Oh, I should also add that I really don't give a crap about Clannad, and this license doesn't surprise me in the least. Though I do have to question the wisdom of licensing the same sort of series (low sales potential, low crossover/mainstream appeal) that got you into the financial difficulties that resulted in the loss of your business partner and all the assets you acquired with them in the first place.

ADV needs something that will sell outside of the moe otaku fanbase if they actually want to dig themselves out of their hole.

I may be the only one, but I thought ADV's flinging of "Welcome to NHK" towards Crunchyroll was "a middle finger" towards the general mainstream anime fandom. Said title being "a middle finger" towards anime fandom already.

And there are people here and there who believe that ADV's so deep in a hole that they will never be able to get out. No matter what they say about "not going anywhere." "Snickering fat guy" and all.

I would have rather seen something like Dennou Coil in stead, but it's still nice to see ADV picking up such a big property. Given the trend of current series, it was probably hard for them not to wind up with something moe.

EDIT: Tyrenol, it may be that ADV didn't have a say in the matter. Welcome to the NHK was made by GONZO, who's climbed into bed with CR.

Huzzah for that. ADV did a great job with AIR and Kanon. I can't for the life of me understand where this irrational stupidity comes from.

Newsflash to all "purists": The video and original Japanese audio WILL NOT BE CHANGED! The subtitles will be accurate though they might differ a tad from those beloved fansubs of yours.

As for the dub, if you like dubs you'll likely be just fine with it after you get used to voices, whether it's your first time with the show or just first time in English.

And for goodness sake, if you hate a paticular show, that doesn't mean that every single series the company touches is instantly corrupted. Seriously, was Valkyrie that bad to you? Were you forced to watch it at gun point or something? Was Kira Vincent Davis the gunwoman? Rolling Eyes (Also, I liked Valkyrie so back off it. It's a silly fluffy pointless fanservice laden bit of guilty pleasure.)

Try to be rational about this announcement. If ADV has licensed Clannad, it should be seen as a great day for any fan of Key's works. You're going to have chance to buy the series on R1 DVD! Doesn't that make you happy?

Some may be calling my comment an overreaction, but I just don't trust CLANNAD to be in good hands of a company who dubbed UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie. That show all its own was a nightmare, not just cause of their dub, I couldn't care about that, it was just a bad show in general.

Who cares if ADV released Valkyrie? Not only does it have nothing to do with CLANNAD, but that's completely setting aside the fact that ADV has also released the Makoto Shinkai films, Full Metal Panic, Princess Tutu and other well-done, superbly translated and dubbed series. ADV is actually my favorite company in the industry when it comes to dubs, so I have zero fear there, especially after seeing how absolutely fantastic the Kanon dub track was. (Heck yeah, people who sound like PEOPLE!)

I, for one, heartily welcome our new dango overlords.

Agreed, the "uguu" was bad but for the most part the dubs are great from ADV. My only problem with them is Chris Patton. They overuse him and 80% of the time he doesn't fit the characters very well. However he was perfect in FMP.

Anyway, this is about Clannad and I'm glad ADV got it (if true). I thought they did a great job on AIR, I didn't watch Kanon on-demand (except 1 ep) because just a week before they got I finished watching subs of it Anime hyper.

Hmmm... I never got around to finishing Clannad. I guess I'll wait for the ADV release. Thank you for liscensing this show, ADV!

However, I really hope ADV can handle this... with all the problems they're having. This is one title I'd like to finish, thank you. I won't forgive them if they mess up Clannad.

Here's in hopes it's in a season box, though?

Yup, best to submit to our squishy superiors before the mandatory lobotomies.

I'm glad for this news, hopefully the covers will be as lovely as the R2 ones. As for the dub, I just can't wait to see who they cast for Sunohara. LOL

Isn't the fact that ADV is licensing this show possible evidence that Kanon and Air didn't actually do badly? I have no numbers and you have no numbers, but they said they would license Kanon if Air did well, and they did license Kanon. And they are looking into this when they need a big comeback show.

