Are you not concerned that that report is datelined "Oct/21/2008"?

The print edition of the magazine is dated 10/21, so I imagine that the online edition is just dated the same for convenience. :-)

To address a few of the posters - there are plenty of men who like Yuri, both in the West and in Japan. some actually do see it as porn for their entertainment, some don't. Just the same as the Yaoi/BL world - fans read it for love, for reflections of their own experience, for entertainment, for titillation. it's all good. FWIW, the membership of Yuricon is just under half male and just slightly over half female. We're a very equal-opportunity fan community. :-)

BL and GL *are* used in Japan as English terms. "Boys Love" and "Girls Love" are what publishers call Yaoi and Yuri respectively when they shelve them in bookstores and label them in their advertisements. The Japanese words, "shounenai" and "shoujoai" are more related to the shota and loli fetishes.

The backlash against Yaoi fans is as unfortunate as the original reactions against Yuri fans when I started promoting it 8 years ago. Any group of fandom that behaves immaturely makes a bad impression. The paddles, whether Yaoi or Yuri, sort of encourage this bad behavior - they are things that minors can buy, when they cannot legally buy adult material. As a result you've got sexually stimulated young people walking around with an item that amounts to a sex toy and weapon. Of *course* there's gonna be issues. lol

Many cons have begun banning the paddles as signs and as weapons, so you'll see less and less at cons. Then the fad will die down and the next annoying thing will pop up. :-)

IMHO, both the Yuri and Yaoi fandoms are significantly less immature and more reasonable as both genres have gained in popularity. I think it's excellent - and I look forward to seeing where we are in 5-10 years.

Cheers,

Erica
