is the scourge of American youth, turning them into misogynistic predators is a bit OTT, don't you think? Also to point to Legion Of The Overfiend as a common example of what most anime is, is catamount to saying Deep Throat is a common example to what most movies are.

Heh, look at the article rating. 1.5/10. In other words, EPIC FAIL.

As for Gurren Lagann, PLEASE. It's innuendo only, and it does air at 11:00 for a reason. Rolling Eyes LOST, Heroes, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, etc. get away with MUCH more, and they're on from 8-10. Oh yeah, and they have WAY more viewers than Gurren Lagann does, so why not focus on series that are watched by more people and leave us alone? (not actually encouraging that, of course. You mess with LOST, you deal with ME!).

"he’s not just reading a comic book"

Yes, because there are definitely not any American comic books with any sexual innuendo or actual nudity, graphic violence, profanity, and/or drug usage for that matter.................*cough*

"a lot of it is meant for children."

Well, thanks. In Brian's world, anime is either sexual or childish. Gee, where have we heard this stereotype before?

"Wonder Woman (who was created as a dominatrix bondage fantasy.)"

..........................yeah. Brian, keep your own perverted fantasies to yourself. Wonder Woman has been viewed as a significant factor in increasing woman's roles in comic books, quit trying to turn it into something else entirely.

At least they showed that virtually all lolicon fans are opposed to real child pornography. Though pointing out that tons of anime fans are NOT loli-fans would have been nice.

Also, why are they so worried? If all otaku males are not interested in real women like their "facts" claim, then we won't be around for very long. Laughing

I think what he doesn't realize is that theres a lot of ligament content out there. Not all of it is about sex. I like MSNBC because there relatively away from mainstream media but I'm offended by this. Its articles like this that spew out hate against us.

That article show one of Takashi Murakami's figures. Just think what they would write about what his other two figures, what made him a few million in auction recently, and detailling some rather randon secretions of certain body fluids. Wink

What the heck is ligament content? Anime about anatomy? Anatomy no Gure?

Legitimate?

Anyway, I'm not offended by this article. Considering all the other issues facing America right now, and the presence of inaccurate reporting that could actually hurt this country-- I'm really not that upset about some guy bashing on lolicon.

All the nerd rage in the world will just serve to make others laugh at the anime community even more.

Gads this article was disaster in the making. Very poor reporting in my opinion. On the other hand its not terribly surprising to me to see the whole anime fan equals pervert or sex fiend. I still get wierd looks once in a while when I buy anime or manga. One older man even asked me if girls like me were really into sex shows like that. Shocked Oh well, so much for a more accepting world. Confused

i don't think the article is meant to target or comment on anime/manga culture in general

it's focusing on a very specific subset...the same subset wonderfully portrayed in genshiken =)

That article has to be the most unintentionally hilarious piece of bilge I've read all week. And since we are in the midst of Presidential election hysteria here in the U.S.A. that is saying a lot.

Well of course, most of the reports are either trying to dig up dirt on Sarah Palin or trying to catch Kanye West in another tiff due to his short temper.

I found this article rather offensive myself, and inaccurate. For one thing, anime isn't main stream, its a niche. Secondly, not all anime fans watch adult anime, thirdly, he makes it sound like anime will be the fall of the western civiliaztion! And lastly, the people who buy "anime sex toys" are boys who can't talk to real girls. Like it said in the last part of the article, "they're better than real women, they don't talk back."
Because of this article, people who aren't into anime, are going to think people who are into anime are complete and total perverts. I guess when I make new friends in college, I'm gonna have to keep it secret that I like anime, until they know me well enough to know that I am not a pervert. I don't even watch hentai. Thanks alot MSNBC!

LOL LMAO ROFL Laughing

I'm pretty sure that the Sci-Fi channel is owned by NBC or part of their family of networks.

I don't like Gurren at all but it just seems strange to me that they would want to trash their own show like that?

Yes. It doesn't always have to do with a living, breathing partner, though.

I don't see this guy attacking, comdeming or even really insulting anyone here. He even says that many wear the "badge" with honor, and you know what, some actually do ('cause "REAL WOMEN MAKE THEM SICK"). Remember, he mentions "adult realm of otaku culture". I've seen the nitty-gritty side of this sub-culture, so I feel I know exactly what point(s) he was trying to make. However, like history class in junior high, he's not really showing you the whole picture and what he does show is done in a very simplified way.
I think there are a lot of things that tie-in these fetishes that he and yourself can find and it's not just because some people watch a cartoon, but who really has the time or courage to do the research themselves?

Sometimes, I'm not really sure how many of you guys think about how diverse the anime "community" really is.

This is just as bad as FOX News' Mass Effect hysteria, or worse. How insulting.

This article has been brought to you by a wormhole that opened up in 1997 and sucked the article into 2008.

Facepalming. So hard.
