Just because I think this can't be emphasized enough: The King of Fighters XII looks amazing. A truly stunning amount of detail, all beautifully animated with an eye for style. Seriously, go click that link and watch the video on their site, it's fantastic. For the more obsessive, there are plenty of delightfully blurry cellphone camera shot videos from its playable debut at AOU! It'll also be back at TGS in a few weeks, along with three more characters (there were 11 at AOU) and King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match.
It's pretty admirable to see them putting so much effort into a 2D game in this day and age.
Also, it's funny to see KOF bulking everyone up (especially BIG HUGE Ralf), while Castlevania Judgment is doing the opposite, what with girlboy Eric Lecarde. I remember seeing the original Rage of the Dragons character art, and Mario Vargas from Evoga (Mexico) describing how the characters looked "big, strong and mean", but made "skinny" for Japan. Hmm....

Don't forget Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations is (finally!) due out on the third of October! The fourth release in the series, according to Nintendo's website.
Nintendo hates Europe. |

Nice write up this round.
Yeah, that 'Princess Debut' is...something. Have you ever seen someone so "crack" happy in your life? Hell, I'm almost compelled to buy it because it's so damn "girlish". GAAAAH!! It makes me scream. I wonder who did the designs. Resembles the designs from that TV show 'Futago Hime'.
Seems 'Capcom' is packing in the characters in that game. As for the 'Castlevania' game, (sheesh) what were they thinking? Well, they did say they needed to make a game for the 'Wii' but how to handle the approach. Didn't expect a fighter. Oh well, at least there's 'Order of Ecclesia'. Seems like the only place 'Takeshi Obata's designs are any good because these SUCK!!! Simon looks like he going bike riding about now.
MM9, looks good. Of course it's going to be received with mix feelings. I'm curious to see how this plays out. As for girls being afraid of hornets, see and folks thought I was crazy for saying there was no logic in 'MM' games. I'm going to have to check that out for myself.
Didn't know that 'Atlus' almost published a 'Metal Jack' game here. Oh well, now that brings back memories

"JACK ON!"
One of the most unintentionally hilarious cartoon catch phrases ever!
And while Mega Man 4 thru 8 tended to get weaker in terms of gameplay and storyline, I thought 4 wasn't half bad. Wily kidnapping Cossack's daughter and forcing Dr. Cossack to fight Mega Man still showed how much of a dangerous threat Wily still was back then before he became a complete joke who resorted to framing characters and trying to make himself look like a good guy! |

Oh, god, yes.
Apollo Justice was prettier and in a few ways better written than the Phoenix games, but it eventually failed by serving up a dull conclusion. |

You mean how she gained some 80s SD chubbiness? I was more concerned with the fact that her hair is neon purple and she looks silly. I loved her around '96/'97 mostly. |

Seriously. Keiji Inafune even admits that he drew inspiration from Astro Boy (it was his favorite anime for a while too).
A shame I'll never get to play MM9. And yes, I mean never. Won't be happening. I'm held back by an obvious problem: I can't download it. I mean, I'm probably the biggest Megaman fan in south Cali. I need to play this!
And on the subject of Sonic: seriously I wish Sega would kill off the little blue rodent. I'm getting seriously tired of hearing about a new game for him. They should focus on the Shining series more or something. Don't they know what crowd Sonic caters to these days?
In regards to Metal Jack, sad to say I never heard of either the anime or the game. But I'm not so sure the game may have done well even if it had been released. |

| Well my last bit of will power that has kept me from wanting to import TATSUNOKO VS. CAPCOM for the Wii is now gone. The Genie from Bob in the Bottle has me sold on this game even more then I was. *Readies wallet for pain* |

to me,Sonic has been dead to me since Shadow the Hedgehog, but yeah, most of Sonic's Recent games have been utter shit piles lately (with the exception of the Sonic Rush games and possibly Sonic Chronicles for DS),but I wish Sega would bring back Streets of Rage
or heck, maybe Jaleco should revive the Rushing Beat series
I've been a Megaman fan since the very first Megaman for the NES,my most favorite would have to be megaman 3 because I loved all of the Rush units such as Submarine rush, and the game was much longer because of the Doc bots who imitate some of the Megaman 2 bosses before you go straight to wily's castle |

If you want real Nostalgia there's six 8-bit games, I play them often. Could I return to a series of serial-based story-minimal mega-man games without any 3D? Absolutely, but only if they did their best to make the game mechanics and game appearance as polished as possible. I've enjoyed a great many 2D based games because it's not hard in this day and age to make absolutely lovely artwork and sound/music that works well even if it isn't 3D or uber HD quality.
It's an amazing extreme to interpret Nostalgia as "Let's make the sound absolutely suck, remove all the cool gameplay additions we made, and make the graphics look twenty years old ON PURPOSE!"
| therealssjlink wrote: | | Enjoy your X7 and Sonic Heroes, we'll enjoy our 9 and RUSH. |
Is it too much to say that both have their points and merits? Why can't I have my chocolate with peanut butter now that we have some?
Moreover there was absolutely no reason to return to NES level sound or NES level graphics and Mega Man 2 game mechanics. This is just as big of an issue of a game company or developer loosing focus of what's important as all of the old-school gamers have been complaining about with new games. This is basically a reverse George Lucas.
Instead of focusing on special effects and technical improvements, it's focused on making a carbon copy of a game made decades ago, to a sickening extreme. You can capture the essence of something yet remake it in a form palpitable to most. Look at the new BSG re-imagining. There are a few some points of contention but it took the core issues the show was pressing, its essence and tried to remake it in a more contemporary sense. How would everyone have felt if they just re-used the same cameras, model footage, sound equipment, and special effects from the original BSG but with the new actors and a different story? Because that's about what you're getting here. All the bad parts of the old and very little of the good parts of the new.
It's about as nostalgic as deciding to intentionally hit baseballs through a row of random people's windows at age thirty because you accidentally did it a few times to a neighbor's window as a kid.
| Twilightmaster wrote: | Here and I thought old school gamers would have more appreciation for not steadily going for better graphics, and not much of anything else. To be honest, you sound like an emotionally distraught fan who had wished for a fancy spangled ps3 megaman, and got this instead.
Oh well, while you're protesting a game that probably cost Capcom little to nothing to make in either money or time, I along with numerous others will be enjoying a fun 8-bit game. |
I don't need a fancy spangled PS3 Mega-Man at all. As I've said before it doesn't need to be 3D but it needs to be made to appeal to the best of its style. If Keiji Inafune wants to make another sprite based game with a similar sort of story I'm all for that so long as he tries to do it to the best of his ability.
In fact, I'm almost tempted to say that this decision wasn't made because he felt it was the best decision but rather because he didn't want to try. Sort of like the bored genius who gets F's on exams because he doesn't "care" about school.
You can make a difficult, old-schoolish sprite based Mega-Man without totally ignoring every single advance in not just the entire series (which he made) but gaming in general that happened in the last twenty years. The only reason I can think of to do this was either profit, lazyness, or a combination of both.
Why can't a high quality sprite based MM9 with high quality audio have been made? Hell I'd even be satisfied if they didn't have any voice acting in it so long as it didn't look and sound like something no one else has seen put out by anyone serious in the last eighteen years (MM6 was in 1993/4.) |