I was hoping for a pre-license for Shikabane Hime (I can dream), but this is good, too, and I will definitely try this out and possibly blind buy it, if only because it has the most adorable ending theme ever made. I mean, ADV is back. Very Happy They're back with a big license! Very Happy This is. . .this is good news, right?

I mean, people are complaining about a dub that doesn't exist for a show that may or may not be licensed and that may or may not sell well. How about, "Yay, more R1 anime!" How about, "Yay, a more varied R1 market!"

I don't get it guys, mainly every anime gets dubbed, and usually always they're always bad. If you don't like dubs and are worried about the voices, just don't listen to it, that's what I've done with ToHeart. Confused

some of us want to enjoy the dubs though. It's not like I hate subtitles, but it's a lot easier to listen to the voices than follow each line of text...

It's just a matter of preference.

And to skyler, yeah, I meant the voices. Anyone who's been here has seen that people feel that the voices pretty much are the embodiment of the characters and granted, I do have the japanese dub to choose from, as I said before, I like it when these licensing companies get it right and I can have an alternative to the original voices.

Well, I really, really want to see Clannad tv so as long as ADV actually release all of it I will be happy. And although don't like to get involved in the whole sub-dub thing, if you are a "purist" for a series you probably should be watching it subbed since you know the original creators of the anime actually were involved in casting the voice actors for the Japanese version. The purist version is the original version. Regardless I will be buying it and putting in a nice art box if they release it.

One of those guys even said that Kanon's dub wasn't bad (so then why is he dreading Clannad's so much? Confused ), so yeah, I'm also baffled by the train of thought there. I'm finding it hard to watch Kanon in japanese simply because I love the dub so much. I like Boone's Nayuki more than her Ayumi in Magikano (if any of you remember how googily I was over her Ayumi performance Very Happy ).

One benefit: the subs I have of Clannad do that annoying kaoroke thing during the in-show songs which is beyond distracting. I don't care about it being in the opener and closer, but when its going on in the middle of the show its just flat out annoying; give me the plain lyrics and nothing else. If this liscense is for real then I can rest assured that I can (eventually) enjoy Clannad without that distraction.

I for one hope this is true for 2 reasons:
1) I love the Clannad series and want it on my shelf (though I must say, I had to turn off the movie half way through because it was seriously hurting my love for the series Mad )
and 2) it will show that ADV is not doomed. Like them or not, I'm sure you can agree that the last thing that the R1 anime industry needs is for another company to go under.

**crosses fingers in hopes that this is true**

Kyo: Newsflash. All companies license crappy shows once in a while. And they didn't really get a chance to handle Air in the first place, since Sojitz kept dicking them around on the rights.

Is that so? They released Air in its entirety months before the Sojitz freeze earlier this year. They put out the first disc only four months after announcing it and gave it a monthly release, pretty nice treatment for a show like Air don't you think? They didn't even treat their real seller of this year that well (hint: it's also a video game-based show). Rolling Eyes

Personally I'm happy they got Clannad but I'll pass if they decide to do singles and not sets, it's just another thinpak to wait for then. Hopefully they've learned something from this year...

Gurren Lagann is Bandai. It was once ADV, but ADV lost the rights.

Clannad is not really my thing(I don't think), so I am indifferent to this news. But wow! I came into this thread expecting to read gushing jubilation, since I know these shows have quite a following, but all I got was a bunch of nerd rage. Jeez.Neutral

Anyway, I am glad ADV is still around and stirring things up. Next announcement: Eva 1.0.

Although I loved their work on Air TV and Kanon, I can't say im all that much excited about them acquiring Clannad. I don't want to pay 25 dollars on each single disc then, all of a sudden, ADV relinquishes rights, and im left without the final effing disc (i.e. Welcome to the NHK, Kanon).

I think the solution to the problem would either be releasing the series in two parts (funimation has started doing this with many of their new series, as well as their re-releases through their "veridian" line), or shorten the gap between single releases.
