| Eh, I say let the guy have his vices... it's like me with fast food: I quit eating it tomorrow and just eat tofu? I'll still be dead in a hundred years.
Satoshi Kon also smokes like a chimney. I know a lot of people here seem to know Kon, but I saw him at Fantasia after the premiere of Millenium Actress and my mental image of the guy will always be of him doing sketches of Mima from Perfect Blue with a cigarette hanging from his mouth burned 2/3rds of the way down, but with the burnt portion of the cigarette still drooping from the filter somehow. And Kon wouldn't seem as cool in my mental image of him if the cigarette was gone. |

| I believe Yoshiaki Kawajira smokes too. Out of all things, I saw him smoke during an interview for Ninja Scroll the movie. I just hope the tobacco doesn't make him unable to direct any more great anime, but maybe it helps him stay focused, I don't know... |

| I'm surprised the Japanese care about smoking at all. And Takahata's the one who matters, since he's younger than Miyazaki anyway. Or maybe I just feel more sorry for him cus he looks more like a salaryman and not a celebrity. | ||||

Still, it's not really good to always be smoking on camera, and trying to be a good example for the kids as well. Though it's an addiction, it's still unhealthy, and kids should be brought up knowing so. And for those celebrities we care about, we'd also want them to stop smoking so they don't dig an early grave. =/ |

| I don't care if people are worried about the children, just as long as they don't try to slap smoking in movies with an R-rating like certain fascist organizations seem to want right now. | ||||

Yeah, I don't like ideologues getting in the way of reason. |

Still, aren't they labeling those type of movies with stuff like Contains Drug/Smoking Reference? It'd be kinda funny if movies and such had surgons general warnings displayed on them prior to the start (kinda like a FBI warning). =P |

Yeah, like this one. I agree. Smoking is such a minor vice. It doesn't warrent an R rating. If fans want to ask celebrities to stop smoking, that is one thing, but I think it's going a bit to far to start telling people that they can't watch a movie becase of it. As for the Japanese jumping on the anti-smoking bandwagon, I don't find it hard to believe. It's just another in a long list of cultural exports from the US to Japan. |

| With the amount of work Miyazaki puts in, it's no wonder why he need to smoke. Stress can take a toll on a person if he/she can't find a way to relax. | ||||

He was in a comedy duo with another guy(sorry, don't know his name) called 'Two Beats', which is where he gets the name 'Beat' Takeshi. I still need to see Getting Any? |

| Yeah I'm against the R rating for movies with smoking in them and I'm against banning smoking (california does this) in public and elsewhere except in the case of property rights. Of course I don't encourage smoking I discourage it and would encourage miyazaki to quit for his health and to promote a better way to children but if he doesn't want to its his health and such not mine and I really don't see much wrong with it except the health issue | ||||
