Have to say I never liked Watchmen - didn't like it back in the 80's and still don't like it now.
IMO there are any number of comics way better - Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Niel Gaiman's Sandman series (or even his Golden Age Miracleman), Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan, Delano or Jenkin's Hellblazer run, even Vaughn's Ex Machina.

I agree, it's probably the movie hype.

*Damn, why have I no Transmetropolitan on my bookshelf .... *
